Vampire Weekend – Ruby Soho (Rancid Cover)

By Will, February 8th 2010 — with 2 comments

Last week Vampire Weekend stopped by BBC’s studio’s to record a live session for Zane Lowe. Usually band’s are allowed to pick a song to cover, and Vampire Weekend choose Rancid’s “Ruby Soho”. If you had to predict what Vampire Weekend would cover, Rancid would be pretty far from my guesses!

Abeano was all over this cover and posted for all of our pleasure! So a big thanks to you Abeano!!!!

Band To Watch: A Shoreline Dream

By Will, February 8th 2010 — with 1 comment

A Shoreline Dream are a band from Denver who do everything themselves. They have earned everything that they have, which includes a very strong cult following by local fans. They recieved a lot of attention for their song “Hypermode”, leading to them playing SXSW this year. This will give the band a chance to show off their tools to all the right people. They have a new EP set to be released in May, with a new album expected to follow later in 2010. Things are just getting started for A Shoreline Dream. They are going to be a band to watch for sure. Don’t expect this to be the only post about them on We All Want Someone.

Posted below is their standout track “Hypermode” which came off their 2009 album, Recollections of Memory.

Band To Watch: The Federals

By Will, February 8th 2010 — with 6 comments

I have not experienced the feelings of truly being wowed by a band for a while. It’s nearly 5 AM but I have not gone to bed because I have spent the last hour digging up all the information that I can on The Federals. They are one of the best young bands that I have heard so far this year, and I am blown away. I noticed them thanks to Tim from The Blue Walrus. They are the British band that the NME should be pushing. These guys are miles better than most of the rubbish that publication seems to be pushing these days anyway.

The band hails from York and met while attending York’s Millthorpe Secondary School not too many years ago. They shared a love for bands like The Stooges, The White Stripes, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Then, The Federals were born. They have released two EP’s so far, and are working on their debut album for a hopeful release later this year.Their songs feature an assault of guitars, singing from a Jack White raspy blues voice, and tight drumming. I can only imagine a club featuring The Federals and how nuts the crowd would go for them, moshing, screaming, pushing, and shoving. These guys are really exciting to listen to. Something about them is genuine and fresh. They are making real garage rock and roll come to life. With so much bullshit indie music out there, it is really refreshing to see a band go back to the roots and just rock the fuck out.

They are giving away their latest EP, Transistor, for free right here. All you gotta do is give them your email. Trust me, it is worth it. All three songs are strong garage stompers with an attitude. If you like garage rock done right, you can’t go wrong with this EP. “Transistor 1969″ is the standout song, with plenty of attitude “Automatic Breakdown” is a tight song with slick riffs from every guitar and bass. Throw in some harmonica and you got a winner. “What’s Goin’ Around” reminded me of The Hives, which is a pretty good compliment!

I am completely sold on The Federals. They are one of my new favorite bands right now. I hope they get the attention of the big boys, because they certainly deserve it. I posted the 3 songs from their EP below, because I couldn’t pick just one:

New We Are Scientists Songs

By Will, February 8th 2010 — with 1 comment

Noticed the We Are Scientists played some new songs at their gig at Maxwell’s in NJ. Dug up some videos on-line and posted them below. I actually was the one who recorded “I Don’t Bite” from All Points West! These songs are probably going to be on their new album which is supposedly due sometime this spring.

An Interview with: Best Coast

By Will, February 7th 2010 — with 2 comments

Best Coast are one of the true lo-fi groups that I truly believe in. They have a real geniune sound. Best Coast is really the moniker of Beth Cosentino. She has released a few singles as Best Coast, receiving a lot of praise from the likes of Pitchfork, and music blogs all over the map. They are getting set to release their debut album this year, and you can read more about them in our post here. Beth gave us a minute of her time to give us a pretty laid back interview. You can tell that Beth is a down to earth chick who is very easy going and fun to be around. I tried to keep it as real as I could, and she did the same. Check it out below:

Will: Tell me a little bit about the history of Best Coast,. How did it all come together?

Beth: I moved home to los angeles after living in new york for about a year. I pretty much just started writing songs as soon as I got home. I asked my friend bobb if he would help me record the stuff, and if he wanted to play with me, and he said yes, and almost a year later, here we are !

Will:  You are known for your California sound. Tell me about some of your influences, and how you pieced together your sound!

