The Hold Steady’s new album Heaven Is Whenever was finally released this past Tuesday. I am still diving into it fully, but I am certainly liking it. One of the bonus tracks that came from iTunes pre-orders is “Ascension Blues”, and it recently surfaced.
“Ascension Blues” is a crisp rocker that sounds like it would fit perfectly on Heaven Is Whenever. It features some pretty major guitar work and strings that tug on all of the dramatic heart strings. Craig sings that “we will all be friends in heaven”, and how can you not believe him.
If you haven’t bought the new album already, purchase it from Insound on Vinyl or CD.

I think I’m done with the Hold Steady. Loved them and saw them live twice up until the Boys and Girls in America disc. The last 2 CDs of been average at best and I dont see any improvement coming.

Except for Matt and Kim, the lamest band of note in NYC.

These comments are foolish.
How could you want anything more from a band. The worst thing that you can say about them is that they’re consistent. They’re that, but it’s a dumb thing to hang your hat on. The hooks they hang their hats on are expansive, expressive lyrics, guitar solos to pump a fist too. They appeal on an intellectual and a physical level. Their live shows pinch tears and their t-shirts aren’t expensive. All these things are cooler than the Dirty Projectors.
