Album Review: Young Lords – Rodeo Songs

By Will, August 26th 2008

Meet Young Lords. They are 4 piece out of NYC and they look the part. The band consists of lead singer Blair Van Nort, his brother and guitarist Reed Van Nort, drummer Cory Lasser, and finally guitarist Adam Gerard. They formed 2 years ago in NYC. They have played with The Fratellis and Virgins over the span. They got the cool attitude, dress well and I’m sure most people will agree that they look good. They have been featured in music/lifestyle magazines such as Nylon and Anthem to prove that. You may recognize the name or the song ‘Rodeo Songs’ because they were featured on MTVU. Props to them for doing all of this without a label. Even more impressive!

When I gave their album a few spins the first two bands to come to mind where Kings Of Leon, and The Strokes. I guess I could understand everyone else saying The Stones too because they got a rough bluesy sound that could have come from the 1960′s. I guess KOL comes from the cool rocker attitude, and the Strokes comes from the rough NYC sound that they got. They got a rough sound that would not work in my mind any other way. The production is at the right level for sure. Lead single Rodeo Songs starts the album off right. It has a nice steady beat with lyrics wanting to get home to that baby. They create really steady beats that you really can nod along to. Their main strength has to be their chorus’s. They really craft them well, and you can’t help but notice how catchy they are. “Riverside” presents some great blues guitars and a really cool bass line about half way through to lead right into a jam. “Make To Mistake” is a ball of energy that does not let up at all. This is definetly the sound they are going for and they should be.

The song ‘Pretty Little Mess’ actually caught me off guard because for some reason it reminded me of ‘Hard To Explain’ by the Strokes. One of the highlights off the album was at the end of the album titled ‘Hail Mary.’ Cool guitar riff, vocals of heeey floating in between its really good stuff. Has a really nice feel to it.

The album flows quite well with no filler. They are playing with The Virgins in NYC tomorrow. These guys will be getting big in no time, keep an eye out for them this winter and it 2009. People will be talking about these guys very soon!

Buy the album on October 7th.

Led Zep Working On A New Album?

By Will, August 26th 2008 — with 1 comment

There are reports that Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham as of today are working on new material that could possibly be new Led Zeppelin material. They have considered working on new stuff every since they got back together for the reunion show.

Robert Plant however has not been there for the sessions. Although he did have the following to say “I’ve been working with Jimmy and John Paul and trying out some new material. I don’t know what it will be, but it will be something. At the moment, all I know is I have the great pleasure to go and jam with the two guys and start work on some material. The possibility of doing something is on the cards. I really felt it was on the cards from the moment we walked offstage at the O2 Arena. Lots of politics would need to get ironed out.”

Doesn’t seem like its in any form of development yet but hey, it’s a start!

The Killers Give Us New Album Title

By Will, August 26th 2008

The Killers have announced that they have a new album coming out in November and it will be called ‘Day and Age.’ NME.com had an exclusive interview with Brandon Flowers at Leeds Festival and reports that the songs ‘Goodnight Travel Well’, ‘Joyride’, ‘Neon Tiger’, ‘I Can’t Stay’ and ‘Losing Touch’ will be on the album. The latter being Flowers personal favorite.

Sounds good to me. Hot Fuss is a classic (yes the 2nd half gets better over time) and Sam’s Town clicked for me pretty much instantly. Gotta hope they can keep it up the good trend with ‘Day And Age.’ There may not be another Mr. Brightside but lets hope they can come close.

It is good to hear that my favorite band The Arctic Monkeys are recording some new stuff. They haven’t dissapointed me yet. They look to continue their strong push by deciding to fly the boys from Sheffield to Cali to produce a few tracks with them. The direct quote from nme.com is:

“He said that it had not yet been determined whether the songs would be released as an album or a single, as they were just experimenting at this early stage.

I think it’s going to work out great, Homme told NME.COM. They want to submerge themselves in a place that’s the opposite of where they’re from and what they’re used to.

I think we’re just going to start by doing a couple of tracks. No pressure. The goal is to make something that they dig so much that everyone else can too.”

This sounds pretty badass to me, and if all goes to plan we could have some hard dark arctic monkeys tracks. Hopefully if they all like what they make and enjoy working with each other, Homme can sign on to produce their whole 3rd album. This could really put the Arctic Monkeys in a place where not many other bands have gotten to. 3 amazing albums in a row. Could it possibly get any better than this?

Album Review: Bloc Party – Intimacy

By Will, August 23rd 2008 — with 3 comments

Radiohead have changed the way music will be put out forever. Bands are afraid that their work will be put out months ahead of time, causing people to not purchase it, and put the album down way before it deserves attention. Bloc Party joined Radiohead & The Raconteurs with a new album announcement days before its release. They surprised the world with ‘Intimacy’ their 3rd album to date.

