Live Blogging My First Listen To Radiohead’s The King Of Limbs

By Will, February 18th 2011 — with 2 comments

Alright so I finally have a chance to listen to Radiohead’s new album, The King Of Limbs. Live blogging has gone over well with (most) of you guys, so I figure Radiohead is a must. Remember this is not a review. I think a lot of people make the mistake. Rather, this is just a way for me to share my first initial impressions of the album. It’s literally like you’re reading my thoughts as I dive deep into the musical waters of Radiohead. Mind blowing, eh?

If you haven’t bought the album, head here to do so and you’ll get the mp3 download right away.

Alright, let’s get this started:

1. Bloom – Some lush piano gets us started, and then we are hit with scrambled mixed percussion. Thom enters the mix in his usual epic way. This is a dark cloudy song that sounds like an acid trip through a dark barren landscape filled with fog. A little bit of a dubstep influence? Some horns…Sweet. There’s a lot of little details fidgiting around in the background. If you’re not careful, you may miss it. Excellent opener. 12:08 p.m.

2. Morning Mr Magpie -  Woah, the juxtaposition of all the instruments creates quite a ethereal sound. You got to wonder how amazing this would be to hear live. Don’t think I’ll be able to shake those riffs out of my head all day. 12:14 p.m.

3. Little By Little – I feel like there’s a little bit of each album tucked away in this song. Really dark, sinister tone to this. Sort of what Radiohead does best.

“I’m such a tease and you’re such a filrt”

Oh yes 12:18 p.m.

4. Feral – Stars with a funky drum beat, very Radiohead. Almost 15 Step like. Woah, some trippy dubstep influenced vocals that sound like Burial. I can’t imagine how many people are going to get absolutely stoned and jut drown out to this. I’m really impressed with this song. They really went out to left field here, and I think they earned quite a result. Ghostly vocals and a deep throbbing bassline. This may be may favorite so far (got a long way to go though). 12:22 p.m.

5. Lotus Flower – Wow. There’s quite a vibe going here. Now it makes sense why they released this as the first music video. I could fumble around a lot of fancy adjectives but this song is just pure and full of beauty. Thom’s vocals hit a magical stride. There’s a perfect balance of everything here. All the right elements. Phil Selway is the unsung hero here. His drumming keeps quite a steady pace. You got to tip your cap.

This and Feral make a incredible combo. Both are front runners for my favorite at the moment. 12:28 p.m.

6. Codex – Starts out with just Thom and the piano. Pretty fitting placement for a ballad. Very nice track. I think I’ll appreciate this more upon further listens. 12:32 p.m.

7. Give Up The Ghost – Ghostly vocals from Thom kick things off, and then are very Neil Young-like feeling hit me. Alright, maybe just for a moment. Thom’s vocals at around 2:45-3:05 gave me chills. There’s a ton of emotion packed into this song, and it may hit you harder than you’d expect.

8. Separator – Last song on the album. Didn’t absorb it enoguh the first listen but it came fully realized on the 2nd. Does have a finishing feel to it.

That went by real fast. This is definitely their shortest album yet. There’s a lot of stuff to love about this album. There’s also a lot to revisit and try to fully digest. I’m home right now, and my good speakers are back at school, so I can’t blast it quite yet. I think Radiohead have done it again folks. You’re going to have to keep playing this to fully get it, just like all Radiohead albums.

Radiohead have pushed up the release of their new album, The King Of Limbs, releasing it early this morning. This is a surprise, as the album was supposed to come out tomorrow. You got to love Radiohead.

[video] Tyler The Creator – Sandwiches (Live On Jimmy Fallon)

By Will, February 17th 2011 — with 2 comments

Tyler The Creator just blew my mind a little bit on Jimmy Fallon. He absolutely nailed his live television debut, proving that he is above and beyond all of this hype. It’s A Rap Rogo was 100% right about him. I’m really enjoying what he brings the table, and I can’t wait to see him rise to the top.

He and Hodgy Beats of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, performed “Sandwiches” just a few minutes ago, and we already have the video for you to watch thanks to Rogo. Check it out, and jump on aboard the bandwagon:

Check Out A New Radiohead Press Photo

By Will, February 15th 2011 — with 1 comment

Check out this new press photo of Radiohead that atease shared with us today. It’s a artsy black and white photo of the band in the woods. If this photo represents the mood of The King of Limbs, we could be looking at a pretty dark album.

Guess we’ll find out on Saturday.

The Strokes Playing MSG On April 1st

By Will, February 15th 2011

That’s what their twitter would lead you to believe. The band’s twitter account has April 1st MSG posted. So it looks like the band has finally announced their first official NYC comeback show. It happens one day before LCD Soundsystem’s “Farewell Show’. Can you say epic two days at MSG.

We are still waiting for an official announcement but I’m pretty sure this is happening.

Let’s hope that tickets are easier to get than LCD. I have a feeling things may be just as crazy though….

[mp3]: The Strokes – Under Cover Of Darkness (Alternate Fan Version)

By Will, February 15th 2011 — with 1 comment

My friends Nic (also known as Dusk Warrior to some of you) tweeted me this pretty cool altered version of The Strokes “Under Cover Of Darkness”. It was slowed down by a fan to accommodate Julian’s “normal tone”.

It actually works pretty well. Watch it below, and grab a mp3 I ripped if you really like it:

[new] Wolf Gang – Dancing With The Devil

By Will, February 15th 2011

Wolf Gang is back with a new single called “Dancing With The Devil”. It’s going to be released on March 21st. It will also be included on his debut album, Suego Faults, due later this year.

“Dancing With The Devil” is just as infectious as “Lions In Cages”, one of my favorite songs from 2010. It’s a little bit more on the dramatic/theatrical side, but that only makes it more interesting.

Wolf Gang is making interesting music, and I think it’s a refreshing blend of music

There’s an mp3 waiting for you ovwer at Pigeons & Planes.

The Steelwells Need Your Help

By Will, February 15th 2011

The Steelwells captured my heart with their pop masterpiece “El Capitan”. Their EP, Shallow On The Draft, is doing all kinds of wondrous things for me. They are certainly a promising band, and I’m not alone.

They have been selected among 15 other bands to compete for a chance to be featured on the cover of Rollingstone on the August 5th Issue. Fans get to choose who wins. Fans get to vote on each band at Rolling Stone’s website. The bands will get narrowed down until there are only two left, and those two bands battle for the grand prize live at Bonnaroo.

The Steelwells are definitely my band of choice for this, and if you liked “El Capitan”, you should really vote for them. Head to Rolling Stone now and give them a 5 star rating. Or, use this widget below to vote for The Steelwells:

Here’s the music video for “El Capitan” if you need a quick refresher:

This would be a huge opportunity for the band. I wish them the best of luck.
