[mp3]: The Strokes – Under Cover Of Darkness

By Will, February 9th 2011 — with 8 comments

I’ve been beyond eager to hear the Strokes new single “Under Cover Of Darkness” ever since it’s 30 second clip premiered. The band premiered the song today, giving it away for free on their site.

I’ve had a few listens now, and it’s everything that I hoped it would be. It sounds like the band has effectively combined the best parts of all of their different sounds. It’s definitely sounding a lot more like their earlier days, which is something most Strokes fans will be happy to hear.

The guitars come blazin’ tuned to the perfect degree, with some pretty great riffs. Julian does some of his signature vocals tricks. There’s even vocal harmonies from some of the band (sounds like Albert) giving us something fresh.

This is quite a comeback single. Welcome back guys.

Just came across a Young Empires remix of Two Door Cinema Club’s “What You Know”. As you can expect, the combination of these two brilliant dance-rock artists creates something pretty awesome.

This remix uses what works with “What You Know” and adds some chill elements that give it a dreamy effect. It’s a nice listen. Download it below;:

Take a trip through the mind of Tony Castles, and watch the music video for their song “Black Girls in Dresses”. It’s a song that will take you away to a better place. It features hazy instrumentation and soothing vocals that combine to put me at ease. The music video is pretty fitting as well.

“Black Girls in Dresses” is taken from their No Service EP due March 15th via Famous Class Records.

Beaulieu Porch – The Colour 55

By Will, February 9th 2011

Beaulieu Porch is the project of Salisbury, UK native, Simon Berry. His label, The Peppermint Hill, sent me his new single “The Colour 55″, and it left quite a first impression. It’s heavy on the psychedelic rock side. He sings with hazy vocals that are eerily John Lennon-like. It’s throwback formula is a winning one.

Light some incense and let “The Colour 55″ relax your mind. Simon has hit his stride. The label also sent over “Raspberry Babies”, a “phantom track” that is included on the 7″ release. They’re letting me post both for download below:

[video] Mixed Tapes: Teddy Blanks

By Will, February 9th 2011 — with 1 comment

Mixed Tapes is a new web series from director Michael Melamedoff (Director of Weakness) which highlights independent artists in New York City. He gives us a closer look at the artists, and then asks them to play a cover.

I just watched their newest video of Teddy Blanks. It was a great watch. This is a great little series that deserves some attention. Check it out:

[new] tUnE-yArDs – Bizzness

By Will, February 8th 2011 — with 1 comment

Frank from Listen Before You Buy was all on top of this new tUnE-yArDs song called “Bizzness”. Zane Lowe played it the other day and it slipped under everyone’s radar. Frank has a radio rip of it up, and now we can all listen.

“Bizzness” is one of those songs that has a perfect balance of quirky and pop. There’s a myriad of different influences all over this song, and they all add up to create something very unique. Some parts remind me of TV On The Radio. Might be the horns or the vocals. Definitely a good thing, though.

It’s taken from her new album w h o k i l l, which comes out April 19th via 4AD. Stream a radio rip of “Bizzness” below via Listen Before You Buy.

[mp3]: Forbidden Friends – Tiny Hands

By Will, February 8th 2011

Forbidden Friends is the solo project of Hutch Harris, lead singer of The Thermals. He is releasing his debut 7″ single “Tiny Hands” on March 15th via Kill Rock Stars. It’s backed with the b-side, “For You”

“Tiny Hands” sounds like a looser version of The Thermals. Seems like he is just trying to have fun and make some music that he probably couldn’t under The Thermals name.

It’s available as a free mp3. Grab it below:

[new] The Raveonettes – Forget That You’re Young

By Will, February 8th 2011 — with 2 comments

On April 5th, The Raveonettes will release their new album Raven In The Grave via Vice Records.

The band has given us an early taste of the album. They made first single, “Forget That You’re Young” available for free mp3 download. It’s a song lost in deep in lush wavves giving us a feeling of tranquility. The band have toned down the fuzz rock that they’ve made trademar, and gave us a ballad of sorts. It works damn well.

Download it below:

The Vaccines Release Digital EP

By Will, February 8th 2011

Today The Vaccines released a digital EP on iTunes, simply titled The Vaccines EP. It features “Post Break-Up Sex”, “Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra)” and “Blow It Up”. So it’s nothing new, but it’s a good starting point for those who haven’t listened to the band yet.

Head to iTunes to buy the EP now.

Tomorrow The Strokes will give away their new single, “Under Cover Of Darkness”, as a free download on their site. The song will premiere on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show tomorrow, and the band knows that a radio rip is bound to happen. So they figured they may as well get the right version to the people.

So at around 2:35 tomorrow, the song will be available to download from the band for free. It will be up for about two days. I can’t wait…
