Handsome Furs are the husband and wife duo of Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade’s guitarist/singer) and Alexei Perry. The band could be described as a bit of Wolf Parade’s alt sound combined with some more electronics. In other words a gift from god himself. I can’t help but describe it as Wolf Parade, I am so used to Dan’s voice gracing their tracks. This was my first time listening to the band, I don’t know why I didn’t give them a shot earlier.
So one listen through the album and I am very, very impressed. The album is great. Dan’s vocals, combined with lush synth’s is genius. Some of the guitar work he produces here is mesmerizing. I have to say, this exceeded all my expectations by a mile. This is some impressive stuff! Every song is top notch with a high quality. I guess the husband wife duo allows them to work off of each other and create one hell of a sound. To be honest, a large majority of the songs jumped out at me and truly stood out. Out of all the songs the true standouts are ‘Legal Tender’, ‘Evangeline’, ‘Talking Hotel Arbat Blues’, and the GREAT closing track ‘Radio Kaliningrad’.
This is one hell of a surprise. 2009 is off to some start huh?
Dan Boeckner keeps giving me more reasons to keep him as one of my favorite musicians on the scene today. I am all aboard the Handsome Furs bandwagon! Although I don’t know about the album art….
