[new] Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin – Sink/Let it Sway

By Will, May 24th 2010 — with 7 comments

I saw Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin live this past winter when they came to play at my school for free. I was only somewhat familiar with them before the show, but after the show, I became a believer. The band impressed me with their live show, proving to me that they are a highly underrated act that deserves to break out. After the show, the bands very own John Robert Cardwell told me that Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla was producing their next album. That left me even more excited for their 3rd album, which should only help the band obtain the popularity that they deserve.

Last Friday the band announced that there new album, Let It Sway, is coming out August 17th on Polyvinyl Records. This announcement came with a free download of a song called “Sink/Let It Sway”. It is a masterful guitar driven song that really shows the bands ability to craft a near perfect pop-rock song. Chris Walla did a good job with the production, surely bringing the best out of the Springfield Missouri boys. I have listened to the song 8 times already today. Sounds like a perfect song for the upcoming summer months.

Can’t wait to see these guys explode this year. They deserve it.

You can pre-order the album right now from Polyvinyl Records.

Luis from PMA premired Suckers remix of Local Natives exactly one week ago, and am sorry I am so late on posting this. Been enjoying it for a while, so I figured it was about time that I shared the goods. Suckers are touring with Local Natives right now, so who better to remix a song of Local Natives? They take the song apart and re-adjust the stems to their liking. The result is a fascinating listen.

The Roots just recently announced that their new album How I Got Over, is dropping on June 22nd. The lead single from the album, Dear God 2.0, surfaced online Saturday night and it has exploded since then.

The Roots MC, Black Thought, raps over the background of “Dear God”, a song from Jim James and the rest of Monster of Folk. So The Roots take an indie rock song, re-work it, and rap over it. The result: A fantastic song that proves that The Roots are one of the best out there.

“Dear God 2.0″ is a socially aware song that isn’t shy to talk about our problems. The use of Monster Of Folks “Dear God” is a fitting way to get their message through. I’m sold on this.

LCD Soundsystem @ Terminal 5, 5/21/2010

By Will, May 23rd 2010 — with 8 comments

First off let me vent about my annoying experience before Fridays show at the horrible venue that is Terminal 5. I have a lot of gripes with the venue…such as their very rude and unfriendly security staff and often crummy sound quality.

As I was entering Fridays show at Terminal 5. I have seen dozens of shows at Terminal 5, and have gotten in with my camera every time. For some reason this time security didn’t let me take it in, because it has a removable lens.

It sucks because I take photos for you guys, and now I lost that resource. I was annoyed, but it wasn’t the end of the world. The staff was really rude about it, as usual. They told me I had to check in the camera. We get to the check in center, and they make me pay for it. It was only $3 bucks, but it was really stunning that I would have to pay for them to take my camera away. They were pretty rude about it too, which just added to it. It was just a way for them to make a quick buck, which was pretty pathetic.

So now you know why there are a lack of the usual photos. (I took some with my phone though) Venting done….

Holy Ghost! opened the show, and it turns out it was their 3rd live show ever. To be honest you wouldn’t have known if they told you, they sounded pretty good. The set started out really strong, and sort of tailed off at the end, but they definitely showed some serious potential. They got the crowd moving and grooving, so that is all that really matters. They have some big hooks and undeniable beats, along with some incredible transitions. Look out for them to play a heavy hand in the Dance/Electronic scene soon.

James Murphy and the rest of LCD Soundsystem came out wasting no time with a triumphant version of Us V Them that really got the party started. They played a mix of songs from all 3 albums including their early singles like Yr City’s A Sucker & Losing My Edge. It was my 2nd time seeing the band, and I was completely blown away by how powerful they sounded. They had the crowd in the palm of their hands, causing chaos on the floor with epic performances of Get Innocuous and Daft Punk is Playing at My House.

The clear highlight of the night was All My Friends, which was easily one of the best live performances that I have ever seen at a concert. The song built to incredible heights, delivering even further than I dreamed it would. The crowd absolutely lost it, causing a picture perfect moment. It is safe to say that All My Friends is as close as a modern classic as they come.

