Beck’s record club project has not lost any steam. Beck and his friends are continuing to cover The Velvet Undergound & Nico, and they are now up to the classic “Heroin”. There is no doubt that this would be a difficult task. This is not the easiest songs to cover.
I hate to be negative, but whatever, I usually am pretty positive and upbeat on here…The song is a bit out there, and all over the place. However, you have to realize that this is the way Beck intended it to be, and since he is offering his own interpretation of these songs, I will not be a hater. (Hell, from their dialogue at the end of the recording, I think they began questioning the cover!!!)
I think Lou Reed would appreciate this valiant effort either way.
What do you think?

I find that songs like that one from Lou Reed at the time it first came out my life was a mess as the song does express. If I didn’t go to rehab and follow one Golden Rule. I learned that by relocating 1500 miles and finding a different kind of friend and a better way of life. I now would be dead like most all the so called friends that have stayed in the same town and the same way of life. I think positive lyrics with good popular sounding music is the best way to reach the younger generation to go the right way in life.

Actually ‘Heroin’ is a fairly easy song to cover… I have done it in several bands myself (ambiguity intentional). I like this version though I like it mostly because I think I get what they were going for with this, which was not a faithful recreation of sound or concept. I think the whole idea of the Record Club Project is great, and I think starting with an epic touchstone like ‘The Velvet Underground and Nico’ says a lot about the intent. Not my favorite of the covers so far, but it definitely does the two things a cover should do… it makes you reconsider the original and it makes you go back and listen to the original.
I hope they do Black Sabbath’s ‘Paranoid’ album at some point. And maybe King Crimson’s ‘In the Court of the Crimson King’…
