Archive for March, 2011

It’s been about a year since I’ve been celebrating the youthful anthems of Two Door Cinema Club. The band has grown incredibly since then.

I remember seeing people on my facebook news feed attending their show at Terminal 5 in January who I never would have expected to like the band. That is to say, Two Door Cinema Club have become a pretty big name. It’s no surprise, they write big songs that are meant to be appreciated by a wide audience. A lot of the more uptight types tend to toss them under the mat for some reason, and I really don’t understand it. The boys write youthful songs that have more hooks than one can handle.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the band did a Daytrotter session, because it meant we’d get to hear some songs in acoustic form. The band didn’t disappoint. They re-arranged the songs to fit a more delicate mold, and the result is something refreshing, and impossible to dislike. A comment by Daytrotter user “zkerker” puts it best:

“If this doesn’t put a smile on your face I suspect you are already dead!”

Well said, zkerker.

If you’re a fan of the band, these songs are essential to your collection:

[mp3]: Two Door Cinema Club – I Can Talk (Daytrotter Session)

Panda Bear – The Preakness

By Will, March 26th 2011

If you pre-ordered any of the shoes that Animal Collective designed for Keep, you will receive a tape with a new song from each band member. Panda Bear’s contribution “The Preakness” has hit the net and it’s a delightful listen. Featuring focused vocals that flirt with it’s dreamed up instrumentals, it’s a magical liste.

In other words, it’s a great Panda Bear track, and you can stream it below:

Hear 3 New/Old Wavves Demos

By Will, March 25th 2011

Two days ago Wavves posted three demos that he recorded in 2009 with Zach Hill. The three songs are “Goldy Lox”, “Hula Hoop” and “Glued”. All three are rockin’ garage jams that sound like a summertime statement. All three are incredibly strong tracks that deserve to be included on a future release. If not, that’s ok too, because these are quite good as they stand.

Stream all three below via Nathan’s Ghost Ramp Blog:

[new] Gomez – Options

By Will, March 25th 2011

Gomez have a new album called Whatever’s On Your Mind that will be released in June. “Options”, a song from the album, is available to download for free. It’s a rocking track with a country tang hidden below. There are glorious horns, and vocal harmonies. This is a nice little track that comes off as refreshing.

Gomez are back, and they brought good tunes with them:

A New Look, A New Era

By Will, March 25th 2011 — with 3 comments

If you’re reading this, you probably have noticed that the site looks a little bit different. That’s because this is the brand new layout that Matt Kempster from FRXNT has made for me. We wanted to give it a sleek clean look, while also maintaining the simplicity of the previous layout that so many of us (including myself) fell in love with.

We All Want Someone is a place where I will always put content first. The music and my words will always be my first priority. All the flashy stuff can be left for other blogs. I’m not that crafty anyway. I love sharing the music that I like with the world. That has always been my first priority, and it always will be. I believe that’s the reason you guys keep coming back.

In July, it will be three years since I first started this thing. Where has the time gone, right? It truly seems like it was just yesterday that I was contemplating whether it would be worth it or not to start my own music blog. I knew my friends would probably check it out once and a while, but I didn’t think anyone else would.

I started We All Want Someone in order to share music with my friends. Secretly I wanted to spread my love for music with a larger audience, just like blogs like Gorilla Vs Bear, You Ain’t No Picasso, Pretty Much Amazing, all blogs that I followed prior to starting my own. I wanted to have that connection with people. I shared music with my friends in real life, why not share it with even more people? I thought it would be awesome to join them as a fellow music blogger, but I was worried people would never read.

I was wrong. You guys made it possible, and I can’t thank you enough. I know it’s cliché, but it’s the truth. This blog would be nothing without you. Your comments, your interactions with me on twitter/facebook, your shoutbox comments, and your personal e-mails, don’t go unnoticed. They keep me aware that people are reading, and that people care enough to write. Without you, I would have lost all desire to keep this thing running a long time ago. You could be at hundreds of other music blogs, but you guys visit me. I can’t show my appreciation enough.

So this new layout stands for all that has happened since July 2008. I’m a much different person than I was three years ago, and this new layout represents that change. I got a lot of great stuff ahead of us in the future, and I hope you will continue to be a part of this amazing ride. The heart of this blog will stay the same, even if it has a new skin to wear.

This site has seriously changed my life. Thanks for everything, and I hope you enjoy We All Want Someone To Shout For, Version 2.0.

Here’s a song that I need to post. It’s only right:

[mp3]: Arctic Monkeys – Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?

James Vincent McMorrow may or may not have been influenced by Jimmy Fallon when he covered Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair”. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was. But, that doesn’t matter.

It’s the song most people loved, or loved to hate last year. One thing’s for sure, whether or not you like to admit it, you know it, and you know it damn well. James Vincent McMorrow decided to give the song a new arrangement, and present it to us as a new package. He takes the pop hit and creates a fragile makeover that transforms it into an entirely different beast. It’s really cool.

You guys aren’t to cool for this one are you? I didn’t think so.

Here’s Jimmy Fallon/Bruce Springsteen’s Cover again, just because it’s so damn awesome:

Introducing: awaken!

By Will, March 25th 2011

awaken! is the musical project of L.A. resident Jesse Rakusin. He sent me his new album Now In Technicolor Light, saying that it’s “meant to heighten awareness, expand consciousness, and sound good.” Now In Technicolor Light, does just that. It’s an eccentric journey through his mind, and we’re all welcome on board.

His songs have a lo-fi/bedroom quality to them them that give them a person kick. awaken! paints his songs with a 50′s/60′s drugged up haze that seems effortless. Soulful melodies are waiting underneath all of the 4 track fuzz, coming to life through Jesse’s passionate delivery. Jessie’s recordings are the sort that benefit from lo-fi recording. It’s as if he’s entered your mind, providing a first hand look at the inner quadrants of his mind. It’s quite a ride.

I posted two of my favorite jams for download below, along with a stream of the entire album. If you like what you hear head to the awaken! bandcamp to download it for free.

[new] Burial – NYC

By Will, March 25th 2011 — with 1 comment

Yesterday we heard “Street Halo” & “Stolen Dog” from Burial’s upcoming “Street Halo” 12″, and now “NYC” has crept online. It’s a seven and a half minute long jam that makes every second count. It breathes cold dark air into your room. It’s a track that takes it time to get you where it’s headed. Slow & steady, playing out like a long subway ride from Brooklyn to Midtown at 4am when you’re already hungover and reaching for your bed.

“NYC” is really speaking to me at 1am. I don’t know how Burial does it. He’s done it yet again. The Street Halo 12″ is one hell of a release.

The Elected – Babyface

By Will, March 24th 2011

The Elected have a new album on the way titled Bury Me In My Rings. It will be released on May 17th via Vagrant Records.

It’s the third album (the first released on Vagrant) from the L.A. based band which is the side project for Blake Sennett & Jason Boesel of Rilo Kiley. Sennett produced and recorded the album. The album described as “a thoughtful and deliberate pop album layered with soulful harmonies”. After listening to a track from the album called “Babyface”, I can assure you that that description is spot on. “Babyface” is loaded with pop hooks and lovely vocal harmonies that are hard to ignore.

“Babyface” is irresistible. You’ll hit replay all night. Take a listen below:
