Band To Watch: Surf City

By Will, February 27th 2009 — with 1 comment Band To Watch MP3

Surf City are a band from New Zealand that have pop aspirations. The songs are lo-fi but in often works to their favor over the course of their self titled EP. Take a look at their influences listed on their myspace: sonic youth, the clean, velvet undergound, the jesus and mary chain, the beach boys, the zombies. That should give you some idea of the different sounds and genres that Surf City put together. There are some vocal moments that gave me an Animal Collective vibe (Avey Tare more so).  The lo-fi vocals over the sharp guitars also reminded me of The Strokes! These are all good things! Surf City put together a really strong 6 song EP that demonstrates their talent effectively. I am impressed, grab this EP immideatley! Try out two of my favorite songs:

I think these guys used to be called Kill Surf City maybe. I can’t see any of em on a surfboard but love the music. A bit of fresh air!