Beth: I’m really inspired by the beach boys, all the phil spector groups, and stuff like 50’s doo-wop—the platters, the flamingos, etc. I’m also really into stuff like the ramones, and the kinks—and sort of that “lazy” rock n roll sound, so I guess in a way I thought I would somehow try to combine those two sounds. Make some kind of pretty sounding, warm, yet grungy, and sometimes heavy music. Does that even make sense? Haha…

Will: I read that your dissatisfaction in NYC helped you get to where you are right now? I am a native New Yorker so I am a bit offended! Care to explain?  :-p

Beth: New York just wasn’t the right place for me. I think some people are cut out for it, and others aren’t. I am way too lazy and chilled out to live in new york. Too much effort, hahaha. Plus, I couldn’t stand the weather. The cold made me so depressed. I think I’m just better suited to live in a place where the sun shines 80% of the year.

Will : You released a lot of singles! Can you tell us a little bit about them?

Beth: The first one we did was on art fag. My friend Mario runs the label and he asked if I’d be down to do a 7”, so I just gave him 3 songs that bobb and I had recorded. That is the one that has “sun was high (so was i)” on it—that’s actually the first time I ever wrote/recorded as best coast. the second one we did was on a label based out of NY called group tightener. Again, just gave them some songs we’d already recorded. The most recent one we did was the black iris 7”. For this one we actually went into a studio (black iris studios, in LA) and recorded an a and a b side—which turned out to be “when I’m with you” and “this is real”—we added live drums and experimented with production and stuff, and it was really fun. It’s pretty different than the other 7”s, which I think is fitting, because it’s a lot closer to the way the album will sound than the early stuff was.

Will:  Your sound is very lo-fi, what are your thoughts about lo-fi and its takeover of the indie scene?

Beth: Personally I don’t really understand where the resurgence came from, but I’m glad its around.

Will : Do you think you will ever abandon the lo-fi production/sound and move to a cleaner sound?

Beth: I think that our record is proably going to be a lot less lo-fi—but that doesn’t mean it won’t still have stuff like reverb and distortion and fuzz and what not..i think it’s just going to sound a little more procuded and a little bit less “I recorded this in my bedroom”

Will:  What has it been like touring as Best Coast?

Beth: Well we haven’t officially toured yet, but we head out for our west coast tour with Vivian girls in 2 weeks, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Will : Whats your “Almost Famous” moment. If you’ve never seen the movie (watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Qn3tel9FWU ), What is that one “defining” moment that you will always remember during your time as Best Coast?

Beth: Probably when I was asked to be in nylon magazine as part of a feature of up and coming female musicians. I was kind of like “wait what, really???” it was pretty exciting, and my parents were really stoked too, which made me even happier.

Will : What does the future hold for Best Coast? When is your debut album coming out! Will you re-use any songs from the 7 inch singles, or will it be all new stuff?

Beth: The album will be out at some time this year, hopefully in the fall. It’s all new recordings! I’m both nervous and excited about it, but mostly I’m excited.

Will: Favorite Beer?

Beth : Well I’m allergic to gluten so I don’t drink beer, but when I did drink beer I was really into Budweiser, plain and simple man.

Will:  Favorite Album Of 2009?

Beth: Phoenix- Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

Will: Favorite Album Of The Decade?

Beth: Ghostface Killah- Fishscale

Will: Job you would have if you weren’t in a band?

Beth: chef or journalist or maybe a cat trainer.

There you have it guys! Thanks a lot to Beth for taking the time out of her busy schedule and answer some of my questions!!

Check out Beth’s latest single “Up All Night” which came out on a split single with Jeans Wilder. She has another single coming out on February 9th that you can purchase from PPM here for her single Something In The Way. It features two new songs “”Wish He Was You” & “The Road”. MGMT – Congratulations : April 13th Release Date?

By Will, February 7th 2010 — with 3 comments

MGMT mentioned that their new album, “Congratulations” may end up being released in April at the Grammy’s. It seems like the band are confirming this with a April 13th release date. There is no official announcement, but the band has a countdown on their website, and it leads to April 13th, which is a Tuesday. Coincidence? Probably not! A moving image of the ocean heads the band’s page. Possible album cover as well? They sure do love their beach/water imagery!

