The new Weezer single (If You Are Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To has trickled to the internetz. I had no expectations after hearing two of their new songs from their Japan show.
However, “(If You Are Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To” is actually a decent Weezer pop/rock song. It is not legendary Weezer or anything, but it shows some promise. The song is catchy, riding a really infectious guitar riff. Rivers almost starts rapping and just as you get a bit turned off, the chorus kicks in and you can’t help but smile.
I don’t know how I feel about this song yet. I am a bit on the fence. The song has a pretty glorious chorus, & it is stuck in my head already. Although I had my initial doubts, I am happy to hear new Weezer. This is a fun song, and I am content with it.
This is where you guys come in. What do you think?

I quite like it! Given the Weezer quality scale these days ranges from the atrocities of ‘Beverly Hills’ or ‘We Are All On Drugs’ to something passable such as ‘The Angel And The One’ or ‘The Greatest Man..’, this ranks with the latter. Not too bad…
This is much better than those songs “I’m your daddy” and … whatever that other one was called. Rivers’s talent for songwriting is apparent in this new song, and I quite like the harmonies and the lack of cheesy 80′s guitar solo, but still, there is nothing interesting or innovative in this song. It is a nice little song but nothing more. It’s generic. It will be forgotten. If Rivers could sit down and challenge himself to write something more creative (like the red album’s “Greatest man that ever lived”) and then put in a little bit more sincere rock n roll spirit, it could work. The man has it in him. He’s a great guitarist. Unfortunately he’s happier writing pop songs for frat boys and girls who wear way too much pink. Thus, we get songs like this that feel so incredibly phoned in. Weezer could be so much more, but instead they’re just squandering their talent and settling for sappy garbage.
I’m sorry, was that a bit harsh? Pat Wilson himself once said “You’re not a true weezer fan unless you hate weezer”.
