Gary Clark Jr.

By Will, June 22nd 2011 — with 1 comment

An email pointed me in the direction of this blues influenced guitar player named Gary Clark Jr. A few listens to his material had me do a double take to make sure I wasn’t actually listening to The Black Keys. Gary’s music is very similar not only because he makes soul inspired blues rock, but because his voice actually sounds a lot like Dan Auerbach. The other obvious comparison is Jimi Hendrix.

He’s releasing a new EP this summer called Bright Lights. Below you can take a listen to two tracks that should appear on the EP. If you’re a fan of The Black Keys, or bluesy guitar rock in general, Gary Clark Jr. is going to blow your mind. He’s certainly one to look out for in the near future.

[new] Male Bonding – Bones

By Will, June 22nd 2011

The new Male Bonding song, “Bones”, is a winner. They cleaned around the edges a bit by dusting off the lo-fi sound found on their debut LP. The result is “Bones”, a clean dreamy garage jam that passes the 6 minute mark. They make good use of every single second.

“Bones” will appear on new album, Endless Now, which drops August 30th via Sub Pop.

[new] Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Same Mistake

By Will, June 22nd 2011 — with 1 comment

Bonnaroo was the time of my life but damn it ruined me. I’m still playing catch up as you can see. While I was recovering, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah dropped a new song called “Same Mistake”, that will be on the bands new album, Hysterical, that they will self released on September 12th.

“Same Mistake” sounds like the CYHSY that I fell in love with. The band took some time off after album #2, and it seems like it did them some good. “Same Mistake” is a feel good track that sounds like it came naturally to the band. It glows warm with uplifting strings that only add to the tasty harmonies that rise to the surface.

If the rest of the album is this good, we’re looking at quite the comeback, folks.

[Listen] Elvis Costello – Lipstick Vouge (Feat. Alex Turner) (Live)

By Will, June 22nd 2011 — with 2 comments

Last month Arctic Monkeys were in town and rocked Central Park. The night before, Elvis Costello played a concert at Beacon Theater and had Alex Turner join him during his performance of “Lipstick Vouge”. At the time all we had to work with was a few tweets and photos, but now there is a video and mp3 that both Elvis Costello fans and Arctic Monkeys fans alike can drool over.

Reader Ben Berkowitz tipped us off to the mp3, so a big thank you to him. Take a listen below and re-live the glorious combination of two magnificent rock stars, one past, and one present, coming together to create an electrifying duo.

[new] The Morning Benders – I Wanna Be Your Man (Live)

By Will, June 21st 2011 — with 5 comments

The Morning Benders twitter stream has been full of wonderful updates about the recording of their new album. The band played a new song this weekend at the free concert, Make Music Pasadena. The song is called “I Wanna Be Your Man” and you can watch/listen below thanks to a video that a fan uploaded. It sounds very Paul Simon to me. As expected, the band is exploring new territories. I like it quite a lot. Take a listen:

The band also covered Prince’s “When You Were Mine”. You can watch that after the jump:

The Rapture – How Deep Is Your Love?

By Will, June 21st 2011

The Rapture are bringing back dance rock back with their new single, “How Deep Is Your Love?”. A few weeks ago DFA uploaded a video of an actual 7″ single of the song is played live for us to hear, disco ball and all.

It’s been such a long time since we’ve heard new music from The Rapture, and this song definitely doesn’t disappoint. The beginning of the song almost had me mistaking them for Hot Chip, a sign that The Rapture have taken a more rootsy approach to dance music, sounding more like a DFA band then ever before.

Grab your dancing shoes, and figure out how deep your love truly is.

The Rapture will release their new album, In The Grace of Your Love, on September 6th, via DFA.

Radiohead are performing a live session called From The Basement that is set to air on BBC on July 1st. The band have decided to tease us with a full video of them performing a new song during this session. The song is called “Staircase” and it’s just as dreamy and experimental as you’ve come to expect from Radiohead.

Scary how much the extra drummer, Clive Deamer, looks like Phil, isn’t it?

Watch “Staircase” below:

Last May Bon Iver performed a cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me / Nick Of Time” for Jimmy Fallon’s late show. Turns out that he recorded it as the official “Calgary” b-side. A stream has surfaced via Disco Naïveté, and you can take a listen to the heartbreaking song below:

Princess Chelsea – The Cigarette Duet

By Will, June 21st 2011

The song’s called “The Cigarette Duet” and it comes from a indie pop duo from New Zealand called Princess Chelsea. It’s taken off their recently released album, Lil’ Golden Book.

This one goes out to all you smokers out there. It’s oddly catchy and I dig the banter about smoking. It’s light and fun, and I can’t get it out of my head.

Check out the more than suitable music video below:

Lil’ Chief Records released their album. To buy some of their music, head here.
