Sleep Whale – Houseboat

By Will, November 23rd 2009

I would like to take some time to introduce a wonderful band that you probably haven’t heard of. Say hello to Sleep Whale. I would have never heard of them if it wasn’t for their label sending me their debut album. So a big thank you to Western Vinyl for giving me Sleep Whale!

Their debut album Houseboat is a delightful collection of songs that range from beautiful instrumentals with hints of ambience, to trippy psych folk. The band was started in 2006, formally under the name Mom in northern Texas. They have grown since then, releasing one hell of an album. Like I said, a lot of Houseboat is instrumental based. These are not just filler pieces to bridge a gap between songs like most albums. This is the meat of Sleep Whale’s sound. They base their songs around beautiful string arrangements that pave the way for everything else. When they do sing, the vocals are layered in a certain way that makes them hidden from clear listening, but it makes for sonic beauty.

This is a gripping album that gets better after spending more and more time with it. There are so many cool instruments and amazing sounds that add up to mesmerizing atmospheres and soundscapes. It would be pretty tough to absorb it all from one listen. Sleep Whale and their debut album Houseboat are one of the bigger indie surprises of the year!! If you are a fan of Sigur Ros, I would totally recommend checking Sleep Whale out. Give them a year or so, and I can see these guys blowing up.

The label told me to post these two vocal tracks. I hope you enjoy!

Lykke Li – Will You Love Me Tomorrow (The Shirelles Cover)

By Will, November 22nd 2009 — with 5 comments

It’s a lazy sunday and I am just trying to get through the next few days to get home for thanksgiving break. I need it!

I didn’t feel like doing any intense blogging today, so I found this cover from Pigeons and Planes today and really thought it was worth a post. This is my 2nd post focusing on covers, sorry about my lack of creativity this weekend!

Lykke Li does the song justice with her haunting/beautiful rendition. This version is live, and I don’t think it could be done any better. The raw passion of this version makes it. You gotta love Lykke Li after hearing this:

Here is the original. What a timeless classic!

Arcade Fire – Maps (Yeah Yeah Yeahs Cover)

By Will, November 21st 2009 — with 3 comments

Maps is one of the finest songs of this decade. It is as close to perfect as they come! I can put it on at anytime and just let the music take over.

You can’t help but be interested when a band like Arcade Fire take the song into their own hands and give it their own interpretation. The song’s atmosphere is still there, but it has enough of the Arcade Fire’s strings and influences to make it their own. Win Butler and Régine Chassagne’s vocals are well suited for this song.

This cover isn’t new or anything, but I have rediscovered it, and wanted to share it with you guys! Me and my friends were really set on renting out this house for the next 2 years of college, but it isn’t going to work out. The house is pretty nice, but the area is complete shit. Some places downtown here are really shitty, and we just happened to look at a house in the heart of it.

Today was stressful and this song helped put my mind at ease. The search will continue!

[New/Live] The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Say No To Love

By Will, November 20th 2009 — with 1 comment

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart have been one of the coolest things to come out of 2009. I had no expectations from their self titled record when it came out earlier this year, but it turned out to be a great pop rock record that may be up there in my favorite albums of 2009.

The wonderful NYC Taper recorded their set at the Bell House from November 15th. This includes a recording of a brand new song called “Say No To Love”. It isn’t anything different from The Pains output so far, but that’s fine with me as long as they keep sounding so great.

I can just blast this in my room no matter what kind of mood that I’m in. It just has a natural appealing nature that puts a smile on your face every time you listen to it. Now that’s what I call music!

An Interview With Local Natives

By Will, November 20th 2009 — with 6 comments

Having my blog has introduced me to tons of bands. Sometimes if I am lucky enough, I have been able to become friends with members of bands. It is like a dream come true to chat it out with real artists!! One band that I have stayed in close contact with is Local Natives. I have been addicted to their beautiful tunes every since I received my first email about them. It’s all history since then!

