[new] Holy Ghost! – Do It Again!

By Will, January 12th 2011 — with 2 comments

I was impressed with what I saw from Holy Ghost! when they opened for LCD Soundsystem at Terminal 5 last summer. I hadn’t checked into them since, but that’s ok, as I just learned that they got an album on the way.

Their s/t debut album is coming out on DFA on April 5th. The first single from the album, “Do It Again!” is available to download for free from the band’s site. It’s a fantastic disco-electronic track. Makes sense that DFA gave these guys their stamp of approval.

If you’re in NYC on February 2nd, head to Mercury Lounge to catch the band performing the album in its entirety.

The Forms – Fire To The Ground (Feat. Matt Berninger)

By Will, January 12th 2011 — with 1 comment

Here’s a new song from NYC locals, The Forms. It’s called “Fire To The Ground” and it features The National’s Matt Berninger on vocals. It’s odd to hear him singing on someone elses track, but the song actually sounds a bit National-like. It’s taken from The Forms new EP, Derealization.

Download it below:

Here’s an old favorite of mine from their 2nd album, The Forms:

La Sera – Devils Hearts Grow Gold

By Will, January 12th 2011

La Sera is the side-project of Vivian Girls member Katy Goodman. She’s releasing her s/t debut album on February 15 via Hardly Art. Here’s a really nice track from the album called, “Devils Hearts Grow Gold”, that she’s giving away for free. If the whole album consists of songs of this caliber, it will be must have for this summer.

While we’re at it, here’s “Never Come Around”, a song previously given away from the album:

[new] Best Coast – When You Wake Up

By Will, January 12th 2011

We already heard Wavves’ contribution to Summer Is Forever, the split tour 7″ that he is releasing with Best Coast. Now we have Best Coast’s contribuation: “When You Wake Up”. It’s a chilled out lo-fi rocker that we’ve come to expect from Best Coast, and it sounds good even if there’s nearly a foot of snow outside right now. Nothing too special, but it’s a good listen.

Okkervil River Announces New Album: I Am Very Far

By Will, January 12th 2011 — with 2 comments

It’s been three years since the last Okkervil River album. On May 10th that all changes when the band releases I Am Very Far via Jagjaguwar. It features 11 new songs, produced and arranged by frontman Will Sheff in Austin, New York City and Connecticut.

On Monday, the band performed a new song called “Wake and Be Fine” on Jimmy Fallon. They got help from A.C. Newman (New Pornographers) and members of The Roots. Check out that performance, below via The Audio Perv:

Last night Steven Colbert brought on both The Black Keys & Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, to compete in a “sell-off” to see who had more songs used commercials. It was his way of deciding who would get his Grammy vote for best alternative album.

This way beyond hilarious. Both of them were great sports, and were pretty funny. Best part of the whole skit?: When Patrick Carney called Ezra, Vampire.
