Hot Chip & Peter Gabriel Cover Vampire Weekend!

This is pretty fucking cool! I saw this the other day and thought it was a joke. The awesome Hot Chip and Peter Gabriel have covered Vampire Weekend’s awesome song ‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa’. It all makes sense, after all Vampire Weekend name drops Peter Gabriel throughout the song.

This is a pretty awesome take on the song by Hot Chip and a nice vocal performane by Mr. Gabriel. It is pretty hilarious how he decided to add to the lyrics. After the trademark “It feels so unnatural, Peter Gabriel too. It feels so unnatural to sing your own name.” Good good stuff.

Honestly anything involving Vampire’s name has been awesome. This is a can’t miss cover of 2008 for sure. Download it below:

[New] Franz Ferdinand – What She Came For

By Will, December 18th 2008

Stereogum posted a great live performance of Franz’s new song ‘What She Came For’ which can be found off their new album ‘Tonight: Franz Ferdinand.’ It is a pretty great song that builds up eventually leading to a guitar influenced jam freak out that gets me every time. This is Franz Ferdinand at their best, good guitar work, rhythem section complimenting Alex’s chorus so effortlessly. Just a kick in the face . 1/26 cannot come fast enough!! Enjoy it below:

Oasis Live @ MSG (NYC, 9/17/08)

By Will, December 18th 2008

I never thought I would be able to see Oasis live, especially not this year. However a friend of mine invited me to catch them at the Garden last night and it was a lot of fun. Opening acts Matt Costa and Ryan Adams and the Cardinals were decent opening acts that were overall mediocre. Everyone in MSG was just dying to catch a glimpse of the legendary Gallagher brothers and the rest of of Oasis.

They came on stage with a bang starting with the Definitely Maybe classic ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’. Oasis didn’t slow down their momentum at all going right into ‘Lyla’ and their new rocker ‘The Shock Of The Lightning’. Oasis delivered anthematic performances, getting the crowd into it right from the start. Liam Gallagher just sorta stood around for most of the songs, along with the rest of the band. This has gotten them some complaints that the shows are not engaging. This however didn’t bother me all too much because it was too cool to get to see songs like ‘The Masterplan’, ‘Morning Glory’, and ‘Songbird’ live. Songs off the new album like ‘To Be Where There Is Live’ sounded a lot better live then they do on the album.

Liam’s voice is a bit better, but he is unable to carry the notes where they are oh too familiar in ‘Wonderwall’. The Noel songs were some of the best of the whole night (‘Don’t Look Back In Anger). They ended the show properly with the absolutely awesome classic ‘Supersonic’, and ‘Champagne Supernova’. They ended the whole set with The Beatles ‘I Am The Walrus’ which was pretty good, but I couldn’t help but wish they ended their show with one of their own classics.

Oasis live was an overall good time. Although they just stood around throughout the show, the immense tunes made up for it. I can now say I have seen Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back In Anger live. If only I could add Live Forever to that list.

My videos didn’t get saved by my camera somehow. Here is a good one I found:

MGMT & Of Montreal Side Project: Blikk Fang Album Details

By Will, December 16th 2008 — with 2 comments

Blikk Fang will be the name of the super-side project of Andrew VanWyngarden from MGMT and Kevin Barnes from Of Montreal. The two stars plan to get together to record sometime next year once their schedules are free’d up. Kevin Barnes said that “We’ve actually created about 20 minutes of music, but that was the early part of last year. We’ve both been travelling like crazy so it’s hard to get together. The stuff we’ve done so far is sort of a soulful prog. It’s probably gonna be a pretty schizophrenic, crazy album.” Jon Brion who has collaborated with the likes of Ellioty Smith and Kanye West is another possibly to get on board.

I had no idea that they had intentions of getting together to collaborate. Cool stuff! I found out about this via NME.

I have been waiting impatiently for a new Yeah Yeah Yeah’s record since their 2006 record Show Your Bones. It’s almost been 3 years now! Here is a little holiday special for you. It is pretty nice song to get you ready for Christmas. It hasn’t even hit me that Christmas is 9 days away. Where the hell did the time go??

This is some cool stuff, and rumor is that the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s are in the studio working on the third album. Will this be enough to hold you off? Maybe at least untill the 25th.

As always thank you to the great Stereogum for posting this.

Pitchfork’s Top 10 Tracks Of 2008 (With MP3′s)

By Will, December 16th 2008 — with 1 comment

No matter how annoyed and pretentious their reviews can come off, we can all agree that Pitchfork does have a great taste in music. I mean some of the stuff that they post is too obscure for the tightest jean wearing hipster, but they do show us a lot of cool new music that we may have not heard of otherwise. Their top 10 singles is a pretty solid one this year, most of them I can honestly say I am putting on mine once I get around to it. #8-#1 are all some of my favorite songs from the year. The rest of the list is pretty great too, they picked DLZ from TV On The Radio, Oxford Comma and M79 from Vamprie Weekend, and other great songs. Check out the full list here, and give a sample of their TOP 10 songs of the year right below:

10. Estelle (Feat Kanye West) – American Boy

9. Portishead – Machine Gun

8. Air France – Collapsing at Your Doorstep

7. Cut Copy – Hearts On Fire

6. Deerhunter – Nothing Ever Happened

5. M83 – Kim & Jessie

4. Santogold – L.E.S. Artistes

3. Hot Chip – Ready For The Floor

2. Fleet Foxes -White Winter Hymnal

1. Hercules and Love Affair – Blind

Stereogum just posted a old track from MGMT man Andrew VanWyngarden. This song goes back 3 years from Andrew’s days at Wesleyan College way before MGMT was a thought. His old college friend Ethan Leinwand was at his side during this time, instead of his MGMT buddy Ben Goldwasser.

This is some pretty neat stuff. I gotta admit, the synth’s are pretty groovy midway through. So this is what pre-KIDS looks like? Give it a listen below.

Band To Watch: Local Natives

By Will, December 15th 2008 — with 4 comments

Local Natives have been compared to Arcade Fire, Beirut, Grizzly Bear and Broken Social Scene with the vocal harmonies of Fleet Foxes. Each and every one of these comparisons have some truth in them.

For half a year the band spent lots of time in a two bedroom house in California. During this time songs were written and recorded leading to their debut album Gorilla Manor (set for an early 2009 release). Three of the band members sing sharing harmonies and lead vocals. Band members often engage in switching of positions and their own instruments. They invite friends and fans to provide some extra percussion. The sharing of harmonies calls out for references to Grizzly Bear and Fleet Foxes.

Local Natives are a band that put on an energetic live show that you need to experience live. When reading their bio something stood out to me right away: “Local Natives is one of those rare bands who is defined by their ability to deliver live. In fact, it has been more of a challenge for the group to translate the vibrant and exciting nature of their performances to a recording than vice versa.”

They have received media attention from MTVU and this winter they are going on the first full national tour. I plan to check out one of their NYC shows in January. Check out some tour dates and the mp3 of Airplanes. The song is incredible. These guys will make a name for themselves in the upcoming year, keep an eye out:

Yes, a post containing a Britney Spears song. Don’t get used to it. I can’t stand the pop princess. However a pop star I adore is Lily Allen. She took the time to record a cover of Britney’s newest hit ‘Womanizer’. The cover is a delightful one. Honestly, everything that Lily Allen does sounds so good on the ears, and brings a smile onto my face all the time. A good fun cover to get your Monday started right!

I was laughing when I heard the DJ say “check me out stereogum I got a Lily Allen song you’ve never heard”. Funny stuff!
