Comodo – To The Sun

By Will, March 13th 2011 — with 4 comments

UK producer Comodo is Oli Shilling from Nottingham, England sent me his track “To The Sun” and it’s all kinds of great. It’s painted with a brush of a trippy midday haze. If you like the minmal electronica/dubstep that James Blake makes, then you will love “To The Sun”. It’s a great listen that will relax your mind, body, and soul.

Check it out below:

You can hear more songs at his soundcloud. Oli says that the songs posted are mere demos at the moment. He’s working on an EP as we speak. Oli also runs a great music blog called Sucking Lemons. Check that out as well.

[new] Dylan Fox and The Wave – Tricks

By Will, March 12th 2011

Dylan Fox and The Wave are back with a new EP titled Tunnel Vision. You guys loved their last release, so I just know you’re going to love this. These guys should be local heroes in Oakland, Californa, because their music is pure rock and roll goodness.

I have their permission to share EP leadoff track “Tricks” with you guys. It’s more of the same garage rock goodness that the band seems to create so naturally. “Tricks” is hard hitting, effective, and full of everything that I love about garage rock.

Think if the White Striples, Black Lips, and Black Keys had a baby in a sweaty garage. You pretty much have the excellence that is Dylan Fox and The Wave.

Tunnel Vision will come out April 26th on itunes and will available for presale on the bands website later on (it’s still under construction). While you’re at it, check out a video with the band talking about their music:

[new] The Kills – DNA

By Will, March 11th 2011 — with 1 comment

The Kills are giving away new song “DNA” for free at their website. It’s taken from their new album Blood Pressures, which comes out April 5th via Domino Records. It’s a blues influenced rocker that has a dirty grind to it. Alison Mosshart has some of the sexiest female vocals around, and she puts them into good use on “DNA”. The chorus has a gothic appeal to it that is quite effective.

“DNA” will go well late at night when your buzz is in full effect. Give it a try:

Pre-Order Blood Pressures right here. If you haven’t heard first single “Satellite” yet, watch it’s music video below:

HP & Spin are following three of my favorite young bands on the road as they hit the road towards SXSW. The three bands that they’re following are Rural Alberta Advantage, Yellow Ostrich, and Young the Giant. Cameras will follow the band as they travel to SXSW, capturing every step on their journey. So far they’ve posted the Yellow Ostrich and Young The Giant videos.

I’ve had the pleasure to see both live, and they’re fantastic. They’ve both been on the rise this year, and I couldn’t be happier than HP/Spin is following their journey.

[new] TV On The Radio – Caffeinated Consciousness

By Will, March 10th 2011 — with 1 comment

We got another new song to listen to from TV On The Radio’s new album, Nine Types of Light. First the band gave us the slow burner “Will Do”. Now the band has given us a song called “Caffeinated Consciousness” where guitars come blazin’ at you. If you weren’t sure about “Will Do”, then this one will surely get the job done. This is pure TVOTR goodness.

The boys haven’t lost a step. I expect Nine Types of Light to be another fully realized album of great indie rock & roll.

Nine Types of Light drops on April 12th via Interscope Records.

Arctic Monkeys Announce New Album: Suck It And See

By Will, March 10th 2011 — with 2 comments

Arctic Monkeys have announced that their new record is titled Suck It And See. It feature 12 songs, and will be releaed Monday 6th June via Domino Records.

The album was produced by James Ford at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles. Suck It And See is certainly an interesting album title. Not too surprised with it, as the boys have never taken themselves too seriously. I noticed that one of Alex Turner’s Submarine EP solo songs, “Piledriver Waltz” (which I posted yesterday). It also features “Brick By Brick” the new song we heard last week.

There are some very interesting song titles on Suck It And See. Leads me to believe that this one will be even more American desert rock influenced than Humbug. I’m glad we only have to wait a few months to find out.

Check out the album’s tracklist below:

01. She’s Thunderstorms
02. Black Treacle
03. Brick by Brick
04. The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala
05. Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair
06. Library Pictures
07. All My Own Stunts
08. Reckless Serenade
09. Piledriver Waltz
10. Love is a Laserquest
11. Suck It and See
12. That’s Where You’re Wrong

[Listen] Alex Turner – Piledriver Waltz & Stuck On The Puzzle

By Will, March 9th 2011 — with 6 comments

I just live blogged my first listen to Alex Turner’s Submarine EP, and now I wanted to see what you thought of two of it’s standouts tracks, “Piledriver Waltz” & “Stuck On The Puzzle”

It begins with a clean acoustic guitar strumming side by side with a easy going bassline. Turner’s delivers his lyrics in a calm but focused delivery that is smooth and confident. Basically everything that makes Alex Turner a great songwriter shines through “Piledriver Waltz”.

“Stuck On The Puzzle” dazzles as well. It makes me feel like I don’t have a problem in the world. I feel liberated and carefree while listening to this. Now that’s good songwriting my friends.

I found links on youtuble that you can stream below:

The EP official drops March 15th. Be sure to buy it from Domino Records if you like what you hear.

Live Blogging The Leak Of Alex Turner’s Submarine EP

By Will, March 9th 2011 — with 8 comments

Alex Turner’s Submarine EP has hit the net, and I couldn’t be happier to finally hear what he has come up with on his own. I’ve already pre-ordered it on Vinyl from Domino, and I hope that you have done the same. I’m about to take my first listen, and I invite you to join my thoughts/first impressions on my first listen.

Here we go:

1. Stuck On The Puzzle (Intro) – A truly delightful little opening. Turner’s voice sounds gentler and soothing as ever. It’s less than a minute long, but it sets the tone just right. 8:13 p.m.

2. Hiding Tonight – If you liked songs like “The Bakery” from Arctic Monkeys, song like this are going to make you swoon. This would be a perfect song to slow dance to with your significant other, under the stars. After all, Submarine is all about young romance. The last 30 seconds are classic Turner in the making. Lovely stuff. 8:17 p.m.

3. Glass In The Park – Turner’s got the star gazing vocals down to pact her. Girls must be falling harder and harder for the guy. The light acoustic guitar strumming creates a dreamy glazey sound that’s truly easy on the ears. More great lyrics from Turner. He’s still got it. 8:20 p.m.

4. It’s Hard To Get Around The Wind – Vivid storytelling from the mind of Turner. There are some really pretty vocal parts from Turner. I love the part right after he mentions keeping pepper in the pill. This is perfect example of what makes Turner so special. He arranges great lyrics creating a solid vignette in your mind. If there had to be a song for a journey to heaven, this wouldn’t be a bad pick. 8:25

5. Stuck On The Puzzle – Wow the combination of the drums and the keys really add something. This one starts of magically and finishes beautifully. This may be the standout of the EP. It sounds like James Ford helped him out a bit on this one. Hate to sound like a puzzle, but the lyrics are once again the true champion. Turner has developed so much over the years. No one can deny that after listening to this. 8:29 p.m.

6. Piledriver Waltz – What a melody. This one probably sounds the closest to something that would be tagged with Arctic Monkeys name. Very catchy with a simple but effective bassline. Turner sounds confident and it’s effective. This one gives “Stuck On The Puzzle” a good run for it’s money. What a way to finish the EP. 8:32 p.m.

Anyone who worried that Turner lost his lyrical touch on “Brick By Brick” really needs to listen to this EP. He hasn’t lost a step folks. It was nice to hear him dive into the acoustic singer-songwriting form here. We’ve always known he could do it, but this is our first full fledged taste. This is an incredibly strong EP that will not only please Arctic Monkeys as well as many others. Not many people have heard Turner in this light, and I think people will gain a lot of respect for him after a listen to the Submarine EP.

I couldn’t be happier with the EP. Turner keeps proving to me that he is one of the best songwriters of our generation. You better believe it too.

[new] Battles – Ice Cream (Feat. Matias Aguayo)

By Will, March 9th 2011 — with 22 comments

It’s been a long wait, but we finally have a new song from Battles. It’s called “Ice Cream” and it features Matias Aguayo on guest vocals. Huw Stephens Zane Lowe played the song on Zane Lower’s BBC Radio 1 show earlier today. It’s a disjointed song that comes together in a fashion that only Battles could conjure up. There’s a lot of funky elements that show Battles development as a band, but at the core, it’s still very much Battles.

It will be included on new album Gloss Drop which is set for a June 6th release via Warp Records.

Listen to the radio rip from Zane’s radio show. It’s pretty great quality considering.
