Last night I was treated to see The Black Keys at Terminal 5 thanks to my friend Elisabeth. Terminal 5 usually gives me many problems, specifically in relation to my camera, so I decided to just leave it at home. Ever since I started this blog, concert going and taking photos have gone hand in hand. I spend a lot of time trying to take photos. So it was nice to just watch the show casually again. It was a lot of fun to just sit back and watch some good live music.
We got there a little late and only caught The Whigs. What I did saw left me impressed. I’d check out The Whigs live show again even though I only saw a couple songs. They got some live chops.
Black Keys started their set with all of their old classics, giving fans plenty to rock out to. Dan and Pat were in full control of Terminal 5, bringing the house down with garage rock and soul blended together to form some of the most passionate rock and roll around today – period. The show was obviously a lot different from when I saw them open up for Pearl Jam earlier this summer. A more intimate setting clearly played to their favor. The band took the recorded songs and molded them into monstrous jams that were simply…bad ass. “Strange Times” was just as perfect as I always dreamed it would be.
Midway through the set the band brought on their little mini backing band for songs on the bands new album, Brothers. With the needed keys and bass for the new songs, it was a smooth transition into the new songs. “Next Girl” and “10 Cent Pistol” were both rocking and soulful throwing in enough blues and soul to smooth the soul. I’ve seen quite a few shows at T5, but the Black Keys performance of “Tighten Up” ranks amongst the best performances I’ve ever seen there. Simply amazing. It was also great to hear “Your Touch” a song that really helped get me into The Black Keys back in the day.
I’ve been a fan of the Black Keys since about 2005-2006, but until this year I wouldn’t consider myself a huge fan. Well after spending more time with their older albums, recently obsessing over Brothers, and seeing them rock Terminal 5, I can say that the two boys from Akron, Ohio have sealed the deal as one of my more recent elite favorites.
