Listeners may experience some difficulty when trying to google search a band called Weekend. That’s alright because if people want to hear their music bad enough, they will find a way to find it. That is what happened to me when Mitzi from RADKAT asked me if I could find out some info on a San Francisco band called Weekend. It took me a while, but I eventually tracked the boys down. I gave them a listen, and I gotta thank Mitzi for bringing these guys to my attention because they are pretty damn good.

When they emailed me on gmail their username showed up as Ian Curtis. On their blog, they describe themselves as “The ferocity of punk, the drama of shoegaze, the ambition of Springsteen and the textures of noise”. These descriptions are not far from the truth.

The band has one official release under their belt, a single released on Mexican Summer featuring two songs: “All-American” and “Youth Haunts”. The band has received a lot of comparisons to the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Joy Division. These comparisons aren’t too far off when you listen to “All-American” and your mind melts as a result of the fuzzy guitars and moody vocals (Ian Curtis?). “Youth Haunts” sounds like the band was locked in a hot basement for weeks and took out their rage through dark shoegazey rock. “Coma Summer” is a perfect hazy slacker anthem that captures the mood of a lazy summer mindset perfectly. Picture yourself in a dark hot basement in the summer, sweating along to music that could alter your state of mind. That is the Weekend experience.

They band will start a small spring tour on March 9th which includes 3 days at SXSW. A summer tour will follow. The band is currently working on their debut album, Sports, set for release sometime over the summer. Perfect.
