[Video] Phoenix – Lisztomania

By Will, April 15th 2009 — with 2 comments

One of the standouts from Phoenix’s awesome new album “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” is the album opener “Lisztomania”. The video is really cool, filmed in a retro style. I thought it was pretty cool.

I want to see them live. If you do to, try to catch them at one of these dates (see them plus a mp3, after the jump):

The Horrors – Primary Colours

By Will, April 15th 2009 — with 2 comments

I will make a statement right now. If you disliked the Horrors first album “Strange House”, throw away your dislike for them. So many people judge them on their image, and that is just stupid + unfair. I had a good time with their debut, it was a good record. However even I thought that they were going to fall of the map. I expected their follow up to be a weak attempt of recreating “Strange House”. Holy shit was I wrong.

Their new album “Primary Colours” is a stunning recreation of themselves. It is practically a different band! I read that The Horros locked themselves indoors without any windows or contact with anyone for quite sometime while recording this new album. The result of this is pretty spectacular. I did enjoy their debut, but it hardly connected to me the way their new album has. The rest of the world is going to be on the horrors bandwagon pretty soon. It wasn’t cool to like them before. Well, I promise you the tide has shifted.

Their are hints of shoegaze, post-punk, and new wave meshed with their original dark garage sound. I talked about their single (a contender for song of the year for me) Sea Within A Sea and what a vast difference it was from the bands first album. After giving Primary Colours enough proper listens I can assure you that Sea Within A Sea was not a fluke, but rather a hint of the greatness that was to come. The band still has the same dark murkiness, but they combine it with snyth heavy experimentation, creating some brilliant soundscapes along the way.

My friends used to rip on me for being a fan of the Horrors. Well once the press is done raving this album, I am sure everyone will suddenly be fans of The Horrors. Even I didn’t expect to say this about the Horrors but they may have crafted one of 2009′s finest albums.

[NEW] The Streets – I Love My Phone

By Will, April 14th 2009 — with 2 comments

Twitter is taking over the world slowly but surely. Mike Skinner who is known under the name the Streets, recently twitted the following on his account :

I am going to tweet 3 new songs this week. I can’t be bothered with all this trying to sell you music. It wastes valuable time

Hmmm, looks like artists are starting to realize the times are changing. At least Mike is adapting to this change. Quite generous of you Mr. The Streets! The song is called “I Love My Cell Phone” and I give it two thumbs up. I think his last album “Everything Is Borrowed” was a lot better than the rest of the world thought. Most people ignored the damn record! The Streets deserve better than that! Anyway, the first song is not too shabby. Lets see what he has in store for us with the next two!

I already stated many times that “Help I’m Alive” by Metric is one of the cooler songs that 2009 has brought us thus far. I just got an email telling me about a pretty chill remix that The Twelves did for the track. The result is one that I am quite happy with. They made a dance ready song even more dance ready. I applaud.

Camera Obscura – French Navy & My Maudlin Career

By Will, April 14th 2009 — with 2 comments

Camera Obscura’s new album “My Maudlin Career” is set to come out next weekend but I wanted to get these tracks out this week. I got two of the highlights from the album for you guys. “French Navy” is the first single released from the album and for good reason. It’s a damn fine song. There is just no comparisons to the delightful vocals of Tracyanne Campbell and the almsot effortless playing of the rest of the band.

So here we are. Another Tuesday, which means another day for your wallet to go empty. Well now a days it just means more harddrive space filled up with music, and less…porn? I kid, I kid!! But god damn, the time is flying by. My spring break absolutely flew by! It feels like just yesterday I was preparing my post for last tuesdays releases. AH

The Boy Least Likely To – Playground

The Boy Lest Likely To have such a nice, pleasant sound that you cannot listen to without having a smile on. If you are in a bad mood ready to kick the shit out of someone, I don’t reccomend putting these guys on. They are just too happy! This second LP for the band is getting a nice word of mouth. I got the track “Saddle Up” for you, it is a warm delight to get you through this week!

Death Cab For Cutie – The Open Door [EP]

Death Cab are one of my favorite bands. I don’t really advertise it as much for whatever reason but I do own every single LP of theirs. They are a band that I can rely on for every single release. They released a new EP titled The Open Door in order to let some of the b-sides from their last album “Narrow Stairs” see the light of day. These songs are all very good. Some of these tracks are totally album worthy. They just didn’t fit the mold of the album unfortunatly. Either way, this is a great value EP from one of the most reliable bands in the game.

