The Shape Of Things To Come

By Will, October 31st 2008 — with 2 comments

Hello there everyone. You know, all my dedicated readers! Thanks for sticking around with me, it is comforting to know that people are reading this site, and that they are enjoying the music I am posting. That is the goal! Sorry that the posts have not been frequent as of late. School has taken over my life with midterms and papers, but soon enough things will get back to normal here. However a few changes are on the way.

First..I am tired of having to use other sites such as savefile, and yousend it to host mp3′s. I am considering a move to wordpress.org so I can self host my whole site. This may take a lot of time and even a little bit of $…so I am not sure when that will happen.

Secondly, I don’t know if I am going to be reviewing albums. At least not the way I have been doing it. I get way to music for myself to handle, and it is just overwhelming for me. If anything, I will post a few thoughts in a small blurb and move on. There is too much good stuff to show you guys, and I get held back trying to force myself to review albums. We will see how that goes.

So in short, things may look a little bit different here, but I promise it will still be the same site that all you flock to get some groovy tunes. thanks for it all, pump up the volume

Introducing : Mongrel

By Will, October 30th 2008

Collaborations are nice. Supergroups are even better. Mongrel is a bit of both. This is the lineup as stated on their myspace:

Mongrel features musicians as and when required but the hub of the band is : Andy Nicholson – ex Arctic Monkeys bassist, Drew McConnell – Babyshambles, Joe Moskow – Reverend & The Makers, Jon McClure – Reverend & The Makers and Lowkey – UK Hip Hop Legend.

It also features Arctic monkeys drummer Matt Helders who will appear from time to time. It is especially nice for me being the huge Arctic Monkeys fan that I am to see one member at least working with the former Arctic; Andy.

I am quite intrigued to see what this group can do. Check out ‘The Menace” & another track below:

Songs I’m Shouting For!

By Will, October 28th 2008 — with 1 comment

There is just way too much good new music out there these days to follow everything. So there is bound to be those few tracks that are stellar but they just happen to slip by your radar. It happens. So why not play catch up. Here are some bands/songs that I just found or finally caught up to. It’s a mega-compilation of sorts.:

The Cool Kids

The Cool Kids have been on my list to get to for over a year it seems. So I finally got my hands on their Bake Sale [EP] and it is absolute fire!! There delivery is clean, lyrics are funny, and their beats will make any room shake. These guys have only released their EP, so look out for their album. That thing will surely be hot.

Horse Feathers

The awesome people from Toolshed sent me this gem in an e-mail a long time ago, but for some reason I let it be. However I recently went back to it and discovered the beauty in Justin Ringle’s fronted Horse Feathers.

The Henry Clay People

Well thanks to you aint no picasso I have discovered the Henry Clay People. This song is awesome, some really cool guitar work. Some of the best moments are between chorus’s. That riff gets more infectious over time. Gotta find more stuff from them for sure.

Introductions can be a tricky thing. My intro to the Brooklyn band Creaky Boards was when they claimed Coldplay ripped off their song “The Song’s I Didn’t Write” (ironicly titled). I didn’t quite believe it, and still don’t but I put the band off for a while. Since that story has sorta died off and the Creaky Boards album is about to drop soon, I felt it was time to jump back in. The song is very enjoyable. I am interested to see how their other songs sound.

An Interview with The Boxing Lesson

By Will, October 28th 2008 — with 1 comment

Thanks to this blog and the power of e-mail, I was able to discover The Boxing Lesson. I reviewed their latest album a few days ago, and their manager Ryan was kind enough to set up an interview with the band. It was my first time conducting an interview, so congrats to them for being a WAWSTSF first. (how exciting right?) A big thanks goes out to them for taking the time to answer a few of my questions. Check it out below folks!! :

WE ALL WANT SOMEONE TO SHOUT FOR INTERVIEW:
The Boxing Lesson

WAWSTSF : How did The Boxing Lesson Start? What motivated you guys to start the band?

PAUL: The Boxing Lesson originally formed in Los Angeles around the turn of the century. We did a couple EPs there as a five piece band which are close to being out of print. Right now, we are in Austin as a three-piece and have two releases down here, “Songs in the Key of C” and “Wild Streaks & Windy Days.” Our motivation came from a shared deep-rooted need to play this music together which initially sparked from a mutual interest in exploring synthesizer sounds, old records and psychedelic drugs.

