I shouldn’t be surprised at how utterly embarrassing the 2009 Grammy Nominees are, but my god. I mean the best record/album/song categories are pretty pathetic as usual but this year seems to be the worst in recent memory.The usual Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Black Eyed Peas got their nominations..no surprise there. Kings Of Leon got a few nominations in big categories, so good for them. It’s weird to see them so popular now, but they were aiming for this for years!
MGMT, The Ting Tings, and Silversun Pickups got nominations for Best New Artists. Silversun Pickups have been around since 2005, are you serious grammy nation? MGMT got a nomination for best pop performance by a duo or group with vocals which is well deserved. Phoenix, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Death Cab got best alternative album nominations which is cool too.
The Grammy’s need to pull their heads out of their ass and get relevent. I know most of you are going to say “Well Will, the Grammy’s have never been relevant, no award show is. That is not entirely true. The Academy Awards don’t nominate garbage like Twilight or Transformers 2. They pick good films, many which are indie films that get popular because of the nomination. Films like Slumdog Millionaire, Crash, The Wrestler, Little Miss Sunshine, were not blockbusters. They were all quality films that got popular because of quality. The Oscar’s do have it right in that sense.
The Grammy staffers should take note. Until then, they will continue to be a joke to the music fans that really matter. The ones who still support little indie record shops, who go to shows, who are keeping music alive through the internet. These people are not listening to Taylor Swift, Nickelback, or most of anything on the top 40. Until they catch up, no one is going to care about the Grammys!!

The part that needs the most vehement fucking is the “Best Rock Album” or whatever category, the one where only old-timers can get in. Green Day, U2, Dave Matthews, AC/DC. All dinosaurs putting out disappointing albums after whole careers full of successful albums snubbed for awards in their own day. A travesty.
If they’re gonna give it to a dinosaur, give it to Dinosaur Jr.! Those guys put out a pretty damn sharp album this year. They’ve been indie heroes forever, they could use an award or two. Still, there’s no market for a TV awards show for those kind of songs.
At lest Middle Cyclone is up for… best contemporary folk album and best… packaging.
And Silversun Pickups for best new artist is an insult to the country’s collective intelligence. I’m a bit of a fan, so I like that they’re gonna be mentioned on TV, but “new?” Dear lord, these awards are in a world of their own.
Still, on the bright side, it’s time to start campaigning for the xx to win Best New Artist in 2012!

Plus in the end it doesn’t matter it’s not like I would actually pay for the Grammy CD.
And really with any mixed CD you are going to get songs you like and songs you hate its just how it goes.