Metric – Fantasies

I wrote a little bit about Metric a little while ago and pointed out the strengths of the bands new album. You can read that here. There really is not too much else to add except that this band knows how to make a groovy tune! I included the album standout “Help I’m Alive”. It is one of my favorite tracks of 2009 so far, so I hope you enjoy it as well:

Pomegranates – Everybody, Come Outside!

Pomegranates are a indie band from Cincinati, Ohio that play quirky pop rock that has been getting the attention of everyone on the scene. They have a very nice sounds going on. Sorta sweet sounding, like their name. Mhhhhmm

[mp3] : Pomegranates – Corriander

Silversun Pickups – Swoon

Silversun Pickups are a great band, that only seem to get half the amount of attention that they deserve. They have really honed in our there sound and crafted another great album. It is equally as good as their debut, if not better. I guess time will tell but one thing I know for sure is that the opening song “There’s No Secrets This Year” is a fantastic opener.

[mp3] : Silversun Pickups – There’s No Secrets This Year

Yonlu – A Society In Which No Tear Is Shed Is Inconceivably Mediocre

I was first introduced with Yonlu through Wendy Williams of Toolshed. She sent me a 3 track sampler of this kids haunting tracks. They are even more haunting to find out that Yonlu commited suicide leaving only a note to his parents and his music. Well his music is now out there and getting a really warm response. Rightfully so. It’s a dame shame to think that this kid will never get to see how much people adore his music. RIP Yonlu. Here is a great write up about him.

[NEW] | Peaches – Talk To Me

By Will, April 13th 2009 — with 1 comment

A new song from Peaches has arrived my way. It is called “Talk To Me” and it is the first single from her upcoming new studio album ” I Feel Cream”. Soulwax had production duties on this one. This song has a really nice feel to it. This fruit is dope! A potential club smash on the dancefloor??

[New] White Rabbits – Percussion Gun

By Will, April 13th 2009

The White Rabbits have toured with the Walkmen before. This makes sense, because the White Rabbits sort of remind me of The Walkmen. Both bands are capable of sitrring up a certain feeling of atmosphere and mood. The White Rabbits are also from Brooklyn consisting of 6 members. They are getting ready to release their sophmore album “It’s Frightening” on May 19th. (May is set to be a pretty insane month!) Britt Daniel from Spoon produced it and is said to have influenced the White Rabbits sound greatly.

Here is the outstanding first cut from the album titled “Percussion Gun”. I’m digging it, you can totally see the Britt Daniel influence. These cool cats will also be at all points west! Another reason why this years APW will be outstanding!

Songs That Are Gripping My Soul

By Will, April 13th 2009

I have so much music sitting on my desktop right now. It is insane. A lot of the time I find new music or get a mp3 in an email and download it to my desktop so that I have it there to listen whenever I get a chance. However what happens is I find more and more and never get around to listening to it so it just builds up as clutter. Well I have finally tried to clean things up so that my Kristen Stewart background can actually see the light of day!

I deleted many of the songs that I received via email. Those promoters sure know how to make their artists sound better than they actually are. However there are plenty of great finds that resulted in my massive mp3 hunt. Lets get started shall we?? ::

[mp3] : Dirty Projectors – Stillness Is The Move

- Stillness Is The Move is a brand new track from the highly regarded Brooklyn band (god I feel like I write about a Brooklyn band once a day!). They are known for their unique arrangements and sound. Some people don’t get them, but if you really dig deep you can find some mind blowing stuff in their catalogue. This song just sounds so organic and pure. Great stuff.

Here is another track to demonstrate the genius that Dirty Projectors are capable of:

[mp3] : Dirty Projectors – No More

[mp3] : And The Moneynotes – Bolinda

- And The Moneynotes are a very cool band from Scranton, Pennsylvania. I saw them open for The Spinto Band/Rural Alberta Advantage last Sunday and was pleasantly surprised. This track Bolinda was a memorable track that sounds like a callback to the days of swing with some Americana and whiskey mixed in there. They cover dozens of different genres in one track, which is quite a feat. This track just has a really fun vibe that brings out the inner r&b child in us all. This is infectious as shit!

[mp3] : Junior Boys – Hazel

Junior Boys always have crafted really chill electro-pop that you simply cannot resist. The newest album from the duo of Jeremy Greenspan and Matthew Didemus is nothing short of fantastic from what I’ve heard. Those vocals are all so passionate!

[mp3] : Amy Winehouse – You Know I’m No Good

This song to me, is 10x better than Rehab. When Arctic Monkeys covered it, it made my love for the song even greater. She may be a mess in real life, but in the studio she lays down some killer r&b.
