Blackpool is both the name of Vic Godard’s new EP and a song from the EP. Vic Godard is a solo artist who used to be in a punk band known as Subway Sect right around the time of The Sex Pistols.
He is released his new EP Blackpool after writing the songs with Irvine Welsh a few years back for the musical of the same name. The song “Blackpool” itself is a winner. Really eccentric and catchy. This was a pleasant surprise on my lazy Saturday.
Holy shit, this is just flat out amazing. Cee-Lo Green who most probably know from Gnarls Barkley has given us his new song “Fuck You”, and it’s like I said, it’s amazing. It sounds like an old retro soul classic, while also sounding fresh, vibrant, and colorful. The song is vulgar, not afraid to drop a few lot of fucks and some well placed n-bombs. He tells that girl how it is. If you’ve ever been fucked over, then this song is your new anthem. Blast it when you drive by your ex and scream it out. This song is certainly going to be a hit, but I don’t know how they will get this in on the radio…
“Fuck You” will be off Cee-Lo’s new album, Lady Killer, coming out later this fall.
Is this song of the year material? I think so. Good luck getting this song out of your head.
Cee-Lo is willing to give you two more songs (that are probably on the album) for free download. All you gotta do is sign up for his mailing list. You get the albums first single “Georgia” and a song from his Stray Bullets mixtape for free.
I posted the soulful “Georgia” below along with his exciting cover of Band Of Horses “No One’s Gonna Love You” (one of my favorite BOH songs), which is also on the album.
If you enjoyed my post on the upcoming band Living Days, and live in NYC, you can win a pair of tickets for their show at The Studio at Webster Hall on August 27th. Naked Hearts and Teletextile open. Unfortunately the show is 19 and over only. So please, make sure your of age. Sorry for you’re under 19, I don’t make the rules. Plus, I still can’t get into 21+ shows.
God this song “Safe In L.A.” is super sugary sweet. It comes from Gold Motel’s debut album Summer House.. They bring an addictive retro sound that is a mix of power pop and mo-town. “Safe In L.A” has the mixture just right. The video is great too. You’ll thank me later:
Summer House is available digitally now. It’s physical release is coming out later this fall. They also got some fall tour dates coming up. Check them out, after the jump:
The Thermals new single “I Don’t Believe You” is incredibly catchy & it’s music video is pretty funny. Good formula for success, if you ask me. Check it out below:
The video will be off their new album, Personal Life.
Fever Ray is releasing her cover of Peter Gabriel’s “Mercy Street” as a limited edition 7″ that will drop on September 14th via Mute. Fever Ray transforms it into a dark, sinister track that you would probably mistake as her own. Overall, it’s a good cover.
NME offered it up as a free download yesterday, and you can grab it below:
Real Estate are back with a pretty fantastic new single called “Out Of Tune” that you can hear now. The 7″, backed by b-side “Resevoir’” will be out on True Panther on October 12th. “Out Of Tune” is a shining song with a killer melody. It’s pretty.
Of course of Montreal’s new music video for “Coquet Coquette” features the band trying to conquer people on a beach. Of course there are cannibals who eat people and have a pale dude who humps corpses. In of Montreal’s bizzaro-world, this makes sense. Of course it does…
Imagine if this is what the others were like on Lost. Yikes!
So a new Brandon Flowers song called “Swallow It” found it’s way onto the internet and you can hear it now. Flowers called this the most ambitious track on Flamingo. When asked about the song, he told spin:
“There’s a fair amount of experimentation on that song, but it’s still very much a pop song. I’m so proud of that one. That’s what I admired so much about bands like the Beatles. When they did experiment or go out on a limb a little bit, it was still accessible, it still made the world go ’round.”
The song does get better after a few repeated listens. Sort of sounds like something off of Sam’s Town, but that’s just me.
Stream it below:
Spin has short previews of five songs from Flamingo, including “Swallow It”. Check them out here. What do you guys think of the song?
Jenny Lewis is the front-women of Rilo Kily, but she also has released some solo albums. Now she has teamed up with Johnathan Rice to form Jenny and Johnny. They’re releasing their debut LP, I’m Having Fun Now, on August 31st via Warner Brothers.
Thanks to this handy widget, you can stream three songs from the album: Big Wave, Switch Blade, and Scissor Runner. Based upon these songs their sound seems to be a light country mixed with a fun glossy guitar rock sound in the same vein as The Raveonettes.
Check the songs out below. You can even download an mp3 of “Scissor Runner” for free, after the widget.
