Happy New Year!

By Will, December 31st 2008

How was your 2008? Mine was a strange one. It had its up and downs for sure. I left for college, I dealt with death for the first time losing my grandfather, lost and gained friendships and relationships and all that life changing bullshit. Haha. 2008 was a great year for music in my opinion as well as movies. I hope you all a great night last night, and are overcoming those dirty hangovers. Start 2009 right, get in shape, give that person a call that is long overdue, do something to start the year of right.

This new year will bring my first full year blogging. I am still working on my top songs and albums of the year, I have been lazilying sitting on that one for quite some time. Keep an eye out for a new we all want someone to shout for!

2008′s Ignored Albums: The Subways – All Or Nothing

By Will, December 31st 2008 — with 3 comments

My listening habits are weird. In a time when most bloggers are replaying the harder to digest albums for their top of 2008 list, or just for pride I turn to simple straight up pop rock power albums that make me feel good. It may just be the new found stress that the holiday’s and other things have brought this year. Anyhow maybe it is that I just want something fun to listen to after a year of digesting pretty much any and everything that was brought my way. If I didn’t get “that album of 2008″ yet, I doubt I will anytime soon.

Back in the day when I got all my news from the NME (I was young ok?) I fell in love with The Subways. Back in 2006 they were just a bunch of young kids influenced by their favorite bands playing a storm of garage rock tunes with some hidden pop sensibility that could be heard if you listened carefully. Their debut album ‘Young For Eternity’ was a good debut showing tons of promise. Now it is 2008 and they came back stronger. Their 2nd album “All Of Nothing” was released over the summer and went pretty much unnoticed. It may not be anything significantly different from their debut album. However the band has vastly improved their vocals and instrument playing honing in on a sound and making it their trademark. The first three tracks ‘Girls & Boys’, ‘Kalifornia’, and ‘Alright’ are powerhouses that should not be missed. The band keeps on screaming and playing rough garage tunes while also adding in some more emotional/melody based songs like ‘Strawberry Blonde’ that show the band working on all cylinders. The lyrics talk about young love and romance and it does pull you in. They got a real good sound going and you will be drawn in.

This Subways will unfortunately continue to stay low on the radar but if anything it will be good for the fans they have already made. They have already gone in the right direction all by themselves. They are still young and have a lot of time to keep getting bigger and better. This album is a solid sophomore album that actually improves on it’s predecessor.

[New] Morrissey – I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris

By Will, December 31st 2008 — with 3 comments

I recently have been getting into The Smiths intensly. The Smiths hold a special place in most indie kids hearts. Unfortunatly for hipsters alike, they are no longer together. However the talented singer Morrissey is still making music solo and he is still going strong. This brand new song ‘I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris’ is absolutley golden! There is something about Morrissey’s voice and lyrical ability that just creates musical bliss. The song sounds like it could have been another classic from the Smiths themselves if I am being perfectly honest. I actually have never heard a Morrissey song until now. I figured I would dive into the Smiths first before going into solo Morrissey. It seems to be the right decision this song can make us all pretend the Smiths are still together.

‘I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris’ will be off of Morrissey’s new album ‘Years Of Refusal’ which is coming out Febuary 19th of the almost new year!! This song has sparked my interest for it’s release! Give the song a listen right below! :

2008′s Ignored Albums: The Morning Benders – Talking Through Tin Cans

By Will, December 31st 2008 — with 3 comments

I like the Kooks. I think they make extremely catchy Brit-pop, and I decided to catch them at Terminal 5 over the summer. The opening act was a band called the Morning Benders and all I knew about them was that they were slowly gaining some buzz due to impressive live sets opening for the Kooks. They absolutely rocked it that night, and I didn’t realize it until I got home but The Morning Benders did more for me that night then the Kooks did. I bought their album and I was skeptical whether the songs would have the same energy that they did live. Oh, they most certainly do.

I am confused as to why their debut album “Talking Through Tin Cans” has not garnered more attention this year, especially on best of 2008 lists! This album is just a ball of energy of pop music done right. The lyrics are charming and witty, the music is upbeat and groovy. There are huge hooks here at every corner of the songs. I have returned to this album constantly this year, it’s replay value has gotten better and better. These songs want to be blasted loud and stuck in your head for days. These guys know what they are doing and they are making some fun songs! I don’t know why they didn’t get more attention this year. It seems like people are always trying to over digest albums, and often leave out simple pop pleasures. It is never too late to play catch up, buy the album right now and enjoy!

“We All Want Someone To Shout For”

By Will, December 30th 2008

With the newer blog and all I realized I never did explain where my blog’s name came from. Being the huge Arctic Monkeys fan that I am I wanted to name the blog something around their name or songs and one of the lyrics that really stood out for me was on their song “Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?”. The first line that the young genious Alex Turner has to say is “We all want someone to shout for”. After a while I realized that was the perfect name. Sure it is long, but I feel there is a lot of interpretations you can get out of it. The song is one of my favorites by them. Give it a listen below, and find out why I took a lyric from it!

[New Old] Arcade Fire – Burning Bridges

By Will, December 30th 2008

The wonderful Arcade Fire have made a free download available of a old song called ‘Burning Bridges.’ The song is released to go along with the promotion of their documentary DVD Miroir Noir. The song is a 5 minute long instrumental piece that shows the usual Arcade Fire top notch quality. This is the first time they released the song, but it used to be played during their live sets back in 2004 with lyrics too! This instrumental piece doesn’t needs words it has all the emotion you could ask for in a song. Give it a try below, and get on that DVD Preorder!

People have been dying for it, the web sheriff has been working his ass off to prevent a leak, but it looks like Santa had other ideas in mind. I guess the vinyl’s got sent out early, and as a result the album is out there. Maybe it is a secret Christmas gift from Panda Bear and the rest of the boys. Probably not. I haven’t listened, but people are buzzing at the low quality leak saying it is absolutely fantastic as expected. Of all days for this to leak, Christmas day? What timing!

If you know where to look you will find it. If you need help, use your resources widely *hint*

***Even though you may find this leak, be sure to buy the album when it does come out, or attend a concert. I know that many of you don’t see anything wrong with sampling but it is important that if you take advantage of the sample you support the artists themselves.***

By Will, December 25th 2008 — with 1 comment

I want to take a moment to wish all of you a VERRY, VERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS!! I have to say this x-mas is a weird Christmas. The spirit is no where to be found, and I don’t think that I am speaking just for myself. For some reason this year Christmas sort of snuck up on us and there is some serious Christmas charm lacking!! Either way it is here, and I hope you all have a great time spending time with family, GIVING and getting gifts, eating delicious food, and getting lucky under the mistletoe (just kiddin!). Stay safe tonight, enjoy spending time with your loved ones. Seasons greetings from We All Want Someone To Shout For!!!

Here is a mix of some special “indie” Christmas songs. I hope these are enjoyable to be on your music lists for next Christmas!

First, I had to include some of Sufjan Steven’s Christmas songs. He has dedicated so much time towards Christmas songs each year. It goes without saying that they needed to be posted:

[mp3] : Sufjan Stevens – Come On! Let’s Boogey To The Elf Dance!
[mp3] : Sufjan Stevens – O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
[mp3] : Sufjan Stevens – Joy To The World
[mp3] : Sufjan Stevens – That Was The Worst Christmas Ever

Here is one off volume 8, the new volume that found its way online recently:
[mp3] : Sufjan Stevens – Do You See What I See

Now enjoy some of my favorite bands performing their interpretations on some Christmas classics.
