The album features live renditions of 8 of the albums songs all available to download right from Phoenix’s site. If you are too lazy, download the ZIP file below:

Weird Korea

By Will, March 24th 2010 — with 2 comments

I love posting new music. Its pretty exciting to share new bands and new song with you guys. I have a real treat to share a young band out of SUNY Purchase college because my good buddy Nic is the drummer of the band.

They have been playing local shows in the Purchase area with bands such as Tyvek (Siltbreeze Records) and Awesome Color (signed to Thurston Moore’s label Ecstatic Peace), and just got a opening slot for a Titus Andronicus show at Purchase in April. That same week they are playing alongside Surfer Blood and Turbo Fruits. How cool is that? Pretty major stuff! I’m really excited for him and can’t wait to go to the show.

He wanted me to share one of their songs with you guys which you can grab below. It’s a tight garage jam radiating a feel good summer melody.

[NEW] The National – Bloodbuzz Ohio (mp3, radio rip)

By Will, March 24th 2010 — with 11 comments

A new National song makes getting up early that much better. Lauren Laverne debuted the new The National single a few hours ago on BBC radio and a webrip is already out. I was surprised that Terrible Love wasn’t used as the single after their performance on Fallon. Bloodbuzz Ohio has been played plenty of times live, with most fans being familiar with it.

The song has layers of smart instrumentation creating a dramatic chorus that The National have become so good at crafting over the years. It is a solid song but I am not sure how it compares to a single such as Fake Empire just yet…Knowing The National I am expecting it to reveal itself even further with more listens today.

Overall, a very solid song. Can’t wait for High Violet.

Update! : The band offered up a high quality version of the song:

So here is the highly anticipated Flying Lotus song “…And the World Laughs with You” which features Thom Yorke on guest vocals. Flying Lotus is a master at crafting mindblowing beats. The song creates a hazy atmosphere, as if you are stuck in a damp smokey tavern.

Knowing the post 2000 Radiohead, no one should be surprised that Thom Yorke suites a Flying Lotus song perfectly. He doesn’t come in until the track is halfway through and doesn’t step into the spotlight all that much. It’s a nice guest feature that got me a little bit more excited to dig into more Flying Lotus stuff.

The song is off Cosmogramma, the new album from Flying Lotus set for a release on May 4th.

[Video]: Julian Casablancas Gives Album Update

By Will, March 24th 2010 — with 2 comments

This is a really well done interview with ABC’s Dan Harris where Julian talks about The Strokes history, as well as their current recording situation. I am ying to hear a sample or something already.

Julian said the album sounds somewhat like First Impressions, although he may try to…funk it up.

Watch the video below

This new Blitzen Trapper song was a pleasant surprise. My day has been pretty bleak, so I wasn’t really expecting any other new tunes. I just got out of class not too long ago and found out that there is a new Blitzen Trapper mp3 up for free download. Sweet deal.

The song is called “Heaven And Earth” and you can get a good idea of how it sounds from the title. It’s a wholesome song built around vulnerable piano playing and extravagant strings. Eric Earley’s vocals are virtually the only other instrument on this song, and he carries it home beautifully. This song should play as a wonderful centerpiece at their live shows.

It will be off their upcoming new album Destroyer Of The Void which will be released on June 8th via Sub Pop. Listening to the mp3 below. Tour dates and track-listing for the album are after the jump.

Stream 2 New Broken Social Scene Songs From Forgiveness Rock Record

By Will, March 23rd 2010 — with 2 comments

Broken Social Scene are in with the times. They realize that the record business is indeed broken and new methods of promotion are needed in order to get people to buy music. That’s why they have offered two tracks off of their upcoming album Forgiveness Rock Record as streams. You can stream it below with a handy dandy widget, and if you would like you can purchase them right now.

This is one of the smarter moves that I have seen from a band in a while. The two songs given to us are the guitar focused “Forced To Love” and the gorgeous “All To All” which features Lisa Lobsinger (Reverie Sound Revue) on lead vocals. Both songs live up to the high standards that we expect from BSS. All To All even goes beyond them with its beautiful sincerity. I’m dying to hear the rest of the record. Something tells me it’s gonna be a major gem.

Band To Watch: Drink Up Buttercup

By Will, March 23rd 2010

Drink Up Buttercup have put out of of the finest debut albums of 2010. I also hear that their live shows are an absolute blast to attend. What’s not to love about these guys?

This is not the first time that you’ve heard about Drink Up Buttercup from me. I posted their wonderful single “Sosey & Dosey” almost one month ago. If you haven’t heard the song yet, I’m not sure what your waiting for (hit play at the end of this post).

Drink Up Buttercup are four gentlemen from Philadelphia who caught the attention of many music fans due to their enthusiastic live shows. After the release of Sosey & Dosey, the band was well on the way towards success. Since then everyone has been spitting out there name in high anticipation to see what would come of them. After spending a decent amount of time with their debut album, Born And Thrown On A Hook, my love for this band shouldn’t be a secret. Rather, I want to share it with as many people as possible.

There is plenty of new music out there in 2010, but not any quite like Drink Up Buttercup. They have the ability to write songs that sound like an acid trip at the circus (Seasickness Pills), and then create a sincere ballad like Lovers Play Dead. No two songs on the album sounds similar. Each song is filled with it’s own unique qualities that make the album a rewarding listen. Pink Sunshine is one of the many gem’s on this album that are worthy of a spot on any top songs list.

Their songs are short and sweet. They smartly find ways to cram as many glorious hooks and sounds that they can. It comes off as a natural talent for Drink Up Buttercup.

The album was official released today, and I can highly recommend it. It has gotten better with every listen, even though I already loved it from the start. Listen to two songs from the record below, and buy it from insound if you’d like to.

WOXY Goes Off The Air, Again

By Will, March 23rd 2010 — with 3 comments

I’m very, very, sad to report that WOXY has gone off the air again. It’s been only six months since the station moved from Cincinnati to Texas. Now the plug has been pulled. This was the message that you will get when you head over the the site:

Due to current economic realities and the lack of ongoing funding for WOXY’s operations, we’ve been forced to suspend our live broadcasts as of March 23rd. We’re continuing to explore options to keep The Future of Rock and Roll alive.

I’m only 19 years old. I grew up during the era where the radio went to shit. I can’t listen to the public radio stations, they just don’t play them like they used to. However, as a young 13-14 year old I discovered a radio station called WOXY. It was an online radio station from Cincinatti that played all the best modern music. It changed my life. I heard so many influential bands from Shivvy, Mike, and Joe, I can’t thank them enough. My enjoyment of WOXY was short lasted, when it shut down back in 2004.

However, it found its way back onto the air and continued to do its thing. I continued to listen to WOXY through my high school years. In many ways, the station deserves many thanks for this blog. Without them, I may not have developed the same love for music that I have now. It moved to Texas after being bought by a company called Future Sounds. It seemed like the station was finally safe for good. Apparently, we were all wrong.

This is a really bad situation considering that all the staffers moved out from Cincinnati to Texas in order to suit the move that Future Sounds set up for them. Now, they are stuck in Texas with no job. What the fuck, that’s not right Future Sounds!

Shivvy sent out the following letter to the WOXY listeners:

It is absolutely mindboggling to me that I have to sit down and write these words: WOXY.com is being shut down today by our owners at Future Sounds.

Mike, Joe, Brian, and I uprooted our lives to Austin under the belief that we were finally under ownership that would take things at the station to the next level. We also brought on Paige Maguire from here in Austin to help us do things on a promotional and marketing level that hadn’t really been in place for years. Yes, we have been dubbed “zombie radio” in the past after ownership shutdowns and resurrections, but it will take a pretty incredible company/plan coming around now to make me want to stick around at this point (although I guess we have to wait to see if anything shakes out in the days ahead). This time around, we no longer own WOXY and the entire situation is completely out of our hands.

The WOXY staff continued working last week during SXSW under good faith because a deal was “in motion” to continue funding for our operation. We were informed yesterday that that the deal fell through and now it is time for us all to walk away. There will be no farewell shows or weepy goodbyes. Our listeners deserve more than this, but I don’t think any of us on staff have it to give right now. It is, to be perfectly honest, quite a kick in the dick to have this occur again right on the heels of our most successful SXSW ever. But, I guess it would pretty much be a kick in the dick no matter what since we’ve only been living in Austin for *6 MONTHS* and have already had the rug pulled out from underneath us.

Thanks to everybody who has been SO amazing to me and this station over the years. I’ve been on this wild ride now for 12 years. I am thrilled that I have had a part in helping to program this station since 1998 and am incredibly proud of WOXY’s legacy

This is just heartbreaking to here. I hold WOXY dear to my heart, and truly feel for all of their hardworking staff. Hopefully someone else can fall from the sky and save the wonderful station from becoming extinct. They really played a big role helping shape my taste in music, and I can’t thank all of them enough.
