NEW | Phoenix – Lisztomania

By Will, March 12th 2009 — with 1 comment

Phoenix’s new album “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” is another stunner from the french pop masters. (They have done it again) One of the tracks that truly stood out to me is the album opener “Lisztomania”. The song is everything Phoenix has been doing right for years, plus everything they have learned since. Colored me very impressed. This is a exhilarating 4 minute pop-rock ride.

Synths and guitars together are such a delight. Am I wrong?? If you think so just shut up and hit play:

Jack White’s New Band: The Dead Weather

By Will, March 11th 2009 — with 4 comments

Jack White likes to keep busy. Being in The White Stripes and Raconteurs isn’t enough for the rock star. Now he has joined a new band with Alison Mosshart of The Kills, Jack Lawrence from The Raconteurs, and Dean Fertita who has helped with both Queens of the Stone Age and The Raconteurs. Woah that is pretty cool. Jack is singing but he put his guitar duties on hold. Jack White is on the drums for The Dead Weathers. That is pretty damn cool.

Their debut album “Horehound” is expected to see a release in June. Below I got the bands first single “Hang You From The Heavens” and it’s b-side “Are Friends Electric?” (Gary Numan Cover) for you to hear.

“Hang you Up” is a southern heavy rocker with vocals from both Jack and Alison. The guitars are flying full force. It did remind me a bit of The Raconteurs playing style. The Numan cover is right up there too. God does Jack White do anything that doesn’t kick ass?

cheers to culture bully for the mp3′s

Local Natives Building Up Hype

By Will, March 11th 2009 — with 3 comments

Back in December I introduced you guys to The Local Natives, and told you that they were a band that would be making a splash in 2009. The band has kept in touch with me and has given a full update on what they are up to. They are in the process of getting their debut album Gorilla Manor” ready for release this year. You already should be well acquainted with “Airplanes”, it an absolutely outstanding track that you shouldn’t go without. In addition I have heard “World News” and “Stranger Things” and they only continue to impress me. These guys are on their way to making one impressive debut. I put the tracks below for your streaming pleasure.

The band is also making a stop at SXSW and if you are attending & wanna find out what the band is all about look at the attached poster with their set times:

The band also recorded some tracks with Daytrotter in January and our planning to release a 5 song EP with some unreleased recorded tracks. If you see the band at SXSW you may be able to snag a hard copy. Finally, check out a breathtaking rendition of Airplanes that the band did in an abandoned NYC warehouse. A bit of reverb heaven. It is after the mp3 below:

It wasn’t until I read this press release that I realized the infamous ex-Libertine tabloid king known as Pete Doherty is now going by Peter Doherty for his solo album. Interestingly it is listed as Pete on sites like play.com but on his myspace it is listed as Peter. Which is it ??? If it is Peter than I guess Peter is finally trying to straighten things out. Good for him either way. On a side note…tomorrow Pete turns 30 years old. Wow where has the time gone?

I posted one track off of his upcoming album Grace/Wastelands already and now I have another track for you guys. This time I give you “New Love Grows On Trees”. The track sounds like Pete sat down in a dark room and just spilled his heart out with an acoustic by his side. I am once again sold on another Pete solo song. This album could shape up quite nicely!

The Deer Tracks

By Will, March 11th 2009 — with 1 comment

I finally got around to adding the sound cloud app to my site and the first track that I received was a good one. It is from a UK electronic duo called The Deer Tracks who consist of David Lehnberg and Elin Lindfors. The best way to describe them would be a mix of Imoghen Heap and The Postal Service. With that said they have a really nice mellow electronic sound. Calling the music beautifully would not be a stretch at all. The song they sent me was “127SexFyra” and it is a delight. I can picture the music video having a dramatic sad scene during the cold winter. Any electronic music that allows the mind to create imagery is always a plus for me. Their debut album “Aurora” came out in the UK just two days ago and is getting some nice press. I definitely recommend looking into them!

A Must Read Blog: From John Ryan Pike’s Mother

By Will, March 10th 2009 — with 4 comments

When listening to the wonderful band Ra Ra Riot the death of their original drummer John Ryan Pike often comes to my mind. It always saddens me to think about the death of a man not too much older than myself who had a wonderful future with such a great band. More importantly John was always known for his kind nature and being a really outstanding individual. It has almost been two years since his tragic death but he is well remembered.

I bring up this sad topic because I recently stumbled upon a special blog. His mother Paula Pike has created a blog in order to keep John’s memory alive, as well as encouraging peeople to demonstrate the same acts of kindness that John showed. I just read through every post and it is some really heart-warming stuff. It really made me think about what values I hold important, and how I am going about life right now. I have let to many stupid things bother me, rather than enjoying the important things in life.

The blog is really special and whether you are a Ra Ra Riot diehard or just happend to pass by my blog I encourage you to read his moms blog, it is absolutely great. Share it with a friend, with a bigger blog, with anyone. This deserves to be read.

The RIAA Helping One Family At A Time

By Will, March 10th 2009 — with 1 comment

The RIAA is out to make more and more fans each day. They now have decided to sue a chronically ill teen. The saddest part of this is that this girl is a19-year-old who suffers from pancreatitis and severe depression. The medical bills are mounting for her and her mother who makes only $8.25 an hour. Apparently it was over 10 songs that she has denied to sharing. The girl wasn’t able to make court because of her illness so the judge entered a default judgment against her for close to $8,000. Blah.

You can read the whole article here.

My god just reading that makes me sick. You got people sharing full discographys every day and doing all kinds of other shit. Yet they are suing this poor girl and her family. I hope they RIAA is proud to take the money. Like Hinder and Brittney’s labels need more money….

Photons – Photons [EP]

By Will, March 10th 2009 — with 2 comments

There is nothing better to brighten your day than some charming pop heavy rock! San Fanciscos Photons have the formula down to pact. With their delightful six song EP the band has proven to be one of 2009s worthiest contenders for best new bands. Songs like “This Must Be Love” (absolutely a must listen!!!) and “What Do You Want From Me” jump out of your speakers with all of their passion and energy. The rest of the EP is a showcasing of this bands talents. Strong and distinct vocals, clean guitars, delicious synth’s. Every instrument (many of them at that!) are used to their finest ability. The band has a lot of talent and it really shows with their well mannered sound. It is uplifting, charming, happy, and colorful. They have all the goods to be a successful pop happy band.

With this EP Photons have satisfied my pop needs completely. Keep an eye out!

NEW | Maximo Park – Wraithlike

By Will, March 10th 2009 — with 1 comment

Maximo Park’s 2nd album didn’t have the same effect on me that their great debut album “A Certain Trigger” had. Here they are with a brand new track titled “Wraithlike” which will be on their upcoming album “Quicken The Heart”. The band has posted the song for free on their website for 2 weeks only. Keep in mind this is not the first single but rather just a first taste.

My verdict? The track is good! Their are tons of cool things going on. Badass synths in the background, and those ever so familiar vocals! They remain one of the better bands in the UK putting out a consistent amount of quality tunes. Can’t wait for the rest!
