[new] Kate Nash – I Just Love You More

By Will, February 11th 2010 — with 4 comments

Checked my twitter and saw an @ message from one of my cool followers who notified me that a new Kate Nash song was out there. She posted a new song “I Just Love You More” for free download on her website. The song took me completely by surprise, sounding nothing like Kate Nash did on her debut album Made Of Bricks. She pretty much did a complete 180 degree transformation from her old piano based sound. Gone is the cute, brutally honest, piano pop rock anthems that Kate Nash made us fall in love with back in 2008.

Nash channels her inner Karen O and gives us garage rock screams. Yes, screams!! Through in some moans as well. The song is led by a dirty guitar riff that ignites the song to a surprising level of rockness that I didn’t expect from Kate! Add in some epic strings, and you got one hell of a track. Kate has turned to rock and roll, and I couldn’t be happier with the result!

“I Just Love You More” came out of left field, and left me very pleasantly surprised. It is off of her upcoming second album, which is currently untitled. (However, Angry Ape reports that the working/tentative title is Crayon Full Of Colour & that she was influenced by punk & girl groups) It is set to come out on April 20th. You UK fans can pre-order the album at play. Kate Nash is running a pretty interesting contest at her site where fans can submit poems/stores/letters about there first time falling in love. Kate will select her favorite and include it within a book that comes with the limited edition of the album. Head to her site for more info!

Musicblogocide2k10 a.k.a. How google/blogger fucked up

By Will, February 11th 2010 — with 1 comment

If you have any interest in music blogs, than you know all about the google/blogger controversy. The free blog service Blogger, which is owned by a small upcoming company named Google recently deleted 6 blogs that were hosted on their blogger service. The blogs original blogs are gone, wiped off of the earth like they never existed. The blogs have moved to new links, and are starting over. The blogs including, It’s A Rap, Pop Tars Suck Toasted, I Rock Cleveland, Living Ears, To Die By Your Side and Maslacism. All of the blogs are currently started from scratch, salvaging some posts if they were lucky enough. maslacism was actually re-instated by blogger because they realized they made a mistake. Google’s project manager, Rick Klau even took the time to apologize to the blog.

The news media and other bloggers took notice, and had plenty to say. I compiled whatever I could find. If I forgot something, post it in the comment section or email me, and I’ll edit it in. I already gave you my thoughts on the issue at hand.

Outraged twitter users including bloggers, music fans, and regular people pulled together to create the # musicblogocide2k10

The Guardian did an article on the issue that seems to be spreading the word at a rapid rate. A very good read.

Pitchfork took notice on the absurd situation

Bill From I Rock Cleveland, one of the music blogs deleted posted his argument with the google support team. He still hasn’t received any help from them.

-Poptarts Suck Toasted posted some thoughts on his deletion/situation on his tumblr for the blog: http://poptarts.tumblr.com/post/382580784/theunderrated-stereoactivenyc-soupsoup

AOL’s The Boombbox took note. They actually included what I had to say, surprising enough..

La Weekely had a nice article last week about google/blogger deleting posts. I’d like to see a newly updated one on deletion of blogs.

Mashable & Examiner both wrote good articles.

The Music Slut shared some of his thoughts

Earsucker shared some thoughts

SongByToad did a wonderful piece on Owning Info and Terminating It

BreakingMoreWaves gave some level headed thinking about the discussion (and discussed the future of blogs, here)

Here was google’s reasoning for the deletion of the blogs as they posted on blogger buzz

Catslock gave us some of their thoughts on the issue

The Daily Swarm & Techdirt and even Cnet wrote about the issue

Band To Watch: Free Energy

By Will, February 11th 2010 — with 4 comments

If you have been paying attention to hot new bands that the internet is eating up, you probably are well aware of the hot band from Philadelphia called Free Energy. I have seen their name on plenty of bloggers “bands to watch in 2010″ lists. It wasn’t until I saw them open up for Hot Chip at Highline Ballroom last Friday that I finally jumped on the hype bandwagon. They are 100% worth every bit of the hype. Free Energy have the chops to present their guitar rock in a pretty exciting fashion live. Last week I posted a song from their debut album, Stuck On Nothing. It was my first taste of the band, and it set me off right. But seeing them live really jump started my excitement for this young band. I didn’t know any of the songs that they played live, but had no problem rocking my head back and forth and anticipating getting my hands on them later at home.

I found that the band released a EP titled after their very own band named and gave it a go. It turns out that two of the songs (Free Energy & Dark Trance) are going to be on their debut album. The only song that they left off, is actually their strongest song in my opinion. I have obsessively played “Something In Common” over and over for the last week, to the point where my roomate and neighbors are probably well aware of the lyrics, and ready to kill me! Just like Vampire Weekend’s notable omission of “Boston/Ladies Of Cambridge”, “Something In Common” is sadly not on the tracklisting for Stuck On Nothing. However, the song will do find standing out on its own, because it truly is that good.

