OH, and I forgot to mention how horrible “California English” is. Just terrible. The chorus isn’t too bad, but the verses are terrible with the autotune. By no means do I ‘hate’ autotune (as I thoroughly enjoy West’s 808s and Heartbreak), but this use of autotune is one of the worst I’ve ever heard.

“Diplomat’s Son” and “I think You’re a Contra” are the best on the album. Lyrically, the album is disappointing. Musically, I find it interesting in moments. Overall, it isn’t great, but it has its moments.

I agree with everything you say! I definitely think the their debut is much better than Contra but I like the fact that VW is experimenting, or “maturing” as you put it. I love the electronic influences–I guess a certain VW member’s work on Discovery had something to do with it! “Diplomat’s Son” is my favorite as well, along with” Giving Up the Gun”, and “I think Ur a Contra” took awhile for me to like as well.

No doubt, Cousins is a hell of a track. It is just a ball of fire! I can’t get enough of Baio’s bassline! It’s so raw! The song is great, don’t get me wrong! It’s just I feel that songs like “Diplomat’s Son”, “California English”, and “I Think Ur A Contra” have more to offer and will grow over time! Sorta like wine!

I just really like Cousins. Don’t get me wrong, I dig the rest of the album, and my RA just told me to turn it down, but for some reason the composition of Cousins just gets me going. I think each week a new song from this album will be my favorite. It’s exactly how I felt about Broken Bell’s album when I first heard it.

@Alex – Horchata & Cousins are excellent tracks, but they are probably some of my least favorite on the album at the moment! That should saw something about how great I feel that the other songs are!

@Craig – That would be no fun now would it! I’ll leave that for the bigger publications who love to hate.

With that said, I am really interested to see how Pitchfork rates this. It could go either way!

Great review! Cant wait for the album aswell. – Im loving Diplomats Son aswell from listening on myspace. Good to see a reviewer not looking for the negative angle for once!
