Seeing Alex Turner Perform An Acoustic Solo Session At 101.9 RXP

By Will, May 25th 2011 — with 6 comments

Whew. What a day. Where to start. Well thanks to my new friend Christian and the rest of my pals at Arctic Monkeys US, I was invited to see Alex Turner perform an acoustic solo session at NYC radio station RXP. It was mind-blowing and incredibly lucky to be invited to such an exclusive performance, and I can’t thank Christian, AMUS, and RXP’s increidbly cool DJ, Matt Pinfield enough. Alex played a short but sweet solo acoustic set of “Piledriver Waltz”, “Suck It And See” and “Love Is A Laserquest”. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that is the first time Alex has performed “Piledriver Waltz” live (for a session or at a show).

It was an absolutely incredible experience to be able to see Alex perform music in such an intimate setting, with only a dozen or so people in the room. During the interview with Alex, Matt Pinfield brought up how Alex joined Elvis Costello the other night to cover “Lipstick Vouge” (anyone have a video?). Alex spoke about how they’ve covered it before for fun, and the possibility of them recording it in the studio and making it a future b-side. How’s that for interesting?

The session should be up pretty soon. Keep an eye out here for that. I wasn’t allowed to shoot any part of the show, but I do have this little gem to show you. You guys probably have some idea of how big this is for me:

[watch] Bon Iver Cover Bonnie Raitt (Live On Fallon)

By Will, May 24th 2011 — with 2 comments

Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon stopped by Jimmy Fallon’s show and answered some questions in a short interview about the band. He also did a cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” & “Nick of Time.” with a melody of Leon Russell/Donny Hathaway’s “A Song For You”. The Raitt tunes are the b-sides of Bon Iver’s “Calgary” single.

The Rapture Announce New Album: In The Grace of Your Love

By Will, May 24th 2011 — with 2 comments

It’s only fitting that The Rapture announce their new album a few days after the world famous Harold Camping “rapture”. The band is calling the new LP, In The Grace of Your Love, and it will be released on September 5th via DFA. Philippe Zdar produced the record which was recorded in Brooklyn and Paris.

It’s been nearly five years since The Rapture released Pieces of the People We Love. Damn. I can’t wait to hear some new grooves. Check out a live video of lead off track “Sail Away” that they played last summer:

Here’s the new LP’s tracklist as well:

1. Sail Away
2. Miss You
3. Blue Bird
4. Come Back To Me
5. In the Grace of Your Love
6. Never Gonna Die Again
7. Roller Coaster
8. Children
9. Can You Find A Way?
10. How Deep Is Your Love?
11. It Takes Time To Be A Man

The Antlers @ Bowery Ballroom (May 20th, 2011)

By Will, May 21st 2011 — with 4 comments

The world is supposed to end later tomorrow afternoon. I hope that’s not true. If it is, I think seeing The Antlers is a proper way to close out my last night on earth. Their moody atmospheric blend of rock will surely set your emotions to a “sayonara” state of mind.

Tonight at Bowery Ballroom, The Antlers proved to all in attendance that their time is now. Their new album, Burst Apart, is hands down, one of the better albums of 2011 (so far) and all of the songs played from it delivered in epic fashion. Most of the set was dominated by Burst Apart, although there were plenty of timely flashbacks to the bands previous release: the amazing,Hospice. Lead singer Peter Silberman joked about the world ending also noting that “it seems like everyone is secretly scared”. Well if that was the case, no one in the audience had time to show it. We couldn’t be scared while witnessing their flawless display and execution of human emotion and soul. Peter’s falsetto was on point (as always) and if you weren’t moved by it, your emotions are way out of sync.

Not many bands can add depth and new excitement to their songs. Then again, The Antlers aren’t most bands. They take each song and burst through the seams pulling every heart string inside of you, until your begging for more.

Now that’s a live show.

[Little Scream opened and were great. A good blend of slow folk and mind bending psych rock. Check them out.]

Here’s a new music video that The Vaccines released for their debut album standout track, “All In White”. It’s fairly NSFW with some “boobage” so be forewarned if you’re on my site at work (weird, but cool concept to me).

Check it out:

The band have a limited 7″ of the “All In White” single available to pre-order. Go get yours right now!
