Michael Schafer

By Will, September 10th 2010

Michael Schafer reached out to me with a link to his bandcamp page, along with this message:

Sound quality is admittedly low, but everything was recorded with the trusty Macbook built-in mic after midnight.

Michael, don’t worry about the quality (which was fine in my opinion), the songs speak for themselves. These are sincere, folk rock songs that are warm and upbeat.

He calls his work a “night-time” acoustic project, but I think that he has too much talent not to make something out of this.

Check out his bandcamp page for his music, or stream his EP below:

He also has an electronic project called Port Vell that isn’t too shy from The Postal Service. Check out his EP for that at it’s bandcamp.

We Are Scientists always have entertaining music videos. Their latest one is for current single “I Don’t Bite”. It shows various sequences of the bands journey in the back seat of a car, some with blood (I think I own Kieth’s dirty shirt), and some as drag queens. Pure entertainment, as usual.

Weezer – Ruling Me + Unspoken

By Will, September 10th 2010 — with 4 comments

So, right now I’m enjoying Weezer’s new album Hurley. It’s no Blue/Pink or even Green for that matter, but it didn’t fail like everyone wanted expected it to. I still got to digest it more fully, but I think Weezer have made their best record in many years.

Where Red and Raditude felt like sloppy albums with a couple of memorable moments, Hurley seems to be a more cohesive album. It flows, and the songs seem more natural for the boys. It sounds to me like the band is more comfortable on indie label Epitaph, returning to natural songwriting. I mean, I doubt “I Can’t Stop Partying” was a true heart to heart moment for the guys.

“Ruling Me”, the 2nd song off the album really caught my ear immediately. It has that vintage honest feel that the old Weezer used to give me. “Unspoken” may just be the closest thing to a Pinkerton cut that Weezer have given us. When everything breaks down at the 2:12 mark with that classic Weezer guitar jam crunch, it makes me feel good for sticking around with Weezer through this last decade. I knew they still had it in them.

Stream both of these bad boys below. The whole thing is streaming on myspace as well:

The Strokes Playing NYC This Sunday

By Will, September 10th 2010 — with 1 comment

And guess what, you can’t go. Ice cold guys…ice cold.

Our beloved nyc heroes have announced plans to play NYC this Sunday night, but it’s an invite only show. It’s for Tommy Hilfiger’s 25th Anniversary Party, which is being held at The Metropolitan Opera House.

I saw the announcement and jumped in joy because I have yet to see The Strokes somehow. They’ve #1 on my must see bands for years. I was happy until I read the part where it was invite only for 1,200 people. The NY Times had this pretty little description of the said invitations:

Some 1,200 invitations, which resembled a box of ivy, were sent out….the party’s theme: “rock ‘n’ roll meets prepster

It’s pretty rough to see them do this to their (hometown) fans, who have waited many years to see them play. Hopefully their will be another show announced soon. A commenter on Brooklyn Vegan thinks that this could possibly be another “secret” show.

Here’s to hoping that they announce another show that is open to the public. I’d drive down from Binghamton instantly, without any hesitation.

P.S. if there is anyone who can somehow get me into this gig, I’m certainly listening! :-D

[music video] Weezer – Memories

By Will, September 9th 2010

Weezer would film a music video with all the bros from Jackass..and…it’s awesome.

“Memories” isn’t one of the best songs on Hurley (which is the best Weezer has sounded in many years), but this video rules. Jackass is always a riot, and this video shows the gang singing and messing along with Weezer. It’s a good watch.

The video was filmed with old fashioned super 8 camera, going along with the nostalgic aesthetic of the song.

Watch it below, via Spin:

Hurley is available to stream in its entirety over at their myspace. Check it out, and let me know what you think in the comments or on twitter.

My girl Brie Stoner has just released a new video for her August acoustic video series, this time for the song “Part Time Believer”. Brie’s doing acoustic videos for each of the five songs on her EP, Delicate Hour.

The performance is not shy from being called breathtaking. She plays the song with the help of her family & friends. It’s a magical moment. Watch it below:

The Delicate Hour EP is one of the best EP’s that you’re going to find all year. It’s filled with plenty of great moments like “Part Time Believer” that make it more than worthwhile. You can’t help but fall in love with this girl.

You can buy it right now at iTunes. Check out her past video for “Together Forever” here.

[mp3] Weekend – Coma Summer

By Will, September 9th 2010

Remember Weekend? I posted about them earlier this year. I had high hopes for them. Their debut album Sports is going to be released on November 9th via Slumberland Records, and I expect it to live up to those high hopes.

The band have just released the album version of “Coma Summer” and you can take a listen to the reverb happy song that sounds like an endless drive back to school after a summer that you don’t want to end. It’s captured the feeling of longing for those care free months. I want them back.

[mp3]: Heavy Hawaii – Teen Angel

By Will, September 9th 2010

San Diego’s Heavy Hawaii are releasing their debut EP on the wonderful Southern California label Art Fag. “Teen Angel” one of the songs from the EP is being offered as a free mp3 download, and you need this bad boy. It’s a feel good song stuck on a lazy hazy path, with no intention of changing. Delicious California melodies drenched in appropriate lo-fi. Good sounds.

The 12″ EP will be on colored vinyl that’s limited to 1000 copies. Head to AF for more.
