By Will, August 24th 2010 — with 1 comment

Today Beach House released a new live EP from their iTunes Sessions. It features reworkings of 5 songs, along with a new song called “White Moon”. As expected, it’s a top tune that features fine harmonies and lovely transitions. Would you expect anything less from Beach House?

Along with “White Moon”, it also includes new versions of “Gila”, “Walk in the Park”, “Norway”, “Silver Soul”, and “Real Love”. You can stream “White Moon” below:

Yellow Ostrich – Morgan Freeman EP

By Will, August 23rd 2010

My man Yellow Ostrich has a new EP out, and it’s pretty much an all out dedication to the man, the legend, the one and only: Morgan Freeman. Yeah, you know you want to download this bad boy. It’s a fun EP dedicated to Morgan’s career. The music is there, and the songs are quite enjoyable. It’s available to download for free over at Bandcamp.

You can also stream it below:

Here is a new song called “Every Breaking Wave” that U2 played at Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland on August 21st. I haven’t formed a absolute opinion on the song yet, but there are some really beautiful guitar melodies coming out of the edge. Some of his best in a while. He never fails me.

Thanks to Sylvain Gilbert & Marie-Christine Champagne for the tip!

[new] Carl Barat – Run With The Boys (Radio Rip)

By Will, August 23rd 2010 — with 3 comments

Carl Barat is a busy, busy, lad. The Libertines long awaited reunion at Leeds and Reading is a few days away (Aug 27 & 28th respectively). They will play a warm up show @ The Forum Kentish Town on the 25th. Carl is also prepping the release of his untitled solo album.

Earlier today, Zane Lowe premiered “Run With The Boys”, a song that will be on the record. It’s a pretty exciting song, not sounding quite like anything he’s done with The Libertines or Dirty Pretty Things. Loving the jazz elements he threw in, they mix quite well. Looks like Carl has got some good ideas that may produce an enjoyable solo album.

I got a radio rip for you guys to chew on for now. If your going to any of the upcoming Libertines reuinion shows, I envy you. Let me know how they go. For the rest of us, we will stick to the albums and new songs like “Run With The Boys”.

Update: A CDQ version of the song has appeared. Here you go:

Phil Selway’s debut album Familial is quite strong. If you didn’t know that he was Radiohead’s drummer you would think he was a brand new talent. Phil is a seasoned vet and he handles singing and guitar playing like a pro. I’ve only gotten through the album once, but it made quite an impression on me. Are any of us surprised that it’s good? It’s Radiohead related, so the answer should be no.

You can stream a 4 song sampler from Familial below, or just stream the entire thing at NPR right now.

Familial drops on August 31st via Nonesuch Records.

If you saw St. Vincent’s music video for “Laughing With A Mouth Of Blood” you may recall that Carrie Brownstein (of Sleater-Kinney) and Fred Armisen starred in it as a pretty funny tag team. TwentyFourBit has pointed out that the duo has teamed with Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels and IFC for a television adaptation of ThunderAnt, the duo’s online sketch comedy. It will be called, Portlandia. There is even new music from them involved. Pretty awesome.

I was a big fan of their work in the St. Vincent music video, so this sounds like it could be pretty great. I will keep you guys updated as more news comes along.

[music video] The Boxer Rebellion – If You Run

By Will, August 23rd 2010 — with 4 comments

Here is the music video for “If You Run” a new song from The Boxer Rebellion that they recorded for Going the Distance, the new Justin Long/Drew Barrymore movie (it actually looks like a decent romantic-comedy). It’s a pretty powerful piece of music. I haven’t checked out too much of their other stuff, but I’m enjoying their sound here.

Band To Watch: Beast Make Bomb

By Will, August 23rd 2010 — with 2 comments

I’m really impressed with the sounds that I am hearing from NYC’s Beast Make Bomb. They shared a three song sampler of their debut Skinny Legs EP (due September 5th), and there is quite a lot of talent to be found within the tunes.

Upon first listens their sound reminded me of a more tame Be Your Own Pet. With female vocals and a heavy guitar influenced sound, it was the easiest connection I made. They have some interesting tricks up their sleeves in the department of melody. Check out the excellent “Zombie Song” should be your first taste of the band. It’s a pretty good indication of what goodies Beast Make Bomb have for you.

Their songs have sleek guitar riffs, and vocals that co-align to perfection. The songs are catchy and instantaneous, finding a permanent home in your head. You will comfort the tunes, and hit repeat without a second thought. They just have a way with you.

These guys are certainly one to watch. “Zombie Song” has the potential to be a hit. If you are in NYC on September 5th, head to the Bowery Poetry Club to see their EP release show. I may be there!

The EP will be available on the bands bandcamp come September 5th. In the meantime, visit them on their website, myspace, and twitter. Keep an eye out, these kids are on the way to big things!

This song basically says fuck off, I’m gonna do what I want to do. I like that attitude. Oh, and the song too. Comes from Canada band Brazillian Money’s new 7″ featuring the “Doing What I Want” single. It’s brought to you via Totally Disconnected, the new imprint from Edmonton.

Grab the song below. Play this when your feeling like an angsty teen:

If you like it, the 7″ is available to buy at Totally Disconnected. It’s limited to 300 copies.