I couldn’t just be there friend though; it was time to do some professional blogging! Matt Frazier, the drummer of Local Natives took some time out of his day (right before soundcheck!) to answer some of my questions! I am not really a phone person, so I try to avoid it whenever I can. We both logged onto gmail, and started shooting the shit. I logged the whole chat below. I think it was more of a conversation with interview questions, which is a pretty cool dynamic if you ask me!

Matt:  Hey Will!

Will (me):  Hey Matt! Sorry that I’m a little late. My dorm internet sucks right now!

M:  No worries man. I literally just jumped on! The venue was having internet issues, so I ran down the street, hah!

W:  Nice, Nice. Where are you guys playing tonight?

M:  The Black Cat in DC

W: So how is everything going right now? Your currently touring with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, how has that been going?

M:  Amazing thus far. Tonight will be our 4th night with Sharpe and the zeros. Fool’s Gold just joined us last night in Philadelphia. We’re super excited to have them with us. We actually went to Athens for the first time last week, it’s an amazing city, I was pleasantly surprised.

W: That’s really cool, have the crowds been good to you so far out there?

M:  Indeed. They’ve been really welcoming!!

W:  That’s good to hear. A lot of crowds always talk over the opening act. It really bugs me! I’m glad to hear that you guys have been getting a good reception!

M:  Yeah, that’s one of my biggest pet peeves. Especially when I’m sitting and watching a show from the crowd….probably just because I know what it’s like from the other end.

W:  I mean you guys can’t help but notice it. It must be tough to ignore it, but you got to keep pushing through I guess.

M:  I mean, especially when you’re opening for a bigger band, you’ve got to expect it. Most people don’t know who we are. So, yes, you just kind of shut it out and continue to play to the best of your ability and hope that you’ll catch the attention of some of those talkers.

W:  Greatly said! How did you guys come together as a band? Give me a little bit of your back-story. Your name used to be Cavil At Rest right? Why did you end up changing it?

M:  The five of us have been playing together for almost four years now, but as you said, under another name. Ryan, Kelcey and Taylor have been playing/singing together since early high school. Andy and I (after dabbling in our own individual musical endeavors) came into the picture later via mutual friends. We had bounced around the idea of changing our name for some time, but it really reached the forefront of our priorities during the recording process of Gorilla Manor. We realized that not only the music, but us as people, had evolved into something we weren’t before… We had finally fallen into our groove as this collective band.

W: Very cool. This is a perfect lead in to my next question. Talk to me about Gorilla Manor, what was the recording process like. (The record is fantastic, I am listening to it now, as we speak!)

M:  Thanks! Well, Gorilla Manor has been somewhat of a work in progress for the past two years. Shoot, some of those songs (ie: Sun Hands) we wrote almost 3 years ago! We actually recorded a large majority of the album last summer with a guy name Raymond Richards in Los Angeles. By the end of 2008 we thought we held a finished record in our hands. After playing some of the songs live… things changed, which opened up new ideas and doors for select songs. We revisited those songs in the studio earlier this year and came out with alternate versions that actually ended up replacing the originals. Then in August of this year, after having spent more time writing on the road and whatnot… 3 brand new songs we added to the album.

W: Did any particular bands influence you? The Talking Heads maybe haha?

M: Talking Heads of course. Andy had actually been listening to More Songs About Buildings and Food quite a bit around that time, which heavily inspired us to cover Warning Sign. I think part of what makes our sound is the collaborative nature of this band. You’ve got five individually creative minds pulling inspiration from 5 different directions. Besides Talking Heads, bands like Broken Social Scene, CSNY, The Zombies or even Fugazi have inspired us in one way or another.

W:  All very good choices, doesn’t surprise me at all! Your debut album Gorilla Manor leaked early, what are your thoughts on that?

M:  In all honesty, I’m excited. We’ve been working on this “thing” for so long now. It’s just nice to finally have it available for everyone to hear. I’m flattered that people are willing to take the time and post and download these leaked links.

W:  I mean, CD sales are practically non-existent now. If people are posting the album and getting excited, it is a good sign! I mean touring is where you guys bring in the dough anyways right?

M:  Exactly! It’s a great sign. If people are hearing the music and getting excited about it, it’ll lead them to support us in other ways.

W:  What is your defining moment as a band. (Your “Tiny Dancer” Almost Famous moment). What I mean is, what memory will you always look back on as a member of Local Natives?

M:  We were just in London last month and while we were there we stopped by our label’s office. To our pleasant surprise, they had numerous finished, pressed copies of Gorilla Manor… Artwork and all. We hadn’t seen them in person yet, and as cheesy as it sounds, I can’t really describe the feeling of accomplishment I felt right then. It was just so exciting to hold this final product that we had all put so much time and effort into.

W:  That must be a great feeling!!! That’s really cool!

M:  At the same time, it was also a bit intimidating. Knowing that this thing was about to be thrown out into the world for everyone to see and hear and not really know how it would be received.

W:  That must really be intimidating. How much do you guys pay attention to the press?

M:  I can’t say that our curiosity doesn’t get the best of us sometimes and that we don’t read some of it, but I will say that I’ve learned to take it all with a grain of salt. We’re not for everyone, and I’m okay with that.

W:  Totally, you can’t get worked up about it. At least your don’t have a Liam Gallagher approach of world domination haha

M:  Haha. Indeed.

W: What has it been like touring? How’s the rock star life? Is being in a band like the stereotypes portray it?

M:  Sure, things get frustrating sometimes, but it’s really only natural. At this point, touring is still so new and fresh to us that we’re just excited everywhere we go. I feel like within our scene, the stereotypical rockstar image is somewhat of a thing of the past… and definitely I’d say that we’re the antithesis of that. We’re just a bunch of nerds sitting on our laptops in a bar. I’d definitely say that we’re the antithesis of that. We’re just a bunch of nerds sitting on our laptops in a bar.

W:  Sweet man, I just got a few short questions left. They are more on the fun side!

M:  Cool

W:  Favorite Beer?

M: Boddingtons. Although, after touring the UK, we’ve definitely grown to like cider.

W: What’s your favorite album of 2009 so far?

M:  I got to say, probably Grizzly Bear’s “Veckatimest”

W:  That’s one of mine as well. I’m probably biased when I go to pick Arctic Monkeys “Humbug”!

M:  Also great. I’ve also grown really fond of Foreign Born’s “Person To Person”

W: I have one last question for you, probably the toughest yet! Favorite song you guys have made?

M: That’s definitely a tough one because I’m really proud of everything we’ve done. If I had to choose one, Wide Eyes is definitely a recent favorite of mine.

W: Thanks so much for your time Matt!

M: Thanks again for the interview. It was a pleasure chatting with you man. Hope all is well. Talk soon!

That is it folks! I hope you enjoyed reading that, I really had a great time interviewing Matt! If you haven’t heard their debut album Gorilla Manor you can purchase it here. Sadly, it is a UK release only. We are still waiting to see where the band lands. In the meantime enjoy two songs below. One is their critically acclaimed song “Airplanes”, and the other is “Wide Eyes” the personal favorite of their drummer Matt! Although I have yet to see the band live (they always play when I’m away at school!), I highly reccomend seeing them live. I have only heard great things about their live performances, and I have complete confidence that they kill it live!

Blakroc – On The Vista (Feat. Mos Def)

By Will, November 19th 2009

I am surprised at myself. I don’t know why I didn’t mention the Blakroc project before this post. I got to stop being so lazy!!!

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the project, now is a good time to get educated. Blakroc is the collaboration project of The Black Keys with a variety of rappers. The rappers include somke A-listers such as Ludacris, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Mos Def, Raekwon, and RZA. The Black Keys tone down the dirty garage rock and play more soulful tunes that allow the rappers to feel the soul in their bones and spit out some rhymes.

I have one of the Mos Def featured songs “On The Vista” posted below for you guys to test out. There is something about Mos Def’s delivery that makes this song feel right. The Black Keys are a great, great, band who are able to craft the perfect soul for Mos Def to take control. Everything here sounds smooth and crisp, but at the same time very raw and dirty. I can dig that!

The whole self titled album is really solid overall. It is collaboration done right if you ask me. Blakroc stomps all over “collaborations” like the Linkin Park’s collaboration with Jay-Z, otherwise known as Collision Course. The self titled album is due 11/27, and you can pre-order it right here.

[Video] Vampire Weekend – Cousins

By Will, November 19th 2009 — with 2 comments

Check out Vampire Weekend’s official video for new single “Cousins” below. Like all of their video’s/music it is a ton of fun. The band gets iterative with us getting pulled back and forth on a pully playing along to the song.

It is simple, but effective. Very funny too!!! I really enjoyed watching this video!

Contra Japanese Bonus Tracks

By Will, November 18th 2009 — with 3 comments

Why do the Japenese always get the exclusive Bonus Tracks for every album? Vampire Weekend’s Contra will get two tracks. They are Giants (or Little Giant?), and Ottoman. We all recognized Ottoman from the film Nick & Norah’s Intimate Playlist. Now it is going to be attatced to Contra as a Japanese exclusive.\\

Watch Giant (or Little Giant) below:

This is cool, I have been waiting to see Little Giant released officially for a long, long time! They played it at their ’08 Bowery Ballroom show, and I have been looking for a recorded version ever since. Sweet deal!

You can see the Japanese CD listing right here .

It’s Hump Day

By Will, November 18th 2009 — with 15 comments

It’s Wednesday. Hence, the “it’s hump day” caption! For those of you that are unfamiliar with the phrase it just means we are getting over the middle of the week, and are halfway to it being over.

This week has not been a great one. College is basically being a royal pain in the ass right now. My classes right now are pretty dull, and I had a hard time getting anything good for next year. I feel like with my current selection of courses, I am just going through the motions. Like a mindless troll just going to college so I have a degree. I don’t feel like anything I am doing is helping me out. Something just doesn’t feel right.

Aside from the fact that I am in a rut with the academic stuff, I am hating the social life here. I got a good group of friends and all that, but there is nothing to do at this college! Downtown is an economically depressed dump that has nothing but decent eateries and bars. At nighttime, lets just say you wouldn’t want to be caught downtown. I am 3 hours away from NYC, so my concert going has also been stripped from me. It’s safe to say that I am not cool with seeing absolutely no shows!!!! Basically here you either drink, or sit in your dorm. There is not much to do here, and it sucks.

I also hate my living conditions right now. I did get a brand new building which I thought would be cool. Well, it hasn’t. The little accommodations for the new building have pretty much all failed. I got over that quick enough, whatever. However, dealing with the people here is not something that I can deal with. It’s all fraternity brothers and sorority sisters  (This isn’t speaking against any of you that are in frats/sororities) In my college/dorm they are basically douchebags who are re-living their high school glory. The sorority girls are basically girls who belong in the OC or Miami but are stuck in upstate NY. If you are not a frat brother, they literally ignore you. Who the fuck wants to live with these people?

You could say my friends and I are a bit disheartened by this. When I thought about getting a nice new building, I guess I didn’t think about what would be living in it lol! I lived in the older version of this building last year and loved it. I had a hall full of great dudes who made college great. This year it’s all abercrombie & fitch, backwards fitted caps, ugg boots, and black northfaces. It’s not just in my dorm either, people just seem lame here. I always had hopes that college people would be cooler, but I guess up here that doesn’t apply! It isn’t just me either, I have come across at least 20-30 people who all feel the same way as me.

I should be moving off campus next year, which should be exciting…if I am still here. I am contimplating the idea of transferring as a junior. I am going into this idea blindly at the moment though, so don’t take my word on that one. I am going to discuss this idea more with my parents when I go home for Turkey Day.

I am hoping to push through the rest of this pretty lame semester, and just get home for the time being. Here are some songs I have been chilling with as of late:

[mp3] : Vampire Weekend – The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance (Miike Snow Remix)

[mp3] : Devendra Banhart – Baby

[mp3] : Kanye West – Wouldn’t You Like To Ride

[mp3] : Florence + The Machine – You’ve Got The Love (XX remix)