The best way to describe Free Energy’s sound is to call them a modern take on classic rock. The band is composed of the now defunct band Hockey Night They have excellent 70′s guitar riffs that earned them rightful comparisons to the likes of Thin Lizzy, Tom Petty (who they claim to be an influence in this interview with P4k) and Cheap Trick. These guys are very much rock, but with a modern touch of pop/blues added quite flawlessly. Some people would even go as far to call Free Energy the revivalist of glam-rock. With such a great style and sound, it is safe to say that Free Energy’s appeal in not limited to any one type of “listener”. I think these guys have a very wide appeal, and that is why the famous electronic/dance label DFA took it upon themselves to snag the band.

The songs speak for themselves. You don’t really need to read up on the band to get to know them. These songs are inviting you to truly rock out with the band, and connect with them. Just like they used to when music truly mattered. Free Energy are making good fucking rock and roll that is true in fashion and spirit. Free Energy are the real deal, and I cannot wait to hear their debut album! It’s going to make Free Energy the “it” band of 2010.

Check out “Something In Common” from their Free Energy EP below, along with two tracks from Stuck On Nothing: ” I posted Hope Child last week. Grab that here. James Murphy (Mr. LCD Soundsytem), produced both the EP and album, so you know these guys are in very trustworthy hands.

New Strokes Album In…September?!

By Will, February 11th 2010 — with 1 comment

I don’t ask much from you lord, but please let Spin be telling the truth when they report that The Strokes are going to get their new album out by September. In an article that they posted yesterday, the magazine reported that the ultra cool Strokes drummer Fab Moretti claimed the album has a “tentative release date of September” during a convo with Radio One‘s Zane Lowe. Moretti said that “basic tracks are done… now we’re just running around like kids in a candy shop. He described the experience of coming back together once again as, “Coming back in and writing music was kind of like riding a bicycle.” The band is working hard recording the album at Avatar Studios in NYC with producer Joe Chiccarelli, and engineer Gus Oberg.

It is comforting for us to finally get real confirmation that things are falling back into place for our favorite NYC rockers. Now that they are shooting for a September release date, we can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that the 4th album is truly happening.

They are also getting ready for their festival appearance at the Isle Of Wright music festival in the UK. It’s their first performance in a long time, so they are gonna have to practice pretty hard to get the old songs down again. I hope the band misses us New Yorkers enough to come play at All Points West and give us the exclusive debut of those new songs. What do you say guys???

[Video] The Morning Benders – Excuses (With The Big Echo Orchestra)

By Will, February 11th 2010 — with 1 comment

How do you not love the Morning Benders? The San Francisco boys (now stationed in NYC!) are truly one of the best bands currently making pop rock tunes. The best part is that they are just getting started. Their new album Big Echo is bound to be one of 2010′s finest, and so far all the songs that we have heard from it (check out “Promises” right here) are fantastic. What’s not to love about the benders?

Yours Truly shot the band wonderful performance of Big Echo opening track “Excuses”. It was my first time ever hearing the song, and I am absolutely floored. It is pretty masterful! The band obviously realized the live potential of the song, and have been recently influenced by Phil Spector’s “Wall Of Sound” (see the note from the band, to Phil, posted below) The band got some of their musicians and friends from their San Francisco home, and formed the Big Echo Orchestra. They all came together to give the song a true “wall of sound”, and the result is pretty god damn good.

The Morning Benders and Big Echo Orchestra give a bloody brilliant performance of “Excuses”. This is not to be missed! I can tell you firsthand that the Benders do indeed rock it live, as I have seen them live before (opened for the kooks in 2008).

Watch the video below, and tell me what you think:

Buy Big Echo from Insound, looks like it will be worth it!

iamamiwhoami = Karin Dreijer Andersson/Fever Ray???

By Will, February 11th 2010 — with 13 comments

Last night I posted the photo that iamiamiwhoami left in my comment section. It was the first real clear shot that we had of her face. When I saw her latest video, I initially guessed that it was somehow related to The Knife. Looks like I may be right. But many people may still argue that it is someone else, and who knows, I may be wrong!

I compared the photo of iami to one of Karin Dreijer Andersson (which I found right here) who is one half of The Knife, also known as Fever Ray, and I noticed that they look a-like…sorta

Compare for yourself:

Her facial complexion looks pretty damn similar. The hair color is spot on, eye color, and even her lips seem identical. She has never really shown her face so it is tough to truly say its her, but I am definetly leaning towards her.  The music that we have heard in her videos isn’t too far of a stretch for The Knife/Fever Ray camp. Karen also likes to wear weird facial makeup, not too different from what we are getting in the videos. Things seem to be pointing towards Karin/The Knife.

Anyone agree with me? Or am I still way off??

Update, 2/11 12:03 PM : I seem to be off, and a few of you guys really believe that it is Little Boots. I don’t know if I am sold on that, but at this point I am ready to believe anything!

[Video] Yeasayer – Ambling Amp (Live, Fallon)

By Will, February 11th 2010 — with 2 comments

Yeasayer performed the excellent “Ambling Amp” live on Fallon last night. After watching the video, most fans of the song should be pleased with how well the song translates to the live setting.
