Battles Announce New Album: Gloss Drop

By Will, February 28th 2011 — with 2 comments

Finally. That’s all I can say to the announcement of Battles new album, Gloss Drop. The long awaited followup to their fantastic debut album Mirrored will drop on June 7th via Warp Records.

It’s their first album as a trio, which means it’s also the first without Tyondai Braxton. However, the band has songs with the likes of Gary Numan (yes, Gary Numan), and Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead to help out with guest vocals on some songs. Who else can’t wait to hear the Numan featured song: “My Machines”?

I can’t wait to see what these guys are able to do on album two. I trust that they will continue to blow minds.

[new] The Strokes – You’re So Right

By Will, February 28th 2011 — with 1 comment

Woah, this new Strokes song is going to have people talking. First single “Under Cover Of Darkness” reminded people of the good old days, and it got a very positive response.

A new song from Angles called “You’re So Right” has surfaced, and it’s a lot different than anything that the band has done so far. Julian’s vocals sound dark and haunted. This song’s mood is pretty dark overall. I was really caught off guard at how different it sounded from the traditional Strokes sound, but after a few listens it actually is very them, just hitting at a darker mood.

At some points, Julian reminded me of Paul Banks of Interpol (in a great way!). This is atmospheric and moody, and I’m loving the hell out of it. Check out that distorted guitar near the end. The band are throwing together some new ideas, and it seems like Angles is going to be a lot different than any of us could ever imagine – in a great way.

[new] Jamie xx – Beat For

By Will, February 28th 2011

Jamie xx is back with a new jam for us to obsess over.

“Beat For” is the delicious new piece, and it’s quite a trip. It’s an imaginative journey through a colorful world of dubstep that is everybit as thrilling as it is emotional. I really am impressed with what Jamie can do, and now see that his talents in the xx are way undervalued. This kid has got a lot going for him.

“Beat For” should tide us over until we get some new music from The XX. I hope we get some more jams like this. This is really doing it for me.

Thanks to the always wonderful Disco Naïveté for posting an mp3:

Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang is Raekwon’s new album that will be released on March 8th. We previously heard the album’s title track, and now we have another new song to feast on.

“Molasses” is the latest song to hit the web, and it doesn’t disappoint. It features his main man Ghostface Killah and Rick Ross on guest vocals. I don’t know about you, but this is one of the slickest beats to come out this year. Sure the years early, but I don’t think it’s every too early to praise a new Raekwon song. It does have a early 90′s feel to it after all. Can’t complain about that.

Check it out below:

[new] Wavves – Horse Shoes

By Will, February 28th 2011 — with 1 comment

Last week Nathan Williams of Wavves posted a link on his blog of an mp3 of a new song called “Horse Shoes” that fans can download, free of charge.

I can’t believe that he’s giving this away for a free download. Personally, I think this is one of the best songs he’s ever released. It’s so diverse and different from a lot of his stuff. A lot of fresh ideas that blend together effectively.

I’m not complaining, free is for me, but this song deserves a worthy release. Grab it below:

[new] The Cool Kids – Bundle Up

By Will, February 28th 2011

I didn’t realize The Cool Kids have yet to release their debut album. Well, Green Label Sound decided that it was about time to do that. This spring the Mountain Dew imprint will release the bands debut album, When Fish Ride Bicycles.

The label is releasing “Bundle Up”, a song from the album, for free download. If you liked what you heard on their The Bake Sale EP, you’ll eat this up as well.
