The Hold Steady vs. Radiohead?

By Will, August 18th 2008 — with 1 comment

NME.com is reporting that the Hold Steady’s guitarist Tad Kubler had a few negative things to say about Radiohead. NME said that he was against the pay what you want method for In Rainbows, as well as their new direction in music over the last few years. Here is the direct quote:

“I think they’ve lost the plot,” he said. “What are they doing? Where are they going? What’s happening? I don’t get it any more. They lost me.

“I still appreciate what they’re doing, or what they’re trying to do. But I think they’re trying too hard not to be Radiohead. That seems a little ridiculous to me.”

“I like them as a rock band, all the buttons and sequencing and stuff like that I don’t really care for. I’m a fan of rock music and what they’re doing now I don’t think is very good.”

I am a fan of both, but I think he is totally off on this one. Some of Radioheads best songs have come off their new albums. Change and progression is one of the best things for bands. I do like the Hold Steady, but in what way have they progressed or changed their style? He also slammed Muse but took time to praise Oasis. Which is ironic because Oasis haven’t quite changed their style either. Oh well.

Another New Wilco Song Played Live!

By Will, August 17th 2008

Wilco who is one of the bands that I listen to a ton, but never really talk about or consider one my favorite bands (wrongfully so!) have played another new song live. The song is titled sunny feeling and is now the second new song (along with “one wing”) that the band has played live since their show at Lollapooloza. These sound great, as you always can expect from Jeff Tweedy and the rest of the band. Downloads of the song are below as well as the video of One Wing from Lolla once again.

The Airborne Toxic Event

By Will, August 17th 2008

So I have recently discovered this band The Airborne Toxic Event and they are the only thing I have been listening to the last few days. I heard their single “Sometime Around Midnight” while listening to Woxy.com‘s broadcast and was very impressed. It just so happens the same day I was in NYC and was able to pick up their album at virgin megastore. I will post a review tomorrow, but so far what I have heard from these California natives is pretty stunning.

The album has great lyrics, melodies that build up frantically, and a good mix of slow/danceable songs. I would keep an eye on this band, they are definitely going to get around very soon. Great stuff!!! I will post the review up tomorrow!

Battles used to be a band that once made no sense to me. They were practically on every best of 2007 list, yet I didn’t comprehend why.The vocals on their hit Atlas didn’t quite do it for me at fist and as a result I ignored them throughout 2007. Ironically it is the same song that made me into a fan of the band! The music that battles plays probably is an acquired taste, but once you get into them oh man. They really made my glad that I gave Atlas a second chance. I have had 3 songs of theirs stuck in my head since, taking turns. You may scratch your head listening to them the first time, but if you go back to them you will be rewarded!

They played a free show at Central Park today so I figured it would be totally worth the trip down. The two opening acts were Gang Gang Dance, and Black Dice. Gang Gang Dance sounded like portishead to me, just a bit on the whiny side. Music was alright but the vocals didn’t do it for me. Black Dice was basically 3 guys playing a mix of noise/electronic/experimental. They basically played the same song for an hour without a break. I did enjoy the first 15 minutes or so of their act but it grew tiresome and lost my attention after that. Not bad music but I guess it wasn’t my type.

Battles made up for the “meh” opening acts for sure! These dudes came on with a cool set, and just looked like cool guys. They came on strong with a strong set filled with songs from their debut album “Mirrored.” The band played long songs that pushed 8-10 minutes sometimes. It wouldn’t have worked any other way. Battles thrives on the recordings of notes looped over each other creating layers of sound that just fills up all the space in your head. They play their instruments so well you cannot help but focus on them. The rhythm section is pretty amazing to sum it up, their drummer John Stanier left me very impressed. It really was quite an experience, this is music that thrives on the outdoors live! The highlight of the day easily as expected was everybody’s favorite song, “Atlas.” This song just rules live, oh man. They play it with so much passion that Tyondai Braxton’s robot vocals speak with a better voice than a humans ever could. It was just raw power, a juggernaut of a song live or not.

I expected a fun show but what I got was above and beyond. This was real rock and roll. I wanted to listen to them for hours more. Forget that robot rock crap. This is what music should sound like. Defiently check Battles out if they stop by near you. If you ignored them out of confusion like I did, give them another shot. Somethings sound better that way. Video of Atlas that I took below!!!

[New] Peter Bjorn and John – Inland Empire

By Will, August 15th 2008 — with 4 comments

Another new song premieres today, busy day on that end. Peter Bjorn and John who most know for the hit single “Young Folks” are back with a new tune called “Inland Empire.” This song is very different from the Swedish bands previous efforts as it is a instrumental that is a bit on the dark haunting side with a bit off jazz even coming in at the end. These guys have decided to change the pace with their next album “Seaside Rock” being all instrumentals.

This is a brave step by the band after such a highly praised/successful album and hopefully it will be another great addition to their catalog. The album comes out on September 23rd, as a vinyl/digital only release limited to 5,000 copies! That is going to be a must buy for any fan!

Los Campesinos are busy busy people! The boys & girls from Cardiff Wales have a new single called “How I Taught Myself To Scream.” All of us who signed up for their mailing list were lucky enough to have this song sent to us. It isn’t off their scheduled new album “We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed” though. Yes you read that correct! Even though they released their debut album earlier this year, they have another one coming out in November! The song in typical Los Campesinos with the duo of male/female vocals, high energy pop-rock. This time throw in some distortion and you got “How I Taught Myself To Scream”

Oasis come back hard here with the first single “Shock Of The Lightning”, off new album Dig Out Your Soul. The song doesn’t waste anytime getting started and is quite immidiate. The brothers claim that it will be immidiate because it was recorded right off the bat. I don’t think it is amazing Oasis by any means, but at this stage for them, it is not bad at all. The song is via youtube below:

Shearwater Live Video at Florence Gould

By Will, August 14th 2008

Got an email introducing me to this band Shearwater. The email linked me to a live performance at the Florence Gould from May of this year. I have seen their name before but never gave them a listen. It is the former collaboration between Johnathan Meiburg and Okkervil River’s Will Sheff. Sheff left Shearwater with Meiburg in order to focus on Okkervil and has continued on ever since. I have read many positive reviews of their new album “Rook” and was interested to hear their stuff.

I let the live show play and enjoyed what I heard. Their music is a bit on the art-rock side, but piano driven with beautiful falsetto vocals from Meiburg. This is quite a cool sound that they have going on. It may take some time to get into these guys, but I have a feeling they will grow on many people. I will be looking out for their album! Check out the performance of “Leviathan, Bound” below live from the Florence Gould!

New Oasis – Falling Down (via Youtube)

By Will, August 14th 2008

Forget about the stupid Oasis feud with Jay-Z. Oasis is back with their a new single caled Falling Down, from their new album “Dig Your Soul.” The song is quite good, one of the better songs I have heard by the brothers into quite some time. Their promise of an epic sound came true with a cool orchestration playing in the background, it works quite well. Noel has brought together some of his best lyrics as well. Enjoy this song, it does give a beam of hope to the new album.

The lads new album comes out October 7th via Big Brothers Recordings.
