Artist To Watch: Blake Mills

By Will, May 31st 2010 — with 4 comments Artist To Watch

I discovered Blake Mills while I was reading Pitchforks “Guest List” interview with Chris Chu of the morning benders. Chris named dropped Blake’s song “Hey Lover” as one of his favorite of the year. I checked it out, and was wowed.

It turns out that Blake used to be in Dawes, back when they were still known as Simon Dawes. He has also been a touring guitarists for the likes of Band Of Horses, Jenny Lewis and Julian Casablancas. He just finished recording an album called Break Mirrors which will be released on July 6th via Record Collection.

If you head over to his myspace you can hear three of his songs. One of them is “Hey Lover”, and just like Chris said, the song is amazing. Actually, all three songs are. I was really moved by his work. Something just clicked with me on a personal level, which is truly saying something.

Go check those songs out. They are well worth your time. Blake also has a website where you can find more info on him, plus here even more songs.

If you really like “Hey Lover”, be sure to grab it on itunes.

Hi–nice post, I’m a big Blake fan also, and we feature him weekly at Guitarology, that is, when he’s in town–just took a gig we Lucinda Williams on guitar, and will be hitting the road soon. I don’t what I love morw mabout him, his youthful optimism (just turned 24!), great playing, killer songs, or gorgeous voice. Anyways, if you get free on a weds nite, pop down and hang…cheers, s

SAW BLAKE MILLS PLAY WITH LUCINDA WILLIAMS LAST NIGHT AT THE VOGUE THEATER IN INDIANAPOLIS. I ACTUALLY WON TICKETS THROUGH LUCINDA’S FB FAN PAGE. BLAKE MILLS, THAT DRUMMER, THAT BASS PLAYER, AND LUCINDA WILLIAMS! I WOULD NOT CHANGE A THING. SOMETHING MAGICAL HAS HAPPENED IN THE COMBINATION OF THESE FOUR WHICH BROUGHT TO LIFE LUCINDA’S MUSIC ALREADY SPIRIT STUNNING WORK. IT WAS BLAKE MILLS. I AGREE HE IS PHENOMENAL, painfully phenomenal.

Becky nailed it….saw Lucinda last night at the Mt Winery in California…..she has always had great bands, but this one with Blake Mills was off the chain….he was awesome….and she is strong enough as a performer, and unselfish enough, that she gets out of the way and lets him wail….smart move….makes her whole show better and more ALIVE

Well i’m on board, just saw lucinda williams 2 nights ago in Victoria B.C. I knew it was going to be a great show but little did I know. blake just ruled on the guitar and now I’m a fan, never heard of him before but i think that will change. I also uploaded a video to youtube of an excellent guitar solo from that evening, please check it out it will melt your face as it did mine. How lucky for me as i was in the front row of a sold out show right in front of the guy. Awesome evening!