‘Silent Alarm’ was one of the best albums of 2005, and may be one of the 21st century’s best. It was fast paced rock that had its fair share of delicate moments that blended perfectly. Their follow up ‘A Weekend In The City’ was a bit slower, and took things in a different direction. Critics and fans turned their back on the band. They didn’t like new single Flux either, claiming it wasn’t true Bloc Party. However I feel that AWITC was better than people gave it credit for, there is a lot of depth in those songs. You gotta let it sink in. Flux is a good fun dance song, hence the release as a separate single. I would have been more frustrated with them if they released another Silent Alarm.

So here we are with album #3 and no expectations at all. We got a preview of it with ‘Mercury’ and ‘Trojan Horse’ ahead of hand. ‘Mercury’ will be one of the most polarizing tracks of 2008. The song has so many cool things going for it, I don’t see the hate. It really is a cool song. Then Trojan Horse has a kick of distortion that reminds us of the great moments ‘Silent Alarm’ brought us. They get back to their angular rock ways on the stomper ‘Halo’ that is just a pure bolt of energy. Truly a great, great track. Another gem is the song ‘One Month Off’ that is sure to be a fan favorite. The great thing about the album is the meshing of producers of both albums. This allows the band to bring the best of both worlds. Songs like ‘Biko’ and ‘Zepherus‘ use vocals and depth to remind us of the sincere softer songs we loved from AWITC (I Still Remember). They know what they do best and they put it all together to form another great addition to their already astounding catalogue. They add pianos, distortion effects and all other cool things that give them a redefined sound, while still keeping their trademark sound alive and well.

Bloc Party are a force to be reckoned with. People give them shit for AWITC but soon they will come to realize that the album is 10x better than they originally thought. This album is a perfect blend of angular/soft rock that shows why we once chanted “God Bless Bloc Party.” They are progressing with every album and it truly works.

Listen to these songs now:
1. Halo
2. One Month Off
3. Ion Square
4. Mercury

[New] TV On The Radio – ‘Golden Age’

By Will, August 19th 2008

TV On The Radio, the indie rockers who in many minds had the best album of 2007 are back officially! We have all heard about their new album titled ‘Dear Science’. Well they have put a song from the album ‘Golden Age’ available on their website. This song is pretty great as expected. Nice song with a bass line that almost gives the song a dance groove. Some cool sounds in the background that will require some more listens to absorb it all. Vocals are classic TVOTR. I am really enjoying this, it is pretty well done. These guys have a lot to live up to after ‘Return To Cookie Mountain.’ So far so good. Stream the song via their website below:

Vampire Weekend always seem to amaze me. They have not put out one bad song, album, live, cover, WHATEVER. I’ve saw them at Bowery and Central Park this year, and hopefully will catch them whenever they return back home to NYC. They have my spot for #1 album for 2008 pretty much locked up.

They recently went to Australia and covered a Fleetwood Mac song ‘Everywhere’ over at a radiostation. I found this post via the blog Pretty Much Amazing and you can check that out here: (Pretty Much Amazing)

Steam the song thanks to pma below:

Seems like Bloc Party is taking up all the news here! Although we are already getting the new Bloc Party album super quick, they have made yet another song available in advance. Bloc Party have made the track ‘Trojan Horse’ off of new album ‘Intimacy’ entitled available to stream on their myspace. The song seems to come back to the sound they had on Silent Alarm tracks Helicopter and Banquet.

Fans who were disappointed by first single ‘Mercury’ should be more satisfied with this. I only listened to it once so I am not 100% sure where I stand on this, but I do think I enjoyed it more than ‘Mercury’ for sure. Back to some rocking solo’s and fuzzy distortion effects on the guitars. Great opening lyrics with “”You used to take your watch off before we made love, you didnt want to share your time with anyone.” Bloc Party seems to be a band people are hating on recently, hopefully this will get people shouting for them again. “God bless Bloc Party”

Give it a go right here. Preorder the new album at http://www.blocparty.com

I logged into my facebook account to get a notification from the Bloc Party account that was quite a pleasant surprise! The band have announced they have a new album all ready to go digitally on August 21st titled “Intimacy” You can pre-order it right on the band’s website right here.

The physical CD will be released on October 27. If you order the CD you will also benefit from the digital release on August 21st so that should be the way to purchase it for sure! They hinted about “Intimacy” on their first webchat today, and that it will be available to buy instantly. This is just another quick release that shows the change in the music industry that was caused by Radiohead.
The tracklisting for Intimacy:
1. Ares
2. Mercury
3. Halo
4. Biko
5. Trojan Horse
6. Signs
7. One Month Off
8. Zephyrus
9. Better Than Heaven
10. Ion Square
It was produced by Paul Epworth and Jacknife Lee who produced their 1st & 2nd albums respectively. This is a pleasant surprise for me, as Bloc Party are an important band to me. They were one of the first bands along with Arctic Monkeys that I really dove into and become the huge music enthusiast that I am today. Thank god for ‘In Rainbows’ instant online release, this hopefully will cause more bands to follow over time!! Can’t wait to hear what it sounds like, since we all have to idea.

The note I received described the album as:

” Some songs are Bloc Party at their most experimental, while other tracks are classic Bloc Party fitting seamlessly amongst fan favorites ‘Helicopter’, ‘Banquet’, and So Here We Are’”
