Artist To Watch: Blake Mills

By Will, May 31st 2010 — with 4 comments

I discovered Blake Mills while I was reading Pitchforks “Guest List” interview with Chris Chu of the morning benders. Chris named dropped Blake’s song “Hey Lover” as one of his favorite of the year. I checked it out, and was wowed.

It turns out that Blake used to be in Dawes, back when they were still known as Simon Dawes. He has also been a touring guitarists for the likes of Band Of Horses, Jenny Lewis and Julian Casablancas. He just finished recording an album called Break Mirrors which will be released on July 6th via Record Collection.

If you head over to his myspace you can hear three of his songs. One of them is “Hey Lover”, and just like Chris said, the song is amazing. Actually, all three songs are. I was really moved by his work. Something just clicked with me on a personal level, which is truly saying something.

Go check those songs out. They are well worth your time. Blake also has a website where you can find more info on him, plus here even more songs.

If you really like “Hey Lover”, be sure to grab it on itunes.

[new] M.I.A. – Haters

By Will, May 30th 2010 — with 2 comments

If you want to read about the whole M.I.A./New York Times interview fiasco, then go to Pitchfork. They pretty much got that covered. In short, Lynn Hirschberg, a journalist for hte NY Times did a story on Maya, and when it came out M.I.A. said they misquoted her.

So Maya posted some audio clips of the interview on the N.E.E.T. Recordings Blog that apparently prove her point. You can also hear a new song from M.I.A. called “Haters”. It’s not including on the tracklisting for /\/\ /\ Y /\, so one can only assume this was made after the whole incident. It is a song that is certainly pointed towards Lynn Hirschberg and the rest of the NY Times. It samples Various Productions’ song “Hater”.

Introducing: Rudely Interrupted

By Will, May 30th 2010 — with 2 comments

Rudely Interrupted is truly a special band from Australia. For example, they were the first band to ever play at the United Nations. What truly makes them special is that five of six of the band members have some sort of mental or physical disability (such as Blindness, Deafness, Autism and Down Syndrome). Some even have both. For example the bands frontman Rory Burnside was born without eyes, and has Asperger’s syndrome. Nothing ever got in the way of them performing as Rudely Interrupted.

In June they will be touring America in support of their debut album, Tragedy of The Commons. For you fellow New Yorkers, on 6/10 they will be at Brooklyn Bowl, and 6/11 they will be rocking Piano’s along with Sunglasses.

You can hear a song from their album below. It’s called “Close My Eyes”, and it’s a great song. It would be best to describe it as dance rock, with a powerful message. That is what Rudely Interrupted are all about. This is truly an inspiration band. They have proved that anything is possible with a little bit of heart and love.

Watch the moving music video for “Close My Eyes” below:

If you would like to support the band, buy their album on itunes.

C.C. Sheffield – Lust For Life (Girls Cover)

By Will, May 30th 2010 — with 1 comment

Some of the best covers are when artists take another bands song and give it a completely new spin. This is exactly what LA artists C.C. Sheffield did with her cover of Girls’ “Lust For Life”. She gives it a sunny electro-pop spin that the clubbers would love. On the other hand, fans of the original may just shake their heads in disgust. It’s light and fun, but not something I will probably go back to ever again.

I wonder what Girls think of the cover. Download it below (via)

Introducing: Vital

By Will, May 30th 2010

Vital is Duranta D. Cook, a indie singer/songwriter who used to make hip hop. He experimented some more, and the result is The Vital EP. You can listen to songs from the EP on his website right now. I posted “Airport” below. It sounds light and free from the strains of life. Vital’s music comes off as powerful and uplifting, something our generation can certainly use more of.

[mp3] B.o.B – Kids (MGMT Cover)

By Will, May 29th 2010 — with 5 comments

Believe it or not, I have never listened to B.o.B. I am very familiar with his name, but I have never gone out of my way to listen to him, or that song “Airplanes” that every seems to be getting sick of. I saw that Luis from Pretty Much Amazing posted a cover that he did of MGMT’s “Kids”. It’s a fun cover (even if it is an over-covered song), and worth a listen. I may have to check out his other stuff now.

[new] T.I. – Got Your Back

By Will, May 29th 2010

T.I. is a rapper who I can listen to from time to time. Sometimes his hits just click with me. I am interested to see how King Uncaged will be, since it will be his first studio album since he was released from prison. Two songs from the album hit the net over the past couple of days. Both which will be on the album. “Got Your Back” is the albums first official single from the record, and features guest vocals from Keri Hilson. It really fell flat for me. Seems like it was made to be radio friendly song for the females. Not a fan of this song at all.

“Yeah Ya Know (Takers)” is the other song that surfaced. While it is certainly better than “Got Your Back”, it still leaves me wanting more from T.I. I will say, the instrumentation behind the track is pretty sweet.

Stream both songs below:

Got Your Back (Feat. Keri Hilson)

King Uncaged comes out on 8/17 via Atlantic Records. T.I. also just released a mixtape called Fuck A Mixtape which you can download here.

Shake Shack Mix

By Will, May 29th 2010 — with 4 comments

After my internship on Monday I walked over to my favorite restaurant, Shake Shack. It was a decent walk, and I couldn’t decide on an album to settle on. So I decided to actually utilize the shuffle feature on my ipod classic. I have over 13,000 songs, so shuffle often isn’t he best idea, especially when a lot of my itunes library consists of stuff that I haven’t even listened to yet.

I decided to take a chance, and it turned out to be a great idea. Not only was the shuffle a perfect mix of stuff I listen to, but it was an eclectic mix that somehow blended together really well. I figured I would share it with you, and see what you think.

So without further a do, here is my journey to shake shack mix. Just hit play and the yahoo media player that I have installed will do the rest.

[mp3]: Gorillaz – Demon Days
[mp3]: We Are Scientists – Callbacks
