Vermillion Club – Odd

By Will, September 23rd 2010 — with 6 comments

Vermillion Club consists of Dylan Campbell and Zeno Pittarelli, two dudes who attend Binghamton University with me. They formed this year and have just released their first single “Odd”. It’s quite lovely.

“Odd” is packed to the brim with lush harmonies. I can hear a bit of Sufjan Stevens in there, and it’s not just from the vocals. There are many good sounds coming out of Vermillion Club. Your gonna love them. It’s amazing to hear such talented work coming out of two kids who I’m going to school with.

Stream/Download it below:

“Odd” will be on their debut album Home. If you head to their myspace you can hear a preview of the album.

[video] Weezer – Perfect Situation (Feat. Jorge Garcia/Hurley from LOST)

By Will, September 23rd 2010 — with 2 comments

This is just too much awesome for me to handle. Jorge Garcia, a.k.a. Hurley from Lost came out to perform with Weezer during “Perfect Situation” this past Tuesday night at a special AXE show in Hollywood.

Big guy can actually hold his own up there.

Watch it below:

Woah this cover that Frightened Rabbit did is blowing my mind right about now. It’s a cover of The Philistines Jr.’s “My Brother Tom, The Green Beret”. It shows a side of them that I haven’t heard before. Scott’s vocals hit a warm baritone that I’m digging the hell out of. The Joy Division-esque percussion and jangly guitars do the original plenty of justice.

The cover is taken from If a Lot of Bands Play in the Woods…? , a compilation cover albums that will accompany The Philistines Jr.’s new album. The National, Jónsi, Mercury Rev, Tokyo Police Club and Tapes N’ Tapes are also featured on it.

[music video] Animal Collective – Bluish

By Will, September 22nd 2010

Animal Collective have made a music video for “Bluish”. They’ve practically made a video for every song on the album. Hey, I’m not complaining, “Bluish” was my favorite song of last year.

The video is very Animal Collective (trippy), and very Blue. MPP still has a presence, even though it came out in Junary 2009. Quite a feat in our quick, quick, bang, bang, digital age.

Klaxons @ Maxwells (9/19/2010)

By Will, September 22nd 2010 — with 1 comment

I have made it a goal of mine to see Klaxons ever since they first toured America, which was way back in 2007. I have long been a fan of theirs. I still remember my first time listening to “Gravity’s Rainbow”, “The Bouncer”, and “Atlantis to Interzone”. It was unlike anything else my young(er) ears had ever heard before, and I was straight up addicted. However I couldn’t get into their show @ Bowery Ballroom because of age restrictions, and I have been waiting for them to return to America ever since.

I finally got my chance this past Sunday, when the band stopped at Maxwells in Hoboken, NJ. I drove down from Binghamton for the day and made the drive. No way I was missing them, again. I really enjoyed the intimate space of Maxwells. It couldn’t have fit more than 200 people. It was so small, the bands had to enter through the crowd. Yes, the UK gods Klaxons walked through the crowd to get to the stage.

Los Angelas two piece Baby Monster opened the show, delighting my ears with ethereal synth gems. I was greatly impressed with their set, and wanted to know more about them. I met the band’s Danny Sternbaum & Marty Larson after the show and was surprised to find out that that they only had singles out. Keep an eye out for these guys, they got a lot going on. Big things are headed their way, for sure.

Klaxons entered the stage in dramatic fashion. It was their first US show in a long time, and we all got to watch them kick off their tour. Their set literally flip flopped from Myths Of The Near Future cuts to Surfing The Void songs. It was a smart way to introduce the songs to fans who may have been hearing them for the first time. It made it even more satisfying once they got to the big cuts from their first album. The crowd seemed to agree with this, radiating the joy that the songs brought all of us over the last part of this decade.

The band was loud, confident, and very glad to be here. They thanked us all for coming out, and making them feel welcome once again in America. The band played a tight set that edged more towards a rock show rather than the “new rave” title that had been branded on them for so long. The band still gave us plenty of reason to dance, and boy did we.

I briefly spoke to all of the guys after the show and was glad to find out that they were warm and receptive, even taking photos with everyone who asked. That Mercury Prize couldn’t have gone to a better act. That’s for sure.

Here are the photos I took with the guys:

Belle and Sebastian – I Want The World To Stop

By Will, September 21st 2010 — with 2 comments

Hey world. It’s nice to write to you guys again. For some reason it feels like it’s been a long time. I had a loooong weekend filled with plenty of good, and some bad. But fuck the bad, the good was good, and often, great. I went home Sunday to catch Klaxons, and it was phenomenal. That post is coming soon.

Belle and Sebastian leaked this weekend and every indie kid in the world rejoiced to the sweet, sweet, heavens above. I know I did. To be honest, I played “I Want The World To Stop” first, before even giving the whole album a solid run through. Why did I do that? Well, I have been dying to hear it ever since I heard them play it on their TV show. It left quite an impression on me when I first heard it, and I wanted to see if the recorded version did it justice.

It did. It’s phenomenal. Deep dirty bass, gorgous vocals, harmonies that would glaze over and clean the dirtiest streets up here in Binghamton. When Belle and Sebastian are on, boy are they, on!

I can’t stop listening to this song, and I wanted you all to get a glimpse of this treasure. It’s stream only. It’s off their new album Belle And Sebastian Write About Love which drops on October 12th via Matador.

Purchase links for the album are posted after the stream below:

Blackbird Blackbird – Float On (Modest Mouse Cover)

I came home for the day just to see Klaxons show @ Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ tonight.

I don’t got too much time to post, but I wanted to share this amazing cover that the hardworking Blackbird Blackbird did of Modest Mouse’s “Float On”. He transformed it into a dreamy, synthed out delight that gives the song a whole new feel. He took the task of “covering” to the highest level.

Download the cover below. I found it via Wild Tonic.

Blackbird Blackbird is no stranger to WAWSTSF. Check out my previous posts, here.

Kanye dropped his latest G.O.O.D. Friday treat a little later than expected, but better late than never. He delivered “Lord Lord Lord” with the backup of Mos Def, Swizz Beatz, Raekwon & Charlie Wilson. Quite a cast, eh

“Lord Lord Lord” is a seven an a half minute epic that broods and broods along a joyride ready beat. Every spits their heart out, giving us a delightful treat that should help make the weekend pains a little less painful. Once again it sounds like Kanye is treading towards his earlier sound, which I am all for.

[mp3] The Thermals – Never Listen To Me

By Will, September 17th 2010 — with 1 comment

The Thermals 2nd single off their new album Personal Life is “Never Listen To Me”. It’s a garage rock delight that’s as fully fleshed as they come these days. The Thermals never do disappoint, now do they?

The band is giving it away as a free mp3 download. Grab it below:

The official 7″ comes out on October 19th via Kill Rock Stars. The single is backed by b-side “There Is Always a Reason”.

[video] Friends Forever (Smith Westerns & Girls)

By Will, September 16th 2010 — with 3 comments

Fans of Girls & Smith Westerns will adore the short film Friends Forever that Ryan McGinley recently posted. It features clips of both Girls & Smith Westerns set’s at this years pitchfork festival.

It’s wonderfully shot, and edited with some great live audio. I have had the pleasure of catching Smith Westerns live before, and this is pretty accurate. The Smith Westerns song that they use in their clips is a new song called “All Die Young”. You can watch the bands performance from Bowery Ballroom this past august here (I embeded it below as well). If you notice a tall dude in front, that’s me.

Watch the wonderful video here, or just watch below:
