[new] Underworld – Scribble

By Will, June 23rd 2010

Believe it or not, I wasn’t familiar with the longstanding British electronic legends known as Underworld until I saw them perform before Radiohead at All Points West in 2008. They put on a good show but I’ll admit I never gave them a fair shot. I just saw that they are giving away a new song for free. The song is called “Scribble”, and will be on their new album, Barking, which will be released on September 13th.

It is the radio edit of the song. It’s an excellent 4 minutes of electronic wonder that you shouldn’t be without.

Hear 2 New Interpol Songs Played Live: Summer Well & Success

Interpol played their first show in a while this past Monday in Rochester, New York. The band debuted 2 new songs called “Summer Well” & “Success” along with “Lights”. The songs are also in the same dark atmosphere that we have gotten somewhat familiar with on “Lights”. I’m starting to really come around to “Summer Well”. I think these songs will sound a ton better on the proper recordings. All of the new songs will see the light of day on Interpol’s new album, which is set to come out on September 7th via Matador.

There are live bootlegs of the 2 new songs thanks to fyinterpol. Check out the songs below:

What do you think of them?

Introducing: PURPL PoP

By Will, June 23rd 2010 — with 3 comments

I realize that I probably post bands/songs that usually fall within the same sort of genre here: Indie rock/pop. There is occasionally some hip-hop, dance, electro, etc…but I will admit I could have a little more diversity from time to time. It’s also pretty clear that I post almost no fun pop music on here. There is nothing like a good fun song that serves as a perfect way to take the edge off. That’s exactly what PURPL PoP did for me me when I discovered “The Way”, the bands first single.

PURPL PoP is a two man band based in Stockholm, Sweden, consisting of members Le’Andre & Skoog. Two months ago they were virtually unknown but that has changed ever since they showcased the music video for “The Way”. Since, they have become an underground sensation in their native land. I’m not surprised, because the song is a ton of fun. It’s 3 minutes of addictive pop that isn’t shy of treading on every genre’s waters. They even drift near Dizzee Rascal grime territory at the start of the song, before introducing the songs chorus. After it hits you, good luck getting it out of your head. This is just smart pop music.

When I first heard the song I wasn’t completely feeling it. It seemed out of place for my tastes. Yet, there was something about it that made me want to revisit. I gave it a few more spins, and I started to come around to it. Now I’m addicted. In the matter of an hour it grew on me tremendously.

You can hear multiple genres of music in PURPL PoP, and I think in the end, that’s what sold me. It’s soaked with so many different influences, there is no way you can’t find something to enjoy about “The Way”. Something tells me that PURPL PoP is a name that your going to be seeing around a lot someday. These guys are on the verge of becoming the next Chiddy Bang like success story.

I posted a stream of “The Way”, along with it’s official music video:

[music video] Crystal Castles – Celestica

By Will, June 23rd 2010 — with 4 comments

Watch the new Crystal Castles music video for “Celestica” below. It features Alice walking around, and singing while laying in the grass. It also has children playing violins in graveyards. Just a normal day for them, I guess…

Proof That Local Natives Are Classy Fellas

By Will, June 23rd 2010 — with 1 comment

As if you needed proof…

I recently stumbled across a video of my boys Local Natives playing “Airplanes” exclusively for a girl who traveled 14 hours to see them, only to get rejected because of an age restriction. The band found out and played “Airplanes” for her in the cold winter night. The band always sounds good live, but this performances was especially special.

Not many bands would do this. Total class. The video isn’t new by any means, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t worth your time. Watch the video below:

[music video] Interpol – Lights

By Will, June 22nd 2010 — with 4 comments

Interpol have officially released their new music video for “Lights”. It was directed by Charlie White. The band are giving it away as a free high definition download at their website. It was posted along with the following message:

Before this video is available anywhere else, we’re posting it here as an HD download, free for you. We’re amazed by it, and think you’ll enjoy seeing it as the director intended it to be seen – in high quality. It takes a couple minutes to download, but trust us, it is worth it.

The video is very well made with some excellent direction. The strong use of black vs. white is a perfect fit for Interpol. It’s a bit of an odd video, but it’s certainly worth a watch:

Download it right here.

The wonderful L.A. based music blog Aquarium Drunkard has come a long way from just being a music blog. It has now gone on to bigger things like releasing albums on its own record label. Today he released a compilation called L’Aventure with various artists from L.A. covering songs from Televisions’ 1978 album, Adventure. Local Natives took on “Careful” and the result is typical Local Natives beauty. Check it out below:

You can actually download the whole compilation for free over at Aquarium Drunkard. There is the option to donate $, all earnings go straight to the Silverlake Conservatory of Music.

[new] Blonde Redhead – Here Sometimes

By Will, June 21st 2010 — with 1 comment

Earlier today at my internship at Beggars, Blonde Redhead came into the office. Which makes the fact that I’m posting about them now just a little bit strange.

Anyway, Blonde Redhead just put out a new song called “Here Sometimes”. Now word on any official release or inclusion on a EP/LP/Single, but chances are I will somehow find out sooner than later. It’s a dark synth led track that stays mysterious while also showing blissful moments of clarity.

Enjoy the tune:

[new] The Books – A Cold Freezin’ Night

By Will, June 21st 2010 — with 1 comment

The Books already gave us a taste of new album, The Way Out (comes out July 20th via Temporary Residence), when they gave us a mp3 of new song “Beautiful People”. Now Fader has posted another new song called “A Cold Freezin’ Night”.

The sample happy NYC-band has included samples from a childish conversation between two kids, one male, the other female. I can’t help but laugh when I hear the conversation, because it sounds like the type of things I hear coming out of my brother and sisters mouths every day…ok, maybe not so much of the disturbing violence that we hear hear from the boy.

Beneath the convo is an onslaught of various sounds, including electronic effects and a pulsating drum beat. It is not your standard song, by any means.

[Contest] Win Wolf Parade’s Expo 86 on CD

By Will, June 21st 2010 — with 20 comments

Sub Pop accidentally gave me an extra copy of Wolf Parade’s new album, Expo 86. So I figured, why keep two copies when I can share the goods with one of you guys. I got the ok from them to run a giveaway contest for the extra CD.

Wolf Parade are an amazing band, and this is a great album. It can be yours, for free. All you gotta do is leave a comment with your favorite Wolf Parade song, and tell me why it’s your favorite. No silly answers like “It’s SICK”. Tell me about a lyric you love. A guitar riff that you can’t get enough of. A particular shriek from Spencer. Best of all, maybe tell me about a memory that you have attatched to one of the songs. I want you to get on a personal level…If your’re up to it, that is.

Expo 86 isn’t released until next Tuesday, June 29th. So I will have this contest open until 11:59 P.M. that day. Good luck!!
