[mp3] : Caribou – Odessa

By Will, February 24th 2010

Really been enjoying “Odessa”, the newest song from Caribou. It will be on Caribou’s new album Swim. “Odessa” is very heavy on the electronics, which is different for him, but it works really well. Dan Snaith has a really gentle, clear, organic voice that may remind some fans of The Whitest Boy Alive. Snaith smartly applies electronic sounds and effects to heighten the track to favorable levels.

The song radiates waves of chill. Swim comes out on April 20th on Merge Records. Listen to the mp3, & watch the mysterious music video, all below. If you like the song and want to pre-order the album you can pre-order it from insound on the always sexy Vinyl, or CD format.

[mp3]: Drink Up Buttercup – Sosey and Dosey

By Will, February 24th 2010 — with 2 comments

There is a much deserved “Band To Watch” post coming from me about Drink Up Buttercup. If you don’t know who Drink Up Buttercup are, you better get acquainted with them real fast. You are going to be seeing plenty of them on my blog. They are four men from Philadelphia who gained a strong following because of their reputation for great live shows. Like I said, I am going to do a “Band To Watch” feature on the band soon, so I won’t go too in depth about them just yet. (I like to keep you on your heels. Gotta leave ‘em coming back for more, right?) The band make music that captures you by the throat and fills your buddy with magnificent sounds that sound like no one else out there.

The band first gained attention of fans when they released a 7 inch of their first single “Sosey and Dosey”. I am not surprised that this song got the ball rolling for the band. The song fucking slays! It literally sounds like the band went to the circus and wrote a song to compliment the eccentric mood. The song starts with sinister vibe and falls into a wave of psychedelic vocals. In brief, “Sosey and Dosey” sounds like an acid trip gone terribly right. I love the unearthly electronic ending to the song, it sounds like something Animal Collective are responsible of. Brilliant!

Lets take a breather. Do you see how many different ways I was able to describe this song? Pretty amazing right? I’m telling you, do not sleep on Drink Up Buttercup! Their debut album Born And Thrown On A Hook is coming out on March 23rd.

[mp3] Kanye West – Coldest Winter (Music Video Version)

By Will, February 23rd 2010 — with 5 comments

The official music video for Kanye’s 808 standout “Coldest Winter” dropped today. Quite a while since the album dropped, eh? I hate to be the one to say it, but I couldn’t help think of the grim reaper in the video as Kanye, and Taylor Swift as the girl who was running away. VMA’s part 2?

The version of “Coldest Winter” used in the video is a lot different than the one on 808′s. It’s pretty much a darker remix of the song. Pretty creepy at some points! Video & mp3 below!

This came out of no where for me, and I’m loving it. Raaaaaaaandy and Dave Sitek are the new comedy rap duo of comedian/actor Aziz Ansari (Parks & Recreation) and Dave Sitek from TV On The Radio. They are set to release a mixtape together and gave us a taste of it today with “AAAAAAAANGRY” where Aziz just goes all out on pretty much every rapper. He is angry, and therefore no rapper is safe. I loved the Kid Cudi & DOOM bits. Fucking classic!

[new] She & Him – Thieves

By Will, February 23rd 2010 — with 2 comments

TodayShe & Him gave away another track off their new album, Volume 2. The song of choice was “Thieves”. It is another elegant gem that gracefully channels the pure feeling of 60′s music. Zooey’s vocals shine with depth and beauty as sings about crying over a love lost, alongside M. Ward’s focused strumming. I totally approve of this. This song is..well…gorgeous in pretty much every way!

Volume 2 should be an absolute delight. If you missed “In The Sun”. the other free song that they gave away, grab it here.

Sweet! Today The Hold Steady official announced that their new album is called Heaven Is Whenever. The album is the band’s fifth record, and it’s coming out on Vagrant Records on May 4th. Dean Baltulonis produced the album. He was also responsible for the bands first two albums. It’s the bands first album (since Almost Killed Me – their first album) without their keyboardist, Franz Nicolay (the dude with the badass mustache!). The band claims the record is less anthematic, and more complex/guitar heavy. Rock on!

The band has a new tour coming up. I am going to make a trip to Syracuse with some friends to catch the band when they play at Syracuse on 4/10 at the Westcott Theater. I am stationed in Bing right now for college, so that is the easiest way for me to see them! I posted the full tour dates below, along with the tracklisting for Heaven Is Whenever:

A delightful Croatian band : nipplepeople

By Will, February 23rd 2010 — with 7 comments

I got many promo emails that just bore me. Most of the stuff I get bores me. I got a “Walking On A Dream” remix yesterday morning and though to myself, great, another “Walking On A Dream” remix. I really didn’t want to bother, but I try to give everything at least a few minutes of listening time. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed the remix done by a mysterious band from Croatia called nipplepeople.

I emailed them back asking about them, and they were very shy about sharing their own original songs because the songs are in Croatian. They assumed it wouldn’t be interesting to American audiences. Well most close minded people would probably completely disregard the band right there. I however sensed something special about these guys. I went to their myspace and gave the 2 songs on their a listen. The songs are titled “Sutra” and “Broj”. I was completely blown away with how delightful “Sutra” was. There is nothing better than being caught completely off guard to find a treasure. That is exactly what happened yesterday when nipplepeople emailed me.

4 minutes of blissful electronic/dance music that is breathtakingly fresh. Sure you may not understand what they are saying but it doesn’t blur their ability to craft a beautiful melody through ethereal vocals and clean beats. There is just a really warm airy nature to her vocals that I can’t get enough of. The first 50 seconds of the song are pretty unbelievable. This is electronic music done right! “Broj” is not far behind it. It is a more restrained song, but still maintains a high level of quality. These guys are not amatuers to the game by any means, they sound like they have been doing this for years.

This may be one of the coolest finds of 2010, I am completely eating nipplepeople up!

Check out their myspace. They also have a blog which they say is more English friendly! Songs are posted for download below:

Band To Watch: Eternal Summers

By Will, February 22nd 2010 — with 5 comments

Eternal Summers are a band that I am very excited to share with you. There is plenty to love about these guys. I should have posted about them sooner, my dearest apologies to the band, and you. I have deprived you of their lovely tunes for far too long! The band is a male/female duo from Virginia who have grabbed my soul and run away with it. Far, far, away to a land that is drenched in reverb and sprinkled with pop-rock. Their emotions are expressed through affecting melodys and catching riffs. Lead singer Nicole has a warm voice that delights the ears and gives us all the goods via her guitar riffs.

There Eternal Summers EP is delightful listen, full of wonderful songs that have smart pop sensibilities that warmed my spirits. The songs are warm summer anthems that give way to the changing seasons. Songs are short and sweet, cramming all of their tight jams into quick fixes that really work well for the band. When listening to Eternal Summers, you don’t see them as just another reverb lo-fi band. Rather they use reverb and lo-fi qualities to convey a certain feeling, and the feeling makes me feel damn good.

They self released the Eternal Summers EP last January, and are giving it a proper release on March 13th via Chimney Sweep Records. They are also releasing a new 7″ EP on Meal Deal Records called Season. There is plenty of music from this band, and I assure you that everything that they offer is good. The band will be at SXSW, so hopefully the word will spread and they will get their due!
