jj – Things Will Never Be The Same Again

By Will, December 28th 2009 — with 2 comments

Over the last few days I’ve been burning through tons of this years albums, desperately trying to make sure I give every album a fair chance. There is just so much music out there, it makes it next to impossible to listen to everything thoroughly when you try to listen to literally everything! I am listening to some of the albums that I missed over the year, hoping to discover a last minute gem. I think that I just have with jj’s, jj N° 2.

Initially I only obsessed over the albums well known song (within the blogosphere) “Ecstasy”, ignoring the rest of the album. I always told myself I’d get to the rest of the album, eventually hoping to uncover the “gem” that pitchfork and other music enthusiasts were raving about. However, things came up, and I never got around to it. It happens!!

It’s 5 AM, and my usual winter break insomnia has kicked in full force. I was watching Slumdog Millionaire (great film!) and for some reason, the song “Ecstasy” came to mind while viewing it. I saw the album and decided that enough is enough. It was time to listen to JJ N° 2. Right away I was pleased that I did.

The album opener “Things Will Never Be The Same Again” instantly grabbed me by the throat and didn’t let go. It is just an incredible song by all means. I am amazed at the sheer beauty of it. I have not been this floored by a song since “Cornerstone”. It gives me ten different feelings at once, all of which accumulate to pure joy. I could break down the song and tell you what I love but in this case I don’t want to. I just want you to listen to this song, and hit repeat just like I have been doing! The album as a whole is equally as great.

I have just discovered this song, but it is a sure lock for my top songs of 2009. I regret getting into this album literally at the last minute, but better late than never right?!

just incase you are still new to jj, here is ecstasy (and i may sound familiar!) :

Sigur Ros : Gobbledigook Remixes

By Will, December 27th 2009

I was browsing some websites and forums last night, and I came across some new, and certainly different Sigur Ros. They are remix’s of Gobbledigook, the first single of their last album Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust.

The first remix is the Gobbledigook (Gluteus Maximus Mix). It strips the vocals and make them bare, allowing them to sound sad and lonely. This is a lot different from the upbeat tribal way that they are used in the original version. It then transforms into a trippy dance craze thanks to the house beat and dark sound effects. The song is literally transformed into an entirely new being. The second remix is the Gobbledigook (Flowing Remix Raw & Bare). The remix  sounds like it should be credited to Animal Collective. Sporatic beats, heavy bass, and disjointed usage of the vocals.

I think house/big beat fans will appreciate this more so than the hardcore fans of Sigor Ros. I recommend listening to this as you are lounging around, trying to get through your Sunday.

Merry Christmas!

By Will, December 25th 2009 — with 8 comments

Merry Christmas everyone! Today’s the big day! The holiday that we wait all year long for. Am I the only one who isn’t feeling Christmas spirit at all this year?

I know that as you get older, your feelings on Christmas change, but honestly it is really lacking something this year! It is really sad to think about!!! I miss the old Chrismas’s where you tried to fall asleep early, hoping that Santa brought all of your gifts. Life was simpler when we still believed in Santa. Christmas was a lot more colorful back then!

I guess for personal reasons, my Christmas’s are always missing something, or aren’t “traditional” for me, but I am trying to make the best of it. I am going to my step aunt and uncles house today for dinner, hopefully followed by a screening of Sherlock Holmes with my friends. We are trying to make it a tradition to see a movie on Christmas after seeing the excellent Benjamin Button last Christmas!

I hope you guys have a great christmas! Enjoy your gifts, food, and warm company of each other. Be safe if it is snowing, or if you are boozing! This is my 2nd Christmas with you guys, lets hope we continue to do this for many more!

I got a small little gift in the form on music for ya’ll! Enjoy the abundance of christmas songs below! They are mostly modern/indie covers of Christmas classics. I hope you enjoy!

Old Layout Vs. New Layout

By Will, December 24th 2009 — with 8 comments

Which one do you like better? The old plain white layout, or the new cleaner layout?

I want to see what you guys think, so please vote at this poll I made here:

VOTE

Or just leave a comment!

EDIT: 12/25 :

I brought back the old, classic, layout. The blue header is back. I missed this version, and I think most of you guys will enjoy this one a lot more. It looks better, and has the clean white feel that you are all used to!

Thanks so much for the feedback guys!

Chrismas Eve!

By Will, December 24th 2009 — with 3 comments

Today is Christmas eve, wow…Where the hell did the year go?  It hardly feels like Christmas, let alone the end of 2009. Things will be getting busy for me over the next week or so, so forgive me if I am not posting as frequently from now until new years. I am going to try and work on my top songs/albums of the year, as well as a decade thing. So keep on the prowl!

For now, enjoy some songs from the newly leaked Broken Bells album, as well as a new Lupe Fiasco song. Having these to listen to, along with a promo copy of a very highly anticipated album (I am not allowed to tell what it is though!) are making this a pretty solid Christmas!

[mp3] : Lupe Fiasco – I’m Beaming

- From Lupe’s eventual new record Lasers. Lupe hits it pretty solid with “I’m Beaming”, and reminds me why he is one of the only rappers I can constantly rely on. I hope he can blow us away some more in 2010!

[mp3] : Broken Bells – October

- I gave the a listen to the debut album of the James Mercer/Danger Mouse project known as Broken Bells, and it is quite good! “October” stood out from the rest of the album pretty instantly. The song takes about one minute to kick in, but it does in full force. With James’ crisp, clean vocals, a driving bassline, and jangly guitars, this song made my ears smile! Danger Mouse produced this song to regions of gold! It may not be October, but we can still find many ways to enjoy this song in the cold!

