Introducing: Leann Grimes

By Will, April 24th 2011 — with 1 comment

Not many sample/remix albums catch my attention. Sure it’s cool to see how artists are blended together to create something new, but often it leaves me wanting a lot more. I’ve started to give up on the whole remix idea, but Leann Grimes has me rethinking things.

Leann Grimes is 24 year old Shane Conerty from Asheville, North Carolina. After spending a cold winter in the Appalachian Mountains, he became inspired to show his appreciate for his musical discoveries on music blogs through music. He creates his own new music by putting his own signature touch on some of his favorite indie jams that he discovered on blogs. He says that “Leann Grimes is a record for anyone who checks music blogs religiously, waiting for albums to leak, and stays up till 4am scouring the internet for new bands, hoping to hear that ‘new’ sound.”

I’ve taken a real liking to the album because Shane takes a real honest approach for it. You can really tell he has an appreciation for the music. He doesn’t alter them too much, but he does enough where he gives it a new identity, while also claiming it his own. You’ll find him altering songs from The Morning Benders, The Strokes, Deerhunter, Yellow Ostrich, Local Natives and more.

I’ve been getting a little bored with music lately, looking for something to kick me in the ass. This album is a highly refreshing look at what I love about music rolled up into a wonderful music ball. I needed this. If you’re with some open minded people, throw this album at your next party/drinking session. This album showcases an enthusiastic tone that’s hard to argue with.

You can download the album for free right here. I’ve posted a few of my favorite cuts below, along with the tracklisting, so you can see what bands he samples.

Rona Pano – … You Stole The Laces From My Shoes

By Will, April 23rd 2011 — with 1 comment

Rona Pano are a duo from Leeds, England. They’re into bands such as Yuck, Wild Nothing, and Deerhunter.  I’m surprised that No Age wasn’t included in their list. Similar to No Age, Rona Pano a duo that makes fuzzed out feel good rock that has pop undertones hidden underneath layers of reverb. See what I mean with their almost effortless single, “… You Stole The Laces From My Shoes”.

They released their EP, Growing Young, earlier this year. Grab that for a couple of bucks right here.

The Bell – Today

By Will, April 22nd 2011

Here’s “Today” a incredibly catchy piece of pop from Sweden’s The Bell. It’s off of the band’s new album, Great Heat. It seems like Sweeden is constantly pumping out memorable pop act after memorable pop act. Add The Bell to that list.

Acrobatics – Give Away

By Will, April 22nd 2011

Acrobatics are a new electronic duo who flew under my radar. They released a 10 song LP in January that’s still available for free download. I plan on checking out the rest of the record solely based on the strength of the danceable opening track “Giveaway”, which you can check out below:

The Knife Are Working On A New Album

By Will, April 22nd 2011 — with 1 comment

The Knife are working on a new album that should be released in 2012. The news came from their website earlier today. That’s really all we have to work with, but it’s still exciting.

It would be the first new album from the mysterious Sweedish duo in nearly five years. We’re ready.

Bell X1 – Velcro

By Will, April 22nd 2011 — with 1 comment

I always have room in my musical heart for rock that has a flair for the dramatic. There’s nothing quite like an epic display of emotion. Bell X1′s “Velco” is a perfect example. The chorus is a beautiful display of emotion that juxtaposes the dancey new wave that the band experiments with. It all comes together quite nicely.

“Velcro” is taken from the Irish bands new album, Bloodless Coup. You can stream it below along with “Hey Anna Lena”, another song on the album.

Givers Announce Debut Album: In Light

By Will, April 22nd 2011

On June 7th Glassnote Records will release Givers debut album, In Light. The Lafayette, Louisiana band first caught my attention with the exciting songs featured on their Givers EP. One of the most impressive songs was “Up Up Up”, which will be the first single released on the LP. If the whole album is as strong as “Up Up Up” we could be looking at a really enjoyable indie album that is sure to shock all the people sleeping on this band.

Take a listen to “Up Up Up” below and get ready for, In Light:

[new] Seapony – Blue Star

By Will, April 22nd 2011

Seapony are up to plenty of good. They’ve been a must watch for me ever since I was graced with their amazing single, “Dreaming”. The Seattle three-piece are releasing their debut album, Go With Me, May 31st, via Hardly Art. Right now, I’m groovin the feel good summer vibes that album track “Blue Star” is giving me. Just like “Dreaming” (which they’re including on the LP) it’s an easy going track that does it’s job. It’s simple & to the point, and I’m perfectly fine with that.

If the rest of their LP makes me feel this good, I’m all for it.
