Archive for September, 2008

My original post deleted it’s self, so here is another try.

Los Campesinos! who had one of the best songs of last year (pitchfork said so, duh) are back with a brand new song that will be off their album We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed. It will be their 2nd album in the year and it you can definitely expect another fast paced frantic rock album. I mean these guys are working hard for it, would you expect anthing less? The song ‘We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed’ is getting a solid reception for sounding more like the band did on its early EP’s. I am all for it. This song provides an enjoyable listen. There are 3 other songs on their myspace as well that will be on the upcoming album.

Their latest album will be hard to find though. If you don’t get it right away, it may be out of print. Read what the band had to say on their website:

WE ARE BEAUTIFUL, WE ARE DOOMED

[NEW] Vampire Weekend – Ottoman

By Will, September 22nd 2008

Just the other day I made a post about Vampire Weekend playing a new song live. They are one of my favorite new bands, are really nice guys, and have one of the best albums of 2008. They are the still the hottest bands of 2008, and don’t seem to be losing any steam anytime soon.

When I posted about the video of the new live song, there was no title. Now the wonderful blog known as Stereogum has posted the exclusive on it. It is called ‘Ottoman’ and is featured on the soundtrack for the movie Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. It is a great track featuring everything that we love about the Columbia grads. You may notice that Ezra is singing the ever familiar “Peter Gabriel too” lyric (which Stereogum points out too). I thought I was just hearing things but that is not the case.

They have struck gold once again. Go buy the soundtrack tomorrow so you can have this new track!

Stereogum
is streaming the track, go check that out. A big thank you goes out to them!

[NEW] The Killers – Human

By Will, September 22nd 2008 — with 1 comment

All the haters will hate. The rest of us will continue to appreciate. The Killers are one of the better (newer) mainstream acts around. I am not just saying that because I am a fan. They know what they are good at and they do it quite well. I thought Sam’s Town is a hell of a lot better than what people said about it.

The Killers did respond to the haters. This response is called ‘Human’. The song premiered on Radio 1 yesterday and it is all over the internet as expected. ‘Human’ starts out on the slow side but quickly hits into a synth driven beat that is shows the older side to them. It is catchy, danceable, and most importantly memorable. It is a bit on the techno/electronic side so some people may be split on this one.

Their new album ‘Day & Age’ is coming out soon and we should see if the whole album stays in this same direction. The Killers have done it yet again!

The Killers – Human (MP3) **will be deleted after one week..please delete after your listen**

[New Live] Vampire Weekend Song!!

By Will, September 20th 2008

Two nights ago Vampire Weekend played a gig at the Wiltern in San Diego and debuted a brand new song. The title is not known yet, but the video is up thanks to youtube!! Everything Vampire touches has been great, and this sounds like another great song. This has a different feel than all their other songs which is always good. I quite like this. Seems to rely on Ezra’s singing. They really got some charm going on for them. They are still as hot as they were back in January.

I really hope I am able to see Vampire Weekend either Dec 3rd/4th but I don’t know if I can get tickets…sigh

Anyways enjoy the video and a mp3 of the song below.

Vampire Weekend – New Song (Live) (MP3)

“i tried to do handstands for you, but every time i fell for you’

-You will be hearing those lyrics quite a lot in the upcoming months. That’s for sure.

I mentioned this hot new band Chairlift in a previous post but they deserved its own post for sure. Everyone seems to be/will be buzzing about the sweet song used in the ipod nano chromatic ad. The band behind this gem is the Brooklyn native 3 piece Chairlift. The song used in the newest Steve Jobs ad is called ‘Bruises’. The song has a tender side to it that really reminds me of The Moldy Peaches hit ‘Anyone Else But You’. I really cannot get that connection out of my head. It has to be the dual female/male vocals.

The song has a lot going for it. A lot more than you think at first. The song has a catchy bass line with a simple but effective beat working behind it. The vocals are the strength of the song, Caroline Polachek’s voice could not sound any better here. The lyrics are pretty sweet/cute and are effective in the nature of the song. There is no doubt this song will be seen in future movie soundtracks.

The band has become close with other Brooklyn acts such as MGMT and Yeasayer, who they are touring with quite soon actually. Their debut album ‘Does You Inspire You’ comes out on September 30th (my birthday!). These guys got a bright future, they are just getting started to. People will be doing handstands for this song for quite some time….

Check out tour dates, the ipod nano ad itself, and an mp3 (a bonus there too):

New Discovery: Royal Bangs

By Will, September 18th 2008 — with 2 comments

How did I not discover these guys until now?!?? I literally found this band 5 minutes ago and I am currently amazed at how good they are. They are called Royal Bangs and are a 5 men out wanting to rock out of Knoxville, Tennessee. Their sound is combo of all that is rightous in old and new rock. It has hints of 90′s garage rock (Pavement ?) with a little bit of electronic mixed in here and there. Royal Bangs self released their debut album ‘We Breed Champions’ back in 2006, but in 2007 the drummer of the Black Keys signed them to his label Audio Eagle and re-released it this year. Oh man, I got to get my hands on the rest of this album.

The song ‘Brother’ was the first song I heard and WOW it is . It doesn’t waste anytime with 3 guitars thrashing away with some fast paced drumming. I moved onto ‘Broke Calculator’ which took a slower direction that ‘Brother’ but uses more electronics and vocal melodies. Another gem in my eyes. Then there is ‘Cat Swallow’ which has a really cool guitar line that continues throughout.

Royal Bangs have many things going for them. The songs are accessible, catchy, and have strong music/vocal quality. These guys know what they are doing. I would not be surprised to see them being hailed as the next Tapes ‘n tapes and riding the internet to Letterman. Maybe that is a bit too much to say for now, but their set at Bonnaroo and a strong debut album has earned them quite a bit of press. They are slowly building a following/hype machine and these guys may just be the next big thing. Once I get a copy of the album I will try to get a review up. Stream the songs below:

[New] MGMT – Metanoia

By Will, September 18th 2008 — with 3 comments

My god has this band gotten popular. I remember when their album came out the buzz was starting to build, but I never expected them to get as big as they did (McCrren Park Pool anyone?). Their album grew with me over time, it really sounds better after many listens. They have produced some of the best songs of the year. ‘Kids’ is amazing, Time To Pretend and ‘Electric Feel’ are not too far behind. They have all gotten constant spins since January.

So thanks to my friends at Pretty Much Amazing and damien is listening to… I have discovered a newish song from these New York stars. It is a 13 minute epic that songs like a whole bunch of songs and stories combined into one. It provides quite an ineresting listen. There are some really cool things going on in this track. I am curious as to what there new record will sound like.

Give the track a stream below:
