Snoop Dogg – Sumthin Like This Night (Feat. Gorillaz)

By Will, March 23rd 2011 — with 2 comments

Two Snoop Dogg posts in one day, that’s certainly unlike this blog, right? Fuck it, this is a blog for music I like, and Snoop Dogg has got my attention right now with two solid new songs. I shared “Eyez Closed” with you earlier today. Now I got “Sumthin Like This Night” which features Gorillaz main man Damon Albarn.

“Sumthin Like This Night” definitely has a Plastic Beach vibe. One could have easily mistaken this for a new Gorillaz track.

Snoop’s voice is a perfect fit for the music that Gorillaz make, and this song’s a prime example. Snoop has delivered a winner here. Rap heads and indie fans can both enjoy the hell out of this. This song is actually a perfect spring time jam.

Ian Axel – This Is The New Year

By Will, March 23rd 2011 — with 1 comment

I’m enjoying this song “This Is The New Year” from hot rising New York City artist Ian Axel. He’s experienced a quick rise to fame since MTV’s new show, I Used To Be Fat picked it as it’s theme song. For all you hipster snobs out there, don’t rule the song out because of that. This song has genuine heart and soul, and I don’t think many people can deny that. Ian reminds me a bit of a younger Ben Folds.

This is a song that has potential to be a chart topping hit. It’s well written, has a catchy melody that’s just waiting to be discovered, and it flirts with the dramatic. This is that type of song that you will hear on the radio in a few months and remember when you first discovered it. It’s already clearly been recognized, but I have a feeling that Ian Axel’s rise to fame has only just begun.

“This Is The New Year” has all the qualities of a hit song that will have legs. You will be hearing a lot of it in the next few months. You can’t help but root for a guy like Ian Axel who has clearly worked his ass off to get to this point.

Check out the music video for “This Is The New Year” below:

This new Snoop Dogg song “Eyez Closed” definitely has a Kanye vibe to it. Makes sense since an earlier version with just him and John Legend leaked in January.

‘Ye and John Legend are pretty great on this track, creating a big three that we can actually enjoy. I haven’t been a fan of Snoop’s newer stuff, but this song’s pretty damn cool. I originally listened to the track with interest in only hearing Kanye’s verse, but this entire song’s a lot more solid than I originally believed. Quite catchy.

It’s taken from his new album Doggumentary which comes out March 29th via Priority Records. Check out a mp3 below, via The Fader:

Contest With Tsunami Mobile Application

By Will, March 23rd 2011 — with 2 comments

Tsunami is an iPhone app that plays music from different stations managed by blogs and artists. Anyone can open a station by emailing Tsunami at info@tsunami234.com. If you have an iPhone, be sure to check the app out. They opened one for us, and I got to say, it’s a very neat application. Now they got a contest for all artists/bloggers to check out:

From April 1st through April 30th, Tsunami will be running a competition to see who can create the most popular artist station. Whatever station gets the most hits will be awarded $1,000. To compete, send an email to weallwantsomeone@gmail.com with two music samples, a Twitter ID, and a website/Facebook/SoundCloud link. If your entry is accepted, you’ll become part of the the We All Want Someone team in the competition and we’ll create a station with you.

If you’re a blog or website and want to compete by submitting your own teams for another $500 cash prize, email Tsunami directly at info@tsunami234.com. An updated list of the top 3 blogs and top 5 artists will be posted daily here and at www.tsunami234.com.

Think it through, you can’t go wrong here. Good luck to everyone!

Jamie Woon was listed at number 4 on BBC’s Sound Of 2011 Poll. He’s becoming a big name over seas, but he’s still got plenty to prove to the (usually) tougher American audience. If last night’s performance at Brooklyn’s Glasslands Gallery was any indication of Jamie’s talent, he’s going to be very successful.