The band didn’t miss a beat at all Friday night, making all the hipsters dance for two hours straight with flawless performances that truly captures the essence of what LCD Soundsystem is all about. With an encore of Someone Great, Losing My Edge, no one could complain. Throw in a sincere rendition of New York, I Love You But Your Bringing Me Down, and I am completely sold. They weren’t done there. They finished with a short cover of Empire State Of Mind along with an assault of white balloons from the roof that capped one of the best concerts of 2010.

If this really is LCD Soundsystems last tour as a band, I can live with that fact knowing what I witness this past Friday night. God bless James Murphy.

Posted after the jump are some photos I was able to take with my camera. Sorry that I couldn’t get better ones. Fuck Terminal 5.

Pearl Jam @ MSG 5/20

By Will, May 22nd 2010 — with 3 comments

There are just some bands that everyone should see once in their lifetime. These are legendary bands that will live on for many generations. When you tell people you saw them, you should expect reactions of jealousy and awe. Pearl Jam is surely one of these acts.

I saw them Thursday night thanks to my friend Broker, and it was just as awesome as I hoped.

Black Keys opened the show with a pretty short set. The band had their good stuff, but I think their sound got lost in the massiveness that is MSG. They played a lot of old songs, but they also played plenty of cuts from their new album, Brothers. I am going to have to check them out at a more intimate location, I think it would be a lot better.

Pearl Jam came on at 8:50 and didn’t get off until 11:25. Talk about getting your moneys worth, huh? Eddie Veder is as illustrious of a front man as they come. My seats were located behind the band giving us an interesting view of the stage. Eddie called the crowd in front of him the big city, and he turned to us calling us the small town. Classy fella. They played a lengthy set that featured two encores. They played all of the hits: Even Flow, Once, Alive…and even many of their deeper cuts, covering pretty much every album.

I am not the biggest Pearl Jam fan in the world, but I gotta hand it to the rest of the people at MSG, they know their stuff.

No matter what they played, the fans were ready, singing back every single lyric with passion and enthusiasm, wowing me. The proved the legend that Pearl Jam fans are some of the greatest fans in the world true.

If you ever have a chance to see Pearl Jam live, huge fan, or casual, don’t miss it.

Sorry about the lack of frequent posts lately. As I stated earlier in the week, I started my internship at Beggars. I also am working my summer job when I’m not interning so I am super busy. Gotta save up some $$ for my trip to England this winter. I also saw Pearl Jam on Thursday & LCD Soundsystem on Friday, so I have had literally no time to update this here blog of mine.

Things will get back to normal once I get into the swing of things. For now, enjoy the excellent British Sea Power b-side “Don’t You Want To Be A Bird?” from their Ended On An Oily Stage single release from 2005.

[new] Muse – Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)

By Will, May 21st 2010 — with 1 comment

A few days ago my buddy Rogo posted a new Muse song called “Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)”. It was an exclusive single that the band gave away to the Twilight: Eclipse movie. I strangely didn’t care to check it out until now. I used to be a pretty big fan of Muse, but ever since the release of The Resistance it seems as though I am not as crazy about them as I used to be That isn’t to say that I don’t still listen to Muse. But I admit, I don’t revisit them as much as I used to. Times change, people change, tastes change. I am certainly not the same person I was when Absolution came out in 2003, or even the 16 year old when Black Holes & Revelations came out. Muse will always find a way back into my speakers.

I finally checked out “Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)”, and I gotta say, it ain’t half bad. Bombastic and dramatic, but would you expect any less from Muse? It’s a fun song, and it helps to take the mind off things every once and a while.

[video] Band Of Horses – Laredo (Live, Letterman)

By Will, May 21st 2010 — with 2 comments

Band Of Horses stopped by Letterman last night to play “Laredo”, a song off of their latest album Infinite Arms. Seems that many people are experiencing mixed feelings about this song and the rest of the record. Either way, I enjoyed the performance:

Last week I posted about the rumored new single from Arcade Fire called The Suburbs/Month Of May. Turns out that the rumors were true. Yesterday, Arcade Fire updated their website with a mini record player with two brief song snippets of the aforementioned songs, The Suburbs/Month Of May.

“The Suburbs” sounds like a sunny little number, while “Month Of May” features an upbeat guitar riff that is more along the vein of Eagles Of Death Metal, but it certainly has caught my interest.

The clips are very brief and feature vinyl cracks and snaps, making the listening process just that much more authentic. Can’t wait to hear the songs in full!

Visit their website to hear the snippits right now.
