Weezer Are Going Indie

Stereogum reports that Weezer have left their longtime record label Geffen, and are looking for an indie label to put out their new album (their 8th) on 9/13. This came from a report from the New Times in which Rivers said:

“I’ve spent the entire morning trying to come up with a name for the record,” joked Cuomo, who just turned 40 this year. “How does Heavy Mental sound? There’s definitely going to be more raw rock energy on this one.”

I hope Weezer pull through on this one. The fact that they left their longtime major label to go for an indie is a positive sign in my eyes. They’re probably tired of being pressured by the major label suites to write “radio hits”. I’m all for more artistic freedom on their part.

Their last few albums were fun, but they need to put out a real solid album for a lot of other people to even care anymore. I have a funny little feeling that this next album is gonna rock.

Check back for more news. I’ll keep you posted.

I sure hope you are right. For a long time I sincerely tried to keep myself from becoming part of the the “they sucked after the blue album and Pinkerton” crowd but after Make Believe I finally accepted it. But I know they have it in them, and yes, this is a good sign.