JAYLINN: My Boxing Lesson started with this guy named Bruno giving me instructions on how not to get hit; which is the most important lesson of all. Bruno motivated me to join a band because actual boxing really hurts.

WAWSTSF : Where did the band name come from?

JAYLINN: The name “BOXING LESSON” is derived from the Hungarian words “boksz”, or “ökölvívás” and “szentlecke”, or “ lecke” meaning “to fill one’s ear-holes with sound causing a euphoric-like sensation”

WAWSTSF : What is your opinion on music/mp3 blogs? Do you feel that they are helping artists, or that the bloggers just use it to gain popularity and make money?
PAUL: I feel that blogs are helping artists connect with more people. It’s a great form of promotion and exposes the music to a particular blog’s community who may not have heard about the band otherwise. Of course, some blogs are just utter crap but others are intelligently written, hold a particular point of view and stay consistent to it. Those are the ones that have become the taste makers in this new media landscape. Everyone wants to be popular and make money. You can’t hold that against anyone in this day and age.
WAWSTSF : What are your plans for the future?

JAYILNN: Getting Pluto re-instated as a planet.
PAUL: Well, our original drummer Jake Mitchell has been in federal prison since September and we are awaiting his appeal in the early months of 2009. So his future is still kind of up in the air. Before he went to jail, we hit the studio with a handful of new songs and laid his drum tracks down with our producer, Tim Gerron. This could turn into a 2009 EP or the beginnings of a new full length. We haven’t figured it out yet. In the meantime, his legal troubles are not stopping this band by any means. We are getting ready to do some more touring with our close friend Kevin Sparks behind the kit. We are heading out west for a quick two week run and The Boxing Lesson plans to hit the southeast and southwest again in January and February leading up to SXSW here in Austin. We just signed a licensing contract with Big Sounds International which we are all very excited about as well. The Boxing Lesson is looking forward to the new year and hopes to do lots of national touring as well as head overseas and hit Europe for the first time as a band. That’s always been a big dream for all of us and we are feeling pretty lucky these days.

WAWSTSF : What is on the ipod?
1. Pink Floyd – Animals

2. Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here
3. Pink Floyd – Meddle
4. Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon
5. Pink Floyd – The Wall

[NEW] Kanye West – Robocop

By Will, October 25th 2008

More brand new Kanye West has surfaced. The next 808 track to poke its head on the internet is called ‘Robocop’ and it is another fantastic kanYe track. It has a really cool beat, & more importantly the autotuner blends well with it. This song is different, but excellent! (Would you expect anything less??)

I honestly have liked everything he has previewed off of 808′s and this just adds to it. This album is shaping up to be something special. People are whining about the change for now, but I guarentee you people will come around and be raving about this album by November. Expect to see it on many top lists. The song is straight fire folks. I am absoultely pumped for the album. Kanye is taking the game to the next level.

Below is Robocop, enjoy:

[New] The Decembersits – O New England

By Will, October 23rd 2008

So first we got a little background of Valerie Plame, which is the first part of the “Always The Bridesmaid” Single Series. Now the b-side from that sinlge has surfaced. It is called ‘O New England’. It isn’t as upbeat as Valerie Plame but rather a nice story to compliment it. Stereogum reports they will be performing “Valerie Plame” on Conan on 11/3.

Part one of the series is already out, look for the rest in the upcoming weeks.

Bloc Party Adds Bonus Tracks To “Intimacy”

By Will, October 23rd 2008 — with 1 comment

Bloc Party’s third album hopefully has settled for most people by now. I think by now people are realizing whether they LIKE Bloc Party or if they LIKE Silent Alarm. That seems to be the two different types of Bloc Party fans.

Anyway, the physical release of “Intimacy” is actually a lot different than the digital release that we saw 2 months ago. The U.S. version of Intimacy has 4 extra songs. ‘Talons’, ‘Letter To My Son’ and ‘Your Visits Are Getting Shorter’, as well as the ever familiar ‘Flux’. So now Bloc Party has added another whole set of songs to make “Intimacy” a hopefully deeper album. Does this help or hurt the album? Does it add more depth, or just drag it along? There is only one way to find out.

Behold the final tracklisting:

“Ares”
“Mercury”
“Halo”
“Biko”
“Trojan Horse”
“Signs”
“One Month Off”
“Zephyrus”
“Talons”
“Better Than Heaven”
“Ion Square”
“Letter To My Son”
“Your Visits Are Getting Shorter”
“Flux”