Where We Are

By Will, December 23rd 2009 — with 2 comments

I went to visit my brother and sister at school today during their Christmas parties. My brother actually has the same teacher that I had when I was a 4th grader. It was weird being back in the very same classroom that I spent a year of my childhood in. Everything seemed so much smaller, and less shiny. Something about being in an elementary school looking at all the parents spending time with their kids just hit me. I was sitting in those seats about 9-10 years ago, and I may have my own kids in a similar time frame (hopefully much, much, later!). My point is that life is going by pretty fast, and I guess i don’t know where I stand anymore. I just felt lost in translation, really thinking about where I am headed. Some part of me knows, another part of me is just as lost as the rest of you.

It’s funny how a simple trip to your old school can bring weird realizations and thoughts. Here are some songs I need to share with you. So take them:

[mp3] : Family Portrait – Mega Secrets

[mp3] : Family Portrait – On The Floor

Family Portrait are a really cool band that will melt your mind. Or your speakers. They sound like they are melting under water. Check out the killer melody featured in “On The Floor”. Really good. These guys need to get singed to a big label ASAP. Get to know them more @ their myspace!

[mp3] : Sia – Breathe Me

Not a new song by any means, but “Breathe Me” is just too damn beautiful for words. Breath-taking!

[mp3] : CANT – Ghosts

I don’t know why I took so long to get this one posted. CANT is Grizzly Bear’s bassist, Chris Taylors solo project. He released the song “Ghosts” as his first single on his record Terrible Records! The song sounds like a mix of Department of Eagles, with any of Chris’s hazy vocal performances on Grizzly Bear’s songs. You can buy the 7″ vinyl that the song is on from Terrible Records right now. Hurry, there are still a very limited amount left!

Sam Cooke – A Change Is Gonna Come

By Will, December 23rd 2009 — with 3 comments

You may be scratching your head at this one. It is probably because of one of two reasons. Your either an avid music listener who knows the history behind this classic and are wondering why I am posting this, or because your a young kid who doesn’t have a fucking clue who Sam Cooke is. Well, either way, I appreciate Sam Cooke and his beautiful timeless song “A Change Is Gonna Come”.

It is one of the most important songs ever recorded simply because of its strong message! It was Sam’s way of venting about the civil right movement.  Many music critics will agree that this is one of the best songs of all time. This song is literally perfect. From the lyrics, to the orchestration, to Sam’s troubled vocals, you have to hate music to dislike such a masterpiece. They really don’t make them like this anymore, do they? It’s sad to read that the song was released posthumous, after his unfortunate death (killed, ruled a justifiable homicide), but the song has carried him to us today even in 2009!

I have just recently really come to appreciate Sam Cooke’s work, and I am really glad that I discovered him. I hope this does something for you too!

New Theme : Thoughts From YOU

By Will, December 23rd 2009 — with 14 comments

Hey guys,

I got a new theme for my blog up finally, and I need to know what you guys think! What do you like, and what do you dislike? I researched many themes, and I thought this one was pretty rad!

Does the we all want someone / to shout for breakdown bother you, are the colors still too bland?

I thought it came out pretty clean and simple, yet really nice! I hope you feel the same. It isn’t finalized, it may change a little – or completely. I will see how it goes over the next few days!

If you guys don’t like it, I will look some more!

Post a comment below, or send me an email at weallwantsomeone@gmail.com with your thoughts! Please be honest and cruel. It only helps me!

Thanks guys!!!!!

Radiohead(ed) back to the studio!

By Will, December 22nd 2009 — with 2 comments

Ed O’Brien recently updated Dead Air Space with a post, where he ranted a bit about various things, basically leading into a end of the year round up. He then gave us some juicy details about Radiohead working on their new album! They are apparently headed back into the studio to continue working on their followup to In Rainbows.

Here is an excerpt of what Ed had to say:

The vibe in the camp is fantastic at present, and we head off into the studio in January to continue on from the work we started last Summer .. I am so genuinely excited about what we’re doing, but for obvious reasons I can’t divulge anything more.. anyway we all love surprises don’t we? 10 years ago we were all collectively (that’s the band) in the land of Kid A .. and although hugely proud of that record, it wasn’t a fun place to be .. What’s reassuring now, is that we are most definitely a different band, which should therefore mean that the music is different too and that is the aim of the game….keep it moving.

New Radiohead in 2010 = A great 2010

Read the entire post over at dead air space. He also lists 10 great films to watch over xmas!

The Flaming Lips – Money (Pink Floyd Cover)

By Will, December 22nd 2009 — with 7 comments

The Flaming Lips are one of the most creative bands of our generation, so it doesn’t surprise me that they would have the balls to cover Pink Floyd’s classic album, Dark Side of the Moon. The band recruited Peaches and Henry Rollins for some featured guest vocal help, and released it digitally today!

I want to share with you their cover of “Money”. The Flaming Lips are able to make the song even weirder with voice effects that give the song a robotic futuristic feeling. Henry Rollins adds some guest vocals to it!

I think fans of Pink Floyd will appreciate the cover, because The Flaming Lips are talented enough to figure out how to cater to them. The entire Dark Side Of The Moon Cover album is released today, exclusively to itunes! Purchase it right here!
