Introducing: The Ray Summers

By Will, July 21st 2010

Woah where did The Ray Summers come from? After hearing two of the Scottish bands songs (Heshka Rashka + Crazy World), I am greatly impressed. They have a little bit of The Coral in them, with a little more festive energy. Their songs are a shit-ton of fun. I can only imagine how crazy their live shows are. If they ever come to NYC, I’m there.

Stream “Heshka Rashka” (their forthcoming single) & “Crazy World”:

[mp3] Soft Metals – Love Or Music

By Will, July 21st 2010 — with 1 comment

It seems like electronic music is at a good state these days. I keep finding new electronic dance songs that pull me in and throw me out impressed. Todays latest love affair? Soft Metal.

The Portland, Oregan duo’s incredible sound is put on full display with their romantic jam, “Love Or Music”. Patricia Hall’s sexy vocals are a match made in heaven for their brand of synthesizer music. I’m in love.

It will be included on Soft Metals debut EP, The Cold World Melts. It’s dropping on 12″ vinyl on August 12th via Brooklyn label, Captured Tracks. Tour dates are posted below:

[new] Ra Ra Riot – Boy

By Will, July 21st 2010 — with 1 comment

How do you a man’s groggy Wednesday better? New music from Ra Ra Riot of course. The band has just released “Boy”, the first single from new album The Orchard for free download on their website.

“Boy” features a pretty fat bassline. Everything else comes together in typical Ra Ra Riot fashion. Delicious strings from Ra Ra Riot’s lovely ladies, strong drumming, and ridiculously clean vocals from Mr. Wes Miles. From the sound of it, seems like their playing has gotten tighter. These guys prove once again why they are arguably one of the best young bands around, period.

You can also buy “Boy” on itunes. You will get “Keep It Quiet (Bear)” (a stripped down version of The Orchard track that the band previewed last month) and a cover of Sparks’ “Saccharin and the War. The Orchard comes out August 24th via Barsuk. You can pre-order it now.

Maximum Balloon – If You Return (Feat. Little Dragon)

By Will, July 21st 2010 — with 3 comments

If your memory needs to refreshed, Maximum Balloon is the solo project of TV On The Radio’s guitarist, Dave Sitek. Our first taste of his debut solo effort was “Tiger”. One Thiry BPM found an mp3 of his new single. “If You Return”. It features Little Dragon’s vocalist, Yukimi Nagano on vocals, leading the funky electronic track.

The guitars are totally TVOTR, but who is complaining. I’m really liking this song. Maybe even more than “Tiger”.

Miniature Tigers – Goldskull

By Will, July 21st 2010 — with 1 comment

Really enjoying “Goldskull” from (ex Phoenix, AZ) Brooklyn’s Miniature Tigers. It’s featured on their new album, Fortress. It features some gorgeous Beach Boys influenced harmonies over Neon Indian electronics. It then makes sense that Neon Indian himself produced the song (Chris Chu of the morning benders produced the rest of the album!).

“Gold Skull” is perfect for a nice highway joy ride with the windows down:

Fortress is out 7/27 via Modern Art Records.

[new] Beck – Summertime (From Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Sountrack)

By Will, July 21st 2010 — with 12 comments

Beck recorded songs for Michael Cera’s fictional band Sex Bob-Omb in the upcoming movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The movies that made the cut are in the movie and the actors sing over them. However there were also some songs that didn’t make the cut, and are being added as bonus tracks on the deluxe versions of the album. “Summertime” is one of these songs, and itunes has made it available to purchase already.

It’s a grungy 2 minute rocker with fuzzy guitars that older Beck fans will adore. You can stream it below:

The movie’s trailer is posted below:
