Surfer Blood have come a long way since I saw them for the first time at Market Hotel. I saw them at Siren over the summer and they seemed to find a way to improve. Well at last week’s free CMJ performance for MTV at The Studio at Webster Hall, Surfer Blood once again sounded even better to me. This is a band that continues to grow as a live band, sounding tighter, fuller, and richer. Their songs speak for themselves, but it’s always good to see a band improve time and time again. Surfer Blood’s time is now and they are surely taking advantage of it.

They played all of their classics including the wonderful non-album cut “I’m Not Ready”. They came back after “forgetting” to play “Swim” and ended the night in dramatic fashion with bubbles floating out to the crowd in full force.
