The Splinters

By Will, April 30th 2010

The Splinters are an all girl garage rock band from Oakland. They play scrappy garage rock that reminds me of Sleater-Kinney. They released their debut album Kick on March 9th via Double Negative. I have “Splintered Bridges” & “Mysterious”, two tracks from the album, available to download below. The songs have the vocals of girl groups mixed with raw guitar fueled angst that would sound perfect on a hot summer day.

Also posted is the music video directed by Joaquin Poblete which shows the ladies personally destroying a fans room. Scary.

[mp3]: Two Door Cinema Club – Costume Party

By Will, April 30th 2010 — with 4 comments

Two Door Cinema Club have become one of my favorite young bands this year. How can you not love their fantastic debut album Tourist History. It is filled with infectious catchy dance rock from top to bottom. In a matter of months they have become one of my favorite acts, which my Last.Fm proves. I have gotten almost a dozen of my friends into this band which really says a lot.

Anyway, the band has put their b-side “Costume Party” up for download on their website for the price of your email address. The song has been floating around for a while, but I didn’t have it yet, and maybe you don’t either. It was the b-side on their single release of “I Can Talk”, so unless you had that you are probably missing out. (Costume Party is apparently on the Japanese version of Tourist History as well)

It’s an enjoyable song, but I can understand it being left off as a b-side.

Two Door Cinema sold out Bowery Ballroom but there are still tickets left for their show at The Bell House on May 11th. Move fast and buy tickets here. I’ll be at both shows so let me know if you will be there too. We can say hello and chat!

The Dead Weather are streaming their new album Sea Of Cowards via live stream. The coolest part is they are premiering the album through an actual vinyl that is playing it. You got to love technology.

You can stream it below or head over to the band’s site.

Chris Weingarten’s Harsh Critique Of Music Bloggers

By Will, April 29th 2010 — with 4 comments

Sean Cannon over at BuzzGrinder posted a very interesting video of professional music critic Chris Weingarten. The video shows Weingarten speaking at the 140 Character Conference where he basically critiqued took a shit on music bloggers, hypem, twitter, and basically every form of the online blog/hype world.

He does bring up some valid points, but a lot of it seems like he is just spiteful. I agree that some bloggers just do it for hits and to get on hypem. But then again, there are plenty of bloggers who do it because of their love for music (myself included).

It is an interesting watch and I think all of you would find it at least somewhat interesting:

The video keeps auto playing so I took it down since it was probably very annoying. You can view it over at BuzzGrinder.

[new] Sun Kil Moon – Australian Winter (Stream)

By Will, April 29th 2010 — with 2 comments

Stereogum has the exclusive premiere of “Australian Winter”, a new song from Mark Kozelek who you know as Sun Kil Moon. It will be on his new album Admiral Fell Promises, which comes out July 13th via Caldo Verde. The song is a lovely bare bone piece that features only Mark and his nylon acoustic guitar. It sounds vintage. Isolation is a sweeping theme while listening to “Australian Winter”. Great piece.

Brandon Flowers Goes Solo

By Will, April 29th 2010 — with 7 comments

If you go to The Killers website, you will see that there is an image of a Brandon Flowers sign. Turns out he has finally gone solo. It shouldn’t be a surprise to any. It was only a matter of time. Hopefully he releases some decent sutff, but honestly I’m just hoping he gets out all of his experimental stuff so he can get back to work with The Killers. Come on, you are thinking it too.

Update: You can now go to the newly launched Brandon Flowers webpage. The album also has a title: Flamingo

[video] Yours Truly Presents: Delorean – Grow

By Will, April 29th 2010 — with 2 comments

Check out the awesome footage that Yours Truly caught of Delorean playing “Grow”, a sexy song from their new album Subiza.

Your Truly have done it again with another great moment captured to perfection. They are becoming masters of the craft alongside other great’s like La Blogotheque. Subiza officially drops June 8th via True Panther Sounds. Pre-order it on vinyl or cd from insound now. You won’t regret it. I promise.

Korallreven – The Truest Faith 7″

By Will, April 29th 2010 — with 2 comments

We only were allowed to post the remix to Korallreven‘s fantastic song “Loved Up” last November, and that was good enough to hold me. It is now April and the kind folks over at Acephale Records have let me know that the regular studio version of “Loved Up” will be included as a b-side on their new single “The Truest Faith”.

Korallreven consists of Marcus Joons and Daniel Tjäder, whose is the keyboardist for The Radio Dept. (see here). The band started three years ago on the South Pacific island Samoa where they were inspired by local Samoan Catholic church choirs, and breathtaking tropical nature. After listening to the two songs from this incredible single, I can assure you that Korallreven has successfully created the heavenly tropical sound they were searching for all along.

They are hard at work at a full length album that hopefully will be released later on this year. For now enjoy these two gem’s and gear up for the hot summer months.

If you like it be sure to grab the 7″ single from Acephale Records as there are only 500 copies available with no chance of a repress.

A Blog To Follow: Hotter Than Georgia Asphalt

By Will, April 29th 2010 — with 7 comments

I am still very sad about the decision to shut the wonderful internet station WOXY down, and it seems like it may not be resurrected this time around. One of their brilliant DJ’s Shivvy is now left without a job, and that should practically be a crime. With some time off he decided to create his own blog which he titled Hotter Than Georgia Asphalt. He is using it as an outlet for “his pop culture obsessions”. Trust me Shivv knows his stuff. Not only does he have an exceptional taste in music, but he also has quite an exqusite taste in film & TV as well.

If you got a minute check out his blog and subscribe. It will be worth it, I promise.