On a seperate note, the band is playing at Coachella, as well as Bamboozle. For those of you in the metro area, you may actually want to consider Day 2 of Bamboozle. Bands that make it worth going? : MGMT, Weezer, Minus The Bear, Matt & Kim, Girl Talk, Fun. , Ok Go, Wale….. I am considering going because of these artists, and a lot of my friends are going. It looks like Bamboozle are figuring out that good indie rock will even out the crowds at the festival that is primarily known for it’s emo/teen rock bands.

Hot Chip – Highline Ballroom (NYC, Feb 5th)

By Will, February 6th 2010 — with 3 comments

Last night I went down to Highline Ballroom with three friends and saw the wonderful Hot Chip rock the venue for all the fans who waited for hours in the brutal cold for their free Myspace Secret Show. They played a full set with a healthy mix of songs from their latest album One Life Stand, along with fan favorites from The Warning and Made In The Dark. I have better photos to share with you but left my cord in my dorm. I will upload them and make a separate post on Monday.

Free Energy opened up the show, and blew me out of the water. I expected good things from them after all the good press that they have been receiving. Yet, they managed to be miles ahead of my expectations putting on a fantastic show. Their songs are guitar based and full of energy. Their sound is full of magnificent guitar playing and a general band tightness that is hard to find in such a young band. They were great with the crowd, bringing everyone to move their feet. Paul Sprangers, the bands lead singer, has a great voice that perfectly suites the bands throwback sound. He has a lot of energy that helps fuel a band that needs no help with firy guitars and a upbeat rhythm section. I have not been this impressed by an opening band in a long, long, time. Free Energy are indeed the real deal. My excitement for their debut album, Stuck On Nothing, has just gone through the roof. They are totally one to watch in 2010!!!

Hot Chip came out with the perfect opener with “Thieves In The Night”. The crowd had no problem signing and dancing to Hot Chip’s clean beats. I was impressed about how well the band incorporated both rock and dance elements to their live sets. Alexis Taylor has a great voice live, and brings plenty of funky dance moves to his songs. The band plays classic songs like “Boy From School” a little different than you are used to, but it all makes sense live. The obvious standout was “Ready for The Floor” and this was not surprising at all. The song came to live on its own live, and fueled the band to give an epic performance. Al Doyle, the bands guitarist (he’s also in LCD Soundsystem) said it was weird not ending the set with that. After that they went into their current single “One Life Stand” and hit that out of the park as well. Hot Chip didn’t slow down at all playing all of their dance songs, leaving no room for their slower “ballads”.

They came back for a 3 song encore that allowed them to play two more songs from the new album, one of which was “Slush” which is one of their slower songs on One Life Stand. However, it played perfectly fine as a transition to the epic finish that the band gave to one of my favorite Hot Chip songs “Hold On”.

The show was a lot of fun, and Hot Chip gave it their all. This was really nice of them considering the show was free. I had a lot of fun, and was impressed with Hot Chip’s skill at live performances. They are a very good band live, and I would totally pay to see them again!!!

Setlist: (photo of the actual set that I managed to snag, is also posted below – They actually played Hold On, but didn’t put it on the setlist. I forgot where it was exactly, but I think it was the 2nd to last song!)

And I Was A Boy From School
One Pure Thought

Ready For The Floor

[Video] Spoon – Written In Reverse

By Will, February 6th 2010

Spoon premired their music video on pitchfork yesterday, and I finally got around to watching it. It is a cool video, actually recorded the live take of the song, and used a big mirror to get a cool effect of the band playing. A really simple idea, done right.

Spoon just radiate cool. I cannot wait to see them live at Radio City!!! :

[new] Free Energy – Hope Child

By Will, February 5th 2010 — with 2 comments

Free Energy are one of my most anticipated new acts of 2010. Most people who have heard the new band would agree with me. Well soon enough, I will find out how good the band is live. I am going to see them open for Hot Chip at that free Myspace Secret Show @ Highline Ballroom tonight. So hopefully they bring it live!

DFA/Astralwerks is releasing Free Energy’s debut album Stuck On Nothing on Match 9th. The Philadelphia band had James Murphy, Mr. LCD Soundsystem himself, produce their album. One of the songs from the album is available for download now, called “Hope Child”. It is a smart rock song with a nice clean sound that gives me a 60′s-70′s feel. They sorta remind me of The Hold Steady with their big guitar riffs, and light keyboards in the background. These guys have their rock roots in check with plenty of soul and passion to go on the side. These guys are going to be huge soon, I can’t wait to hear the rest of their debut album, Stuck On Nothing!!
