Beck keeps on rolling. Not only is he continuing his wonderful Velvet Underground & Nico album covers at a steady pace, he is also offering acoustic renditions of Modern Guilt tracks! If that wasn’t enough, he is also doing little interviews/discussions with other artists (such as Tom Waits)!! All of this can be found for free on one page at his website!!

The next cover that Beck delivered to the world is “All Tomorrow’s Parties”. This is a fucking beautiful cover, that is all that I can say. This is a must listen! I also realized I forgot to post the record club’s cover of “Venus In Furs” so I threw that in here for you as well! That one is rockin’ as well!!

So hey! Keep it locked right here for the rest of Beck’s Record Club Covers!! Is anyone else keeping you up to date on this wonderful project like We All Want Someone To Shout for? I didn’t think so!

Enjoy these, and look out for more!

The folk-pop Boston, Massachusetts band Main Drag delightfully cover LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends”. They surely do make it their own by keeping their style while still maintaining the same feeling that James Murphy had when he wrote the song.

You can tell The Main Drag have a flare for the dramatic, and it works perfectly with a song as epic as “All My Friends”.

500 Days Of Summer

By Will, July 23rd 2009 — with 1 comment

Last Saturday I went to see 500 Days Of summer in NYC with my girlfriend, and really enjoyed it. The movie was very fresh and original, especially for a romance film. The movie is very honest and realistic, which is rare for “romance” movies. It isn’t the happiest love story, but that is actually one aspect of it many critics (and myself) appreciate.

Director Marc Webb uses some cool film techniques that allow the film to stand out on its own. Both Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Zooey Deschanel give very good performances and work together perfectly! It is right up there with Adventureland and Up for my favorite movies of 2009. Go see it if you have it showing at a theater near you!!

The movie also has an amazing soundtrack. Here are some songs from it, that really add to the film:

[mp3] : The Smiths – Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want

[mp3] : She & Him – Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want (The Smiths Cover)

[mp3] : Hall & Oates – You Make My Dreams

All Points West did it right. Beastie Boys sadly are out,  but they managed to pull in fellow Brooklyn rapper Jay-Z, and make everyone happy. This is actually his first American festival appearance.

Two thumbs up from me, this is a great, great, replacement! I remain pumped for Friday night!!!

Roc Boys in the building tonight!

Julian Plenti – Games For Days

By Will, July 22nd 2009

I’ve only gotten through Paul Banks (he’s going under the moniker Julian Plenti) debut solo album once, and think it is alright so far. I may need some more listens to really get a solid grasp on it. One song that really stuck out right away is “Games For Days.” It has a bit of the rock flare that you can say he probably borrowed from Interpol’s sound.  That is not to say that he doesn’t put his own personal stamp on it though.

It builds up pretty nice, some solid guitar riffage here. Thumbs up!!!

His album Julian Plenti is…Skyscraper comes out officially on August 4th!

[NEW] Islands – No You Don’t

By Will, July 22nd 2009

Islands are back with some new material! I enjoyed last year’s Arm’s Way , but I still preferred their sound on Return To The Sea. Nick Diamond and co. are back with their third album called Vapours. They are getting the ball rolling by releasing a song called “No You Don’t” for your listening pleasure. It seems like a good mix from the styles of their previous albums, which is good enough for me.

As long as the Islands keep putting out some fun indie rock, we won’t complain. Although we wouldn’t mind seeing The Unicorns possibly come back someday!!!

Cancer sucks. The music world was hit hard yesterday when we all learned that Adam Yauch, a.k.a. MCA from the Beastie Boys has a cancerous tumor. This cancells all of their festival performances and will delay their upcoming LP.

All of the delays are 2nd to his health issue of course!!! Luckily it seems like they found it early enough where he will be ok, but this still really sucks. I am sad that I won’t get to see these legends at All Points West next Friday, but what can you do? (I wonder who is going to replace them, that a huge, huge, loss!!!!!

Also, it seems that the timing was good with the premire of a brand new song off their new album Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 1. It is called “Too Many Rappers” featuring Nas. I really like it, it’s a lot of fun, and a great comeback! This shall hold us over until the Boys return!

Here’s to a speedy recovery Adam!!!

Sounds From The Inbox (Part 3)

By Will, July 21st 2009

Part 3 of the series featuring some of  the good tracks that I have received via email. My inbox is basically 400-500 emails deep, and the pile seems to only get bigger and bigger!! I have had more computer issues as of late (genius bar service sucks btw!!!!) and I still have not caught up at all on these emails. Ugh. Expect a lot more of these!

I have included the song they sent me, along with their myspace where you can find out some more about them. I don’t have enough time unfortunately to right a description for each band/track so I will leave it up to you to do some homework!

[NEW] Pearl Jam – The Fixer

By Will, July 21st 2009 — with 1 comment

Last month I showed you guys “Get Some” from Pearl Jam’s upcoming LP Backspacer. Now we got the first official single from the album, and it is “The Fixer”. To tell you the truth I did expect more from a Pearl Jam single. While it isn’t the best thing they have done, it still is a good listen. It’s upbeat and catchy. Something isn’t completely clicking for me in my initial listens though.

I’ll keep spinning it, and hopefully it will grow!!

The Flaming Lips are one of a kind. Every album they release has it’s own identity. Year after year they find ways to make the weirdest music sound so accessible and fresh. There is no one else quite like them.

Wayne Coyne and co. are releasing a new album in September called Embryonic and two songs off of it have surfaced! I got Silver Trembling Hands & Convinced Of The Hex for your ears, and they are both great. After the sorta disappointing At War With The Mystics it seems like The Flaming Lips are back on track for the highest quality that they are known for. “Silver Trembling Hands” is nuts, what a groove from that bass!!! Add this to the summer playlist asap!!