By the time he got to play his hypnotic set, most people had already filed out since it was nearly 1am. Those who stuck around (and weren’t talking over his set!!), were lucky enough to witness just how magical Jamie Woon’s live set is. His songs float a sexy boundary between R&B and Electrnic/Dub-Step. He showcased a killer voice, which is sure to make many girls swoon. He crafted his live sound playing around with guitar, vocal loops, and fiddling with electronic nobs. He didn’t just rely on one thing, which was a refreshing change.

His debut album Mirrorwriting doesn’t come out until April 11th, so aside from a few songs, everything that he played was new to me. All his songs were pure with passion, sounding like a man’s plea for love in the lonely quarters of a bedroom. His most notable songs-”Lady Luck”, “Night Air”, and “Blue Truth” were the ones that really dazzled. When he kicked into “Lady Luck” the atmosphere immediately felt different. Same thing with “Night Air”. The rest of his songs were great, but these two are truly in their own class. The girls in attendance sure didn’t hide their admiration for his Justin Timberlake-like vocals. He’s going to have a huge female fan base, if he doesn’t already.

I believe that this was one of Jamie’s first U.S. shows. I can only imagine him improving more and more with each subsequent visit. It’s only a matter of time until Jamie Woon finds a true connection with an audience in the U.S. Once he does, it’s going to be amazing to watch him sore.

I caught the opening sets from both FaltyDL and Mux Mool. FaltyDL spun a cool set with a lot of the best dubstep songs from the past 6 months, according to my dubstep loving friend Oliver. He mixed in stuff from Jamie XX and Radiohead, so there was plenty to enjoy. Mux Mool combines his love for electronic/hip hop, creating a pretty awesome mix. I’m usually not big on electronic DJ/producer types, but both of these guys rocked hard. Call me a fan.

[music video] TV On The Radio – Will Do

By Will, March 22nd 2011 — with 1 comment

TV On The Radio have released a music video for Nine Types Of Light track, “Will Do”. It’s both visually stunning and emotional. It’s clearly hitting on our generations tendency to replace social interaction/feelings with technology.

Friendly Fires new single, “Live Those Days Tonight”, which will be on their newly announced album, Pala , which will drop May 16th via XL Recordings.

“Live Those Days Tonight” is a vibrant & colorful dance album that sounds club ready. If there’s a band that can capture the powerful sound of a night out on the town, it’s Friendly Fires. They deliver once again. This one grooves and chugs away with delightful ease. I think it’s safe to say that Pala is going to be a perfect summer album.

Death Cab For Cutie Announce Tour Dates

By Will, March 22nd 2011 — with 1 comment

Death Cab For Cutie have announced a short date of tour dates to support their new album, Codes and Keys. Starting in May the band will hit up North America, playing small intimate shows. They will be playing NYC’s Bowery Ballroom on June 1st, which just happens to be my favorite venue. It’s going to be tough to get tickets to that show, but it will totally be worth it to see them there. The prospect of seeing a band like Death Cab at an intimate venue like Bowery excites the hell out of me.

The band also announced that they’re releasing a live dvd called Live at the Mt. Baker Theatre, featuring live performances that the band played it Bellingham, Washington. It comes out the same day as the album (May 31st via Atlantic Records).

Check out the full tour dates, after the jump:

[new] Fleet Foxes – Battery Kinzie

By Will, March 21st 2011 — with 3 comments

Earlier today BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe played “Battery Kinzie”, a brand new Fleet Foxes track from upcoming album Helplessness Blues.

“Battery Kinzie” is a more upbeat song that sounds like something that would have happily fit on their debut album. Fleet Foxes have nearly perfected their folk rock aesthetic, and it shows on this track. If the rest of Helplessness Blues is this good, we will be glued to this album this spring.

One Thirty BPM has the radio rip. Stream it below:

Fleet Foxes – Battery Kinzie by One Thirty BPM

Helplessness Blues drops May 3rd via Sub Pop. But you can own it in less than a week if you got a lot of extra moolah laying around your apartment. The band is auctioning the vinyl test pressing of the album on Ebay. 100% of the prodededs from the auction will go to the GlobalGiving Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. So if you have the money, you can have this album very early. The bid is already above $500 and there’s still a week to go.
