Cults have uploaded a new song called “You Know What I Mean” for all to hear. It will show up on the bands self titled debut album which comes out May 30th via Columbia Records imprint, The Name Of.
“You Know What I Mean” has an early 50′s nostalgia feel to it. It’s poppy in all the right spaces, with precious girl group vocals taking you back in time. There’s a lot of unfair pressure on Cults to deliver thanks to the insane amount of hype from their early demos. I didn’t doubt that they’d come through, but I was a bit worried. “You Know What I Mean” erases any doubts that I have. Cults are the real fucking deal people.
It’s obvious that Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme has had a huge impact on the drugged out turn Arctic Monkeys had on Humbug. Naturally, most fans were curious if Homme worked with the band on LP4. We all hoped/assumed that he would contribute, and now we have concrete proof. According to Alex Turner himself, Josh Homme did contribute some backing vocals on the album.
Turner delivered the news in an interview with The Independent about Submarine. Some fans were worried that the band were just going to be adding Alex’s solo version of Submarine EP standout, “Piledriver Waltz” . Rest assured folks, Turner also told them that the version of “Piledriver Waltz” that’s on the album is a new full-band version of the song.
The entire interview is a must read for Arctic Monkeys fans. It gives you a lot of insight on what went on with the Submarine EP. Him and director Richard Ayoade also speak about the bands past music videos. Check it out.
Update: According to AMUS, Suck It And See is complete. Mixing and all. Get excited folks!
I got a pair of tickets for one lucky winner to see Richard Ashcroft (of The Verve) play on Jimmy Fallon’s Show tomorrow afternoon. You’d get to watch the show from the bands bench, and probably get a chance to see yourself on TV.
To win, leave a comment below with your favorite current album. I’ll choose a winner tonight. Good luck!
Here’s a taste of Richard’s solo stuff, in the form of “A Song For Lovers”:
Two of my favorite bands will be touring together this spring. Arctic Monkeys just announced that The Vaccines will open for them during their spring tour this upcoming spring. You all know how much I adore both of these bands, so this is a dream lineup for me.
I’m headed to the NYC show at Rumsey Playfield of course. I’m also venturing up to Toronto’s Kool Haus. Head here to see their full tour dates. Most tickets are sold out, but there’s always stubhub. Which shows are you guys hitting up? This is a can’t miss tour, for many reasons.
Emay’s new EP Incorruptible continue’s his incredible upward trend toward the top of the hip hop world. Emay continues to push his career forward with an incredible EP full of fresh ideas. Self produced with smart lyrics. Lets be honest: What’s not to like about Emay?
This new EP is 7 songs deep, full of thought provoking rap that’s as real as they come. There’s nothing fake about Emay. It’s just him and his thoughts. This is another strong EP that everyone can enjoy, even if rap isn’t traditionally your thing.
You need to check out EP track “Bars” below. Memoryhoue’s very own Evan Abeele played the piano for it, and Optimist Park put down guest vocals. Looks like I’m not the only one who’s adoring Emay’s work.
Melbourne, Australia act The Ovals have caught my attention with their excellent psych-rock jam “Refugees”. If you’re a fan of the heavy hitting dream psych that bands like Tame Impala revisited last year, then you will love The Ovals.
“Refugees” aims for the deepest parts of the atmosphere, and boy are they cruising. It’s a drugged out jam that features some of the dreamiest vocals that you will hear all year. Put them over some 70s influenced psych rock, and you got quite the song.
It’s taken from the bands new EP, Into The Eyes Of Those Who Sleep.
At SXSW Jack White played a two song acoustic set in a parking lot. It was to promote the Third Man Records Rolling Record Store (which is pretty neat). He played stellar performances of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away” and The White Stripes classic, “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground”. He also announced that Seasick Steve (remember him?) signed a 1 album deal with his label. Then Steve himself performed a few tunes. Awesome stuff.
Some artists hit with me instantly, others take some time to settle. Jamie Woon is the former. Immediately upon listening to his magical song “Lady Luck”, I was swayed. It was love at first listen. He has an incredible voice that flourishes with his dark sexy beats. You could call his music dubstep but you can also call it electronic. The best comparison that I can come up with is a mix of James Blake, Burial, and The XX. Jamie captures a sound that can be described as lonely quest for love during the night.
Buried beneath the electronic surface is an organic singer songwriter. Jamie truly is a singer songwriter type that also benefits from electronic sounds. He’s able to manipulate his voice to work side by side with the electronic beats, creating an entire world of sound. It’s a magical combination that shouldn’t be missed.
His debut album Mirrorwriting will be released April 11 via Candent Songs/Polydor. Stream “Lady Luck”, and “Night Air”, both of which will appear on Mirrorwriting. Jamie is offering his song “Blue Truth” as a free download. It’s not on the album, but it’s worth your time. That’s posted below as well.
Right now you can watch The Vaccines’ entire set for AOL Interface that they played at SXSW the other day. The bands live show is always great, and this is first hand proof of it. By now you either love these guys like me, or you don’t. If you don’t, then just move on. If you’re on my side, then enjoy this performance via Spinner:
I also found this great interview that HMV did with Justin & Arni from the band. It gives you a good idea where they’re coming from as a band.
Posted above is the album art for Tyler The Creator’s upcoming new album, Goblin. If you head here you can hear a clip of a new song from Tyler. As the clip plays out an image pops out saying “Fuck Nah Right and 2 Dope Boyz”. If you’re unaware of the story behind that, let me inform you. When Tyler was rising to fame, those two (very popular rap blogs) never posted his stuff. Now that Tyler’s hit the big time, he makes sure he reminds them that he did it without them.
He’s definitely not shy.
Tyler performed “Yonkers” and “Sandwitches” last night at the Woodies. Check out the performance below via One Thirty BPM:
