Throughout the course of a year, many artists get critical acclaim but are ignored by most music fans. Of course there are the few bloggers and music fans that pick up on this, but somehow the artist never gains the some blog buzz that other artists receive. I want to try to pick a few of the artists that I have discovered in 2008 that have really impressed me.

Meet Sun Kil Moon. It is the project of Mark Kozelek, who you may or may not know from his other band Red House Painters. I discovered the band from the SOMB music forums, and think that they deserve a lot more attention than they have gotten. I mean pitchfork did give their 2008 released album “April” an 8.3, but they still seemed pretty off the radar for most of the year.

What is going on here? “April” is an absolutely gorgous album. Haunting vocals, narrative storytelling, acoustic guitars all provide with such a relaxing listen. You can listen to this record and it just evokes old memories of your past. Intentional or not, it is not something that happens to me when listening to music often. This music will affect you in one way or another, and it will be different for each person. That is the beauty of music. This is an album that I find sounds better late at night, or taking a long drive. Why not both?

There is a lot that I could say about this album, but words can’t do it justice. Give the songs I posted below a listen, and if they don’t do anything for you….I’m sorry for you.
