Weezer Are Going Indie

By Will, July 19th 2010 — with 1 comment

Stereogum reports that Weezer have left their longtime record label Geffen, and are looking for an indie label to put out their new album (their 8th) on 9/13. This came from a report from the New Times in which Rivers said:

“I’ve spent the entire morning trying to come up with a name for the record,” joked Cuomo, who just turned 40 this year. “How does Heavy Mental sound? There’s definitely going to be more raw rock energy on this one.”

I hope Weezer pull through on this one. The fact that they left their longtime major label to go for an indie is a positive sign in my eyes. They’re probably tired of being pressured by the major label suites to write “radio hits”. I’m all for more artistic freedom on their part.

Their last few albums were fun, but they need to put out a real solid album for a lot of other people to even care anymore. I have a funny little feeling that this next album is gonna rock.

Check back for more news. I’ll keep you posted.

Band To Watch: Strider Hero

By Will, July 19th 2010 — with 9 comments

Strider Hero are a duo that are bound for greatness. They are more than just a duo. Arthur & Michael Imperial are brothers. Hailing from Toronto, Ontario, Strider Hero was greatly influenced by their self proclaimed hippy father from the Philippines who bumped plenty of classic rock for them.

Welly Daddy Imperial, you should be proud. Your sons have turned into talented musicians who are ready to make their mark on the musical landscape. Their self titled debut ep is one of the happiest things that you will hear this year , period. Immediately I sensed that these guys had incredible musical talent that came naturally. Their melodies are clear as daylight equally as elegant as it is catchy. The EP is 7 songs filled to the brim with pop sensibilities, smart lyrics, and great production. What else do you need?

I posted two songs from the EP below. The first, “Brave” is what Simon & Garfunkel would sound like if they were still making music in 2010. The second, “Fake New York Girls” is drifts between psych rock and electronic pop. Yeah, you need these songs now.

If you like it, the EP is available to snag from itunes or Cd Baby. For more on Strider Hero: Myspace | Facebook | Twitter

[music video] Sunset – Loveshines II

By Will, July 19th 2010

Just stumbled across Sunset‘s “Loveshines II”. I’m loving it’s hazy drugged out vibe. Sunset is the solo project of Bill Baird, and Bill sure knows how to craft a song. Can’t find an mp3 of this one, so I’ll leave you with it’s music video:

[new] Women – Eyesore

By Will, July 19th 2010

Women are finally back. It’s been almost two years since they graced us with delights like “Black Rice” from their self titled debut. On 9/28 the bands new album Public Strain, will be released via Jagjaguwar. The band gave away a new song called “Eyesore” last week, and I figured it was about time I joined the party.

The band seems to have taken the sound found on their debut and expanded upon it even more. The guitar work and vocals are a perfect couple. These gentlemen are really onto something…

[mp3]: Son Of Rams – Triple Eyed

By Will, July 19th 2010 — with 2 comments

Remember Family Trees? If not, you need to hear their song “Dream Talkin‘”.  One of the members of Family Trees, Joseph Pruitt, has another band called Son Of Rams, and he is producing some excellent work with them.

He has his debut album available to download for free on his website (download the zip right here). He recently added a new song called “Triple Eyed”, and it’s wonderful. Loving his sound. That guitar riff is killer. Joseph, where have you been all my life? He’s batting 1.000 with my ears right now.

[must have mp3] Larsen B – Marilyn

By Will, July 19th 2010

So my friends know me well. When my friend Rogo recommended me a song saying that he knew it was my style when he found it, I knew it would be a good one. I didn’t think it would be as good as it turned out to be. The artist that Rogo introduced me to is Hertfordshire natives Larsen B. The song was the absolutely stunning “Marilyn”.

“Marilyn” is a song that aims big with a warm, heartfelt approach. The song is a clear standout because it is simply songwriting done right. It sounds familiar, but so fresh. If you aren’t swept up by its chorus, well, you simply aren’t trying hard enough.

Add this to my best songs of 2010 list.

“Marilyn” comes off of Larsen B’s debut album, Musketeer.

[video] Paean – Move, Legs

By Will, July 19th 2010

Paean are a 6 piece from Fort Collins, Colorado who released their debut album, Songs For Us To Sing, this past April. I’m ashamed to say I missed the release, as I didn’t know about them until I received an e-mail from the bands very own Aaron Landgraf. He shared with me the bands live recording of a new song called “Move, Legs”, and I was impressed. The 8 minute song is an organic song that is both haunting and beautiful. Check it out below:

One things for sure. These guys sure do have some live chops. To hear more from Paean, head to their myspace.

(btw, Two of their members are in Candy Claws)
