Forest Family Records is set to release it’s next (most excellent) vinyl release. This time it will be their first 12″ EP vinyl release for the mysterious Grecian band, Keep Shelly In Athens. The 6 song EP, In Love With Dusk, will be limited to 500 pressings, and will be mailed out in late November/early December. You can pre-order it now.

Right now you can download two fantastic songs of the EP. The first is the 80s synthed out “Running Out Of You”. The second is the Balearic inspired jam, “Fokionos Negri Street” which inspires feelings of summer passion. As I ponder in this Binghamton cold, I would love to visit this street right about now

Keep Shelly In Athens create music that sounds like deep dark confessions from the unknown. Not a bad companion for your spooky Halloween night tonight. Grab both below:

Band To Watch In 2011: Sports

By Will, October 31st 2010 — with 4 comments

Sports “To Catch A Thief” is quickly rising as one of my favorite songs of 2010. Find out why. The Seattle band has continued to impress me with equally impressive demos that are making a case for them as a band to watch in 2011.

“Heatwave” is a mind bending song that hit you with throbbing bass and effects that are too good for this world. Throw in the haunted vocals, and you got a new friend for this Halloween. “Every World Is A World Of Your Own” hits hard with layers of colorful synths and 80s new wave vocals. It’s a delicious song that is something to get excited about. Throw in “Prizefighter” and you got a song that sounds like a journey through layers of a cool dark night.

These guys have me hooked, and these are just their demos. They have a fresh and original sound that sounds like 80′s new wave, but very modern at the same. It’s incredible just how perfectly the bands singer matches their sound.

I have no problem calling them a band to watch in 2011.

Time to get excited:

[CMJ] DOM @ Stereogun Showcase (10/20/2010)

By Will, October 30th 2010

I jumped over to DOM after Tamaryn and caught a set filled with Strokes-esque guitar jams. A lot different live than on their EP. They almost sounded like Girls backed with The Strokes. Not a bad combination at all.

I met up with their lead singer later on in the week and he said there were a lot of technical problems with the set. Which explain why they ended their set without playing some stuff.

Leilos Mashups

By Will, October 30th 2010 — with 12 comments

Leilos has some really fun party ready mashups at his bandcamp. It’s stream only, so I embedded some really cool cuts that he has below:

(Lil Wayne x Vampire Weekend)

(Phoenix x Sunz of Man)

On Wednesday I hit up Stereogum’s/PopGun’s “Stereogun” showcase at Santos Party House, once again. The first set I caught was of the adorable duo Houses. It was actually their first live performance ever, so I was pretty lucky on that. They recently released their debut album All Night on Lefese Records. They played a shy set full of tunes from the album. They sounded good, but you could tell it was their first live show, and they weren’t afraid to point that out.

Easiest comparison is to The Postal Service. Their songs are emotional layered pieces of electronic pop that will tug a few heart strings. Gonna have to let the album play while the leaves continue to fall. It’s rather good timing.

All Tuesday I heard people talking about seeing a band from Boston called Bad Rabbits. I hadn’t heard of them previously, but enough people were mentioning there name, so I decided to check out their show at Santos Party House. I don’t regret the decision one bit. They are just flat out fun. A mix of 80s funk, soul, and r&b with a rock and roll sound, rolled up in one irresistible ball. The crowd at Santos ate them up, and so did I. They bring the party with them, so be sure to catch them if you get a chance.

They have their debut EP Stick Up Kids available for free download here. It’s a fun listen as well, but this is a band that I’d rather see live anyday. With that said, this is a nice little EP that may just be your next party playlist. These guys have a nice little cult following already, but chances are, these guys are going to explode within the next year.

I posted the title track from the EP, below:

I went to Santos Party House to check out a band called Bad Rabbits, and Cody B. Ware a local rapper from Jamaica, Queens played before them. His sound was a bit of rap and rock blended together, with a little funk served on the side. They had a lot of energy, and some good hooks. He just released his debut EP The Blue Demon, not too long ago. Head to his myspace to grab a free download.

Check out a cool song from it below:
